To tell my husband to stop saying this?

cittykat · 29/08/2025 07:48

my 9 year old son is a massive cat lover. He has cat slippers, tshirts, pens etc etc. I got him some cat pyjamas. These ones. https://amzn.to/45XnCwa

my husband (son’s dad) keeps telling him that he has to stop wearing them as they are girls’ pyjamas.

my son has said to him “please can you stop calling them girls’ pyjamas” and my husband says that he will be bullied if his friends see him wearing them. I have pointed out that the only one bullying him is his own father.

my husband says that telling him that they’re girls’ and not appropriate is not bullying it’s “parenting”

my husband thinks the shorts on the pyjamas are too short. Like little hot pants. Sometimes when son is lounging on the sofa they ride up and some bum cheek is visible. This angers husband and starts him off on his “girls’ pyjamas” conversation again.

son likes the pyjamas. I said I would ask on here what people thought. Please vote.

YANBU - your husband should stop calling them “girls’ pyjamas” to your son and back off

YABU - your son shouldn’t wear the pyjamas and your husband is right to protect him from future bullying if son’s friends saw the pyjamas on a sleepover.

Have you never seen a man in a kilt?

You are talking utter crap.

And other cultures have men in what are full length robes, Arab, African and many others. Peter O'Toole as Lawrence if Arabia looked pretty good in full Arabic clothing and Omar Shariff looked good as well.

IhadaStripeyDeckchair · 30/08/2025 09:18

Your husband is bullying your son

It's not parenting, it's despicable behaviour.
For that, and that alone, I would be saying stop all of this or I leave.
As parents our role is to protect, support, encourage and uplift our children, he is doing the opposite of that.

Sodastreamin · 30/08/2025 09:45

Sorry but I agree with your husband, hot pants? Really? I wouldn’t allow my daughter to wear pyjamas with shorts like that, never mind a son

It’s about the human figure - female figure can carry more types of clothes but male figure can’t. Best looking man in the world would still look pathetic wearing a dress but an
Average looking lady wearing a 3 piece suit would look cute /cool. These are facts that you can google 👍

We’re talking about a NINE year old child here. Last time I looked, boys and girls are pretty much straight up and down at this age.

I don’t need to Google ta very much. Perhaps you do … 👍

You’ve got a very odd idea of what constitutes a ‘hot pant’ 😂

Have you actually looked at the photograph? You clearly have no idea what hot pants are.

But 'Emma' knows the 'facts'! Google told her everything she wanted it to!

I think it's clear there are lots and lots of boys' pjs with cats on. For some reason, OP chose girls' pjs for her son and now complains that her husband doesn't like it.

Amazon product images are not always accurate! OP said they do ride up and expose his bum, her husband refers to them as 'hot pants'.

What exactly do you feel make them ‘girls pyjamas’? They are grey cat pyjamas.

I think lots of posters on here would have a fit if they saw the pyjamas I bought my son a few years ago - they were pastel coloured with ice creams all over them. I bought them because he loved those colours at the time. And my husband didn’t have a single issue with it because he’s not a dick. Contrary to popular opinion on here - my now 8 year old knows full well, sadly, that if he were to wear anything like that in front of his peers, they’d take the piss - so he doesn’t.

Her husband is being a twat. They are not hot pants.

Charlottejbt · 30/08/2025 11:09

The pyjamas are fine. DD2 has always loved monkeys and so sometimes wears boys' pyjamas. Nobody cares. YANBU

My DH wears nightshirts in bed, which might be termed dresses, I suppose, by OP's husband 😅. He doesn't like getting a cold back from the gap between pyjama tops and bottoms

Your husband is not being helpful but he is correct - you have clearly bought your son girls' pyjamas. Yes it is likely that he will get bullied in the event of friends seeing them (you can always have PJ's for sleepovers).

They are advertised as Girls Pyjamas. They look like girls Pyjamas. Maybe your husband is looking at his son and thinking "what's she got him wearing?" Even though we can wear what we want, maybe your husband is worried that his friends will see straightaway that they are girls Pyjamas... and they will! Just buy him a 'boys' cat t shirt and a separate pair of 'jama bottoms. It's easily rectified to keep everyone happy.

Everybody is happy... apart from a middle aged man.

And who are all these friends that are seeing this boy in his PJs?! He's not wearing them to school ffs

Ihateandilove · 30/08/2025 12:43

The description on your link does describe them as girls pyjamas

Flamingoknees · 30/08/2025 13:11

Well they are girls pj's - it clearly says so. It only matters, imho, if there is a risk if his oenis/scrotum being on show when sitting/moving around. Obviously girls don't have that issue, so short shorts are not so much if an issue.
I wouldn't stop him wearing these, if currently decent, just buy a different style next time.

childofthe607080s · 30/08/2025 13:21

They are girls because the marketing people like to box people up but since your son is wearing them and owns them they are clearly boys

SwingTheMonkey · 30/08/2025 13:25

I really thought attitudes like this were a thing of the past. They’re just. pyjamas. No wonder we’ve got so many confused kids thinking they need to change sex when people are so set in their ideas of what a boy or a girl should look like and wear. Girls pyjamas ffs. No, they’re just pyjamas.

Why does this matter? Why? I bought a microfibre towel to dry my hair. I bought it in the pet section of B&M. It said on the packaging that it was very absorbent, great for your pooch’s wet fur … or something. Does that mean I shouldn’t use it? Will I turn into a dog?

HarryVanderspeigle · 30/08/2025 14:40

I remember trying to find some when ds was 4 and wanted cat pj's. I went for girl ones in the end as they were all i could find. I find it odd, as roughly half of cats must be male. Plus they are vicious murderers, so should surely fit with the traditional boy clothes have predators and girl clothes have prey trope.

Hairshare · 30/08/2025 15:34

No such thing as Boys or Girls pajamas at that age.
