Family holiday, my parents gifted to me and are now saying my brother doesn’t have to pay

FamilyHolidayTroubles · 30/08/2025 09:53

My adult brother and I are going on a trip with my parents. It was said from the start that we had to pay for ourselves, and every month I’ve been putting aside a certain amount to make sure that I had my share covered, and all of my spending money for the trip.

I recently passed some very important professional exams, so my parents said they’d pay for my share of the trip - essentially gifting me my saved money back.

They’ve now said though that it would be unfair if my brother had to pay. Turns out he told my mum the other week that he’s not saved any money and wouldn’t be able to afford to go. AIBU to think this is a bit unfair? We’ve had over a year to save, and if he didn’t bother surely that’s his problem, not mine?

The most enjoyable rubbish I've read in ages.

Takes me back to when my kids were little.

Actually I’m appalled, never seen such writhing envy of a sibling, and from an adult too. I can’t beleive the poor parents are going to take them on holiday when the ops like Kevin the teenager consumed by jealousy and wanting one up on her brother, I guess she thought they’d be going without him and now she’s gutted he’s coming too.

Delusional.

Your father loves your brother. You are just going to have to deal with it.

I never said he didn’t love him.

But I think there are aspects of my brother’s personality he very vocally dislikes.

Yes, I do. I get along a lot better with my dad than my brother does. We have a lot of shared interests and my dad gets very pissed off with my brother and his lack of work ethic.

Maybe your mother feels she has to compensate for blatant favouritism from your father towards his golden child?

This ‘holiday’ you’re all going on - it’s not to a family therapy centre, is it?

You "bought" euros?

Have you also packed your travellers cheques and Kodak?

“Blatant favouritism” but she’s the one putting pressure on me and letting my brother get away with murder? Meanwhile my dad and I get on because we support the same football team 😂😂😂

Yes - I paid £500 onto my post office travel card, in exchange for €513 euro. That’s how buying something works.

My kids put themselves through uni with student loans. Got jobs, paid for themselves to go travelling then came home moved out and got on with their lives. I've never given them a penny and we get on really well. Seems the best way to fall out of with your kids in OPs eyes is to have generous parents.

Imagine having the luxury of living in someone else's home and pay a small enough rent to be able to gain a qualification AND managing to save up £3000 in a year.

Most people have would only be able to achieve that with a lottery win! Then having the audacity to bitch about getting a free holiday on top! The sense of entitlement here is astounding

I’m sure there are aspects of your personality he dislikes too.

I can only imagine the conversations he and your mother are having about this!

Maybe they’re going on holiday to the 90s.

Truetoself · 30/08/2025 15:25

Why was this holiday so important that you have had two jobs whilst sitting important exams? It’s not like you don’t live with your parents and haddly see them?

and to see the solution to the current issue as telling your brother he can’t come ….. hmmm

carmak · 30/08/2025 15:26

That's the first time you've mentioned the murder. Report him to the police and he won't be going on any more holidays! 🤣

Seriously OP, you need to grow up...

Edited

There are aspects to her personality that most people on this thread find pretty off putting. And none of us have to live with her.

That's a really poor deal btw. You'd be better off getting cash or just using your credit card. Wasted about €50 there.

Ah the ultimate drip feed.... He's actually a MURDERER.... MURDERER I tell you 😂😂😂

SuperTrooper1111 · 30/08/2025 15:29

You sound about 12, OP - so petulant.

Bottom line is, your parents want to take both their children on holiday come what may. Rather than your brother not come at all, they're now shelling out for both of you, meaning you can keep your savings. They are treating you equally! Plus deep down you must've known this was on the cards, knowing what your brother was like. You should've addressed it when the agreement was made to start saving.

God knows what you're going to be like when you and your brother have to split your inheritance though! Do you even think he's deserving of an equal share to you?

Notagain75 · 30/08/2025 15:29

Perhaps your parents just want a nice holiday with their adult children and are happy to pay for it to make it happen.
How old are you both? because it sounds very much ac though you are still very much in the sibling rivalry zone.
Just keep out of it and leave your parents to spend their money however they want

This has future Netflix crime documentary stamped all over it.

Crazed adult daughter kills entire family in fit of jealous rage in Benidorm

LT1982 · 30/08/2025 15:32

YABU as it's literally none of your business what your parents choose to do with their money.

Sounds like both of you being treated by your parents removes your sense of superiority for passing exams which is very immature

It certainly filled a rainy afternoon…
I am off to a party tonight so will sadly miss the next twist which seems to be the father now hates brother too…
Perhaps op can get brother disinherited, kicked out of house and not invited on family holiday. I think in entitled sibling rivalry bingo that’d be the full house! Just make sure brother does not accidentally pack your dummy as he leaves.
