It’s still August for fucks sake.

Does ANYONE want to see Christmas shit in the supermarkets in the summer holidays?

Honestly? I see it and think ‘ooo the Christmas stuff is out - I love Christmas! But it’s too early for me to buy anything… then I carry on with my life 😂

I can’t get irritated by it! Is it because it makes you feel like summer is ending?

lifeonmars100 · 28/08/2025 23:37

What with global warming and endless consumer consumption, we seem to be living in a reverse Narnia where it is always Christmas and never winter

I won't hear a bad word said against Tesco. I bloody love that shop and would marry it if it existed in human form.

I’m guessing you’ve never been employed by them?

Yesidoactually · 28/08/2025 23:53

And another thing...I was in M&S today and they're still selling hot cross buns.

According to food hall they sell them year round because people buy them year round got to admit I like hot cross buns (they dont like me though)

Ratafia · 29/08/2025 00:31

What baffles me is when they sell perishable stuff that will be time-expired before Christmas, and that you can't freeze. Who on earth buys this stuff?

TerminalMoraine · 29/08/2025 00:41

By 2030 Christmas items will be in the shops in July.

DoinFineIThink · 29/08/2025 00:41

I absolutely love Christmas. It's still August though for goodness sake!

People that just want to eat it because they like it 🤷

JMSA · 29/08/2025 03:04

I mean, I love Christmas, but that is just absolutely taking the piss.

Dolphininawheelchair · 29/08/2025 03:28

What’s ridiculous about it is they were still struggling to flog the tins of quality street from last Christmas about a month ago! I think they seriously overestimate how much people can afford to spend on Christmas these days. And how shit a lot of the products have become.

LackOfSleepCBA · 28/08/2025 22:14

I think it's a great idea. It means that you can be organised for Christmas and spread the cost over 4/5 months. Buying some bits each month/payday and putting them away until Christmas, rather than paying out for it all in December. Having plenty of time to choose gifts for family and friends rather than rushing around in December in the dark and cold or doing it last minute.
Christmas stuff makes me feel happy and gives me warm smiley vibes. There's usually pretty decorations to look at, lovely gifts, tasty treats, good food etc.
I can't afford Christmas gifts, food, etc with just one month of pay, so it's wonderful to be able to spread the cost over several months.

Again, why can't you just put some money from August, September, Oct etc pay aside? It doesn't evaporate if you don't use it. I don't understand that argument at all.

The quality chocolate has dropped so much I’m not surprised they’re struggling to flog it.

A lot of ‘treats’ nowadays are more of a punishment than a pleasure.

Same. It's what my mums done for years because Christmas wasn't always in the shops in August thank fuck and I have also continued to do. It's a system that's not failed us so far.

No! I'm guessing you have, in which case I am sorry!

Nor am I a farmer being screwed over by price deals.

Just moving back to the UK from abroad, the supermarkets here are A-MA-ZING ⭐🤩⭐🤩⭐🤩⭐

I'm not sure if I said it on this thread or another that's running simultaneously, but some people can only buy what they can physically carry at a time.
It's all very well saving the money until December but carrying home £500 worth of food and gifts etc is impossible.
Some people shop every few days because that's the only way they can get their purchases home.

That's fair enough but it does then make one wonder how people managed 20 + years ago though.

Unless the gifts they are buying are specifically Christmas themed then how does that help? Other than food and crackers, a bit of wrapping paper what do people need to spread the cost of that is only available in Christmas aisles?

By shopping every few days.
People never used to bulk buy so much. They shopped when they needed too.

Well it depends what people are buying.
I mean a box of crackers (I assume you mean the hat/joke type) tend to be in big boxes and take up half the average pull along shopping trolley for a start.
A couple of tubs of Roses are also bulky and heavy.

In a way I think that's a better system. Shop when you need to and buy only what you need. Less food wastage and tat in landfill.

Maybe I'll bring in into law when I get round to running the world 🤣.

lifeonmars100 · 29/08/2025 14:05

I have always started my Christmas shopping early partly because it is so bloody expensive and partly because I find it much easier to just buy non-Christmassy things that I know people are going to like and enjoy rather than a get a load of overpriced tat with a Christmas theme. I buy stuff when I see an item that I think a friend or family member might like and put it away Get wrapping paper and such like in December and maybe buy one or two new bits for the tree. What I can't stand is they endless hype, the music on a loop that makes me want to scream (try to remember my headphones when I go shopping), it is one bloody day for heaven's sake with maybe a week or so in December leading up to the BIG DAY that we will be hearing about endlessly from about November onwards. Where is the magic for children who have a different sense of time, when you are little a week feels endless, having Christmas stuff around from now til December must feel like an eternity for them.

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 29/08/2025 16:02

Good lord @lifeonmars100 I think that we might be the same person!
