AIBU to ask about this whole ‘painting flags on roundabouts’ thing?

England flags have appeared all over my nice town, painted on to the mini roundabouts. What kind of a ‘thing’ is this? Is it a Reform thing, a football thing or a ‘proud to be English’ thing?
If it’s a reform thing, WIBU to go down and add “England welcomes you to our country” to all the red crosses?

I saw on Facebook one solution to the flags "problem": take them down yourself, sell them for a small sum on eBay, and laugh as the £££ come rolling in. There's massive demand for them right now. I might try doing this myself: there are plenty of flags to choose from.

Also for those who say "but the flag is patriotic!", many of the flags were probably made in China. 😆Thanks to Farage's idol Thatcher, nothing is "made in England" any more.

And yes @FatherFrosty , Reform cannot indeed do anything they have promised. It's always the problem when idealists and populists like Johnson and Farage promise miracles, and the moon on a stick: cold hard reality gets in the way. This is why I think it's a good thing we have a few Reform councillors in now: it's an opportunity for Reform to show their truly useless colours, and nail them to the mast good and proper.

I did start writing an email about it to the standards committee, but I don’t know if that’s the right department or not. Pushing that through would at least help, especially as we approach the next election

Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards.

Harmless enough and it makes a bit of a change from Palestine and pride flags.

Have you not seen the reels with the English flag being daubed all over restaurants and shops owned by “foreigners” . Accompanied by racial abuse and slurs to passers by. Harmless it is not.

There has been almost zero reaction to mentions of the incident in question on this thread or the other one that filled up earlier. Positive tumbleweed in fact, because to be frank, it's embarrassing for the "patriots" and completely undermines the idea that the people doing graffiti / hanging flags don't have racist motivations.

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 25/08/2025 21:37

I think many of the protesters do have a strong dislike of of recent entrants to the country. I’m sure part of that is the religion of those people and alongside that potentially the colour of their skin. Do I think they have an inherent dislike of all people whose heritage are non-British? I’m not sure. I would hedge my bets that Islamophobia is much more of the problem for them over anything else.

No I haven’t. I still think painting crosses on mini roundabouts and hanging up flags is harmless though. I am really enjoying all this exposing the hypocrisy of the type of people who shove Palestine and rainbow flags in our faces at every opportunity.

I think though it IS the mood of the nation. Everyone is talking about immigration. I have found no-one in favour. No-one. It is a super hot topic all round. Its not far right. Look at the voting intentions published frequently. Reform would sweep the floor in an election now.

Have you ever heard of echo chambers?

I have. Mumsnet is a terrible Labour one.

TinyIsMyNewt · 25/08/2025 22:55

Based on pre-election polls of voting intention, for the last few elections, mumsnet is slightly left leaning compared to the general population, which is very unsurprising given that women tend to vote more to the left than men do.

100% this. The left wing couldn't have their own way forever. 😎

The Worm Has Turned! The Wokery is at an end. The country is becoming right leaning.

And 'The Left' have only themselves to blame...

It's art therapy for angry blokes whose ex-wives "took the kids and turned them against us".

You know a lot about this. I don't. Can you please tell me what Operation Raise the Colours means? I don't understand.

Nagginthenag · 25/08/2025 23:07

'The country is becoming right leaning.'

Could you explain why this is a good thing?

ShesTheAlbatross · 25/08/2025 23:18

The country is becoming right leaning

What an odd thing to say after 14 years of Tory leadership, including a massive majority for Johnson.

If they didn’t do a good enough job, I don’t see how that’s the fault of the left.

Perfectly reasonable to criticise the current government, but anyone would think we’ve been under Labour for decades with this “at last the left arent getting their way” stuff.

I googled it for you and found this one.

Lots of excited people before they cut benefits and raised taxes, then added 20 billion onto the countries debt. Back tracked on the benefits and successfully closed down some private schools and took heating allowance off of pensioners and started to plan how to go after homeowners and people with pensions. Once that happened people didn’t seem so happy.

That post is dated 04/01/2024 and is hardly indicative of a MN Labour echo chamber. Thanks for the effort though.

That thread is from months before the election. And in your own post you acknowledge that people aren’t happy now they’re actually in power. I don’t think a thread from January 2024 really proves a MN Labour Party echo chamber.

I’ve been here 13 years and that life experience tells me that this place is a Labour echo chamber. Always was. Still is.

Funny how some people wave the St George’s flag as a badge of exclusion, when the man himself was anything but ‘native English.’ St George was born in Cappadocia (modern-day Turkey) and his mother was from Palestine. So the patron saint of England was literally a Middle Eastern immigrant. The irony paints itself.

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 26/08/2025 07:41

Im not sure they really care about the origins of the flag. More that the flag represents a land that they are trying to claim formal ownership over and so they will wave it and wear it.

I can remember Russel Brand in an interview saying that no one owns any land really. It’s just a tacit agreement between people that can fall apart at any time, You’ve only got to see what’s happening in Ukraine right now to see that.

Yes because decades of bigotry and genocide is nothing compared to the plight of the white British man

justnottinghill · 26/08/2025 07:52

I would love if all anti-immigration gammons would be refused treatment in the NHS by any immigrant workers - no chance of survival.
