Anyone actually excited about a Keir / Labour govt?

roarrfeckingroar · 04/01/2024 17:37

I'm typically a Tory voter (one nation Conservative, just right of centre, nothing radical) and gender critical, so I'm wary of a Labour government. I worry they'll leave the country worse than it is now.

However, I absolutely agree we need a change. Things can't get much worse, can they? Idiots like Boris and Truss have made a mockery of what I understand of the Conservatives - namely economic competence - and I can't vote for them this time. I don't know who I will vote for.

Listening to LBC this evening, I hear a Labour MP talk about how Starmer is offering an "exciting programme" of change and I just don't buy it. Maybe he will he better, maybe he won't, but my real question is is anyone genuinely excited about Labour, or just looking forward to the back of the Tories?

No, but I'll be voting for Labour because despite the fact that I don't agree with everything Starmer stands for we need to get away from a conservative government and Labour realistically are the only party that can do that. It helps that my MP is a Labour MP and is genuinely good so I would be voting for her anyway.

PermanentTemporary · 04/01/2024 17:40

Me. But I'm also expecting a tsunami of shit whipped up by the papers and feeding into the broadcast Newland social media. Because it would be ridiculous to expect everything to be shiny, there's too many major issues. So it's not going to feel good at all. But I'm still excited- I want the direction to change even if we stay at the bottom of the quarry for a long time.

Rainydaze79 · 04/01/2024 17:41

Definitely not. I would not vote Labour right now (or for the foreseeable future). They don't seem to have any credible plans and they hate women.

That said, I don't want another Conservative government. I feel genuinely stuck. My Labour voting friends are definitely not enthusiastic about the party in its current state.

I'm a centrist. I wasn't excited about the prospect for several reasons, then I heard Kier today, and now I actually am. Which is ridiculous but there we go. The trouble is if I vote for them I'm probably voting a close relative out of a job with the private school VAT so I'm really conflicted because I really like some of the other proposed improvements to the country like improving our healthcare service and improving care as a skilled profession (something Ireland have already done with good results). I also liked their ideas for green energy and think they're more concrete on that than the conservatives.

PSEnny · 04/01/2024 17:42

Me, yes partly because change is most definitely needed but public services will be better under labour. No old boys club to keep happy.

Zampa · 04/01/2024 17:42

I am, actually, although I know I'm an outlier. I think this Labour party stands for something very different from this Tory party.

Starmer has indicated some significant changes in education and Wes Streeting seems to want to change the NHS for the better.

I don't think that the less well off in society have a lot to be excited about at the moment. However, as the current Labour Party are less wed to the idea of Brexit, if closer ties to the EU can be re-established, we may see economic growth which could be spent to aid those who truly need it.

JennyForeigner · 04/01/2024 17:43

Yeah me. It's based on just fundamentally thinking KS is a good man. I'm excited to have goodness back.

Bicnod · 04/01/2024 17:43

I'm genuinely excited. This country desperately needs change. I like Starmer, I think he'll make an excellent PM. He behaves like an actual adult unlike the last few Tory PMs. I can't wait to see the back of the current shit show.

lavenderlou · 04/01/2024 17:45

Excited to have someone in charge who might be vaguely competent for a change.

Minewasthesame · 04/01/2024 17:45

I’m split. We need a change so we swing back to centre again (this is how it works, we swing right and left so we remain roughly centre but we’re too far right atm) but as the parent of a SN child who is being let down by the state school system, an extra 20% on school fees per child is terrifying. Also as a business owner/squeezed middle…

KnowsWhatAGiraffeIs · 04/01/2024 17:47

@JennyForeigner that was the strong impression I got as well. And I really want a decent human being to run things. I especially liked that he has an in-depth understanding of human rights law and seemed to have a good first-hand understanding of the balance in NI, both things central gov sorely need.

Elphame · 04/01/2024 17:47

No

Wales is crumbling under decades of Labour mismanagement. Our education service and NHS are in a far worse state than England's and the financial mismanagement is terrifying.

We are denied an inquiry into the handling of the Covid pandemic and laws are pushed through with only lip service being paid to "consultation".

All this will be coming soon to England

VisiblyNot25 · 04/01/2024 17:47

I am. Excited to have a sense that things might start working again, that there’ll be an end in sight to the endless confected culture wars, by their policies on green energy…

Ha - wouldn't count on that! Labour in Wales is committed to spending ever more of their budget on environmental policies

Same here, we're bankrupting ourselves to send DD to a small private school as she couldn't cope in mainstream and got zero help or support. If fees go up 20% we won't be able to keep here there. Any other spare cash we had has gone on therapy, as the state has failed her there too.

Newgirls · 04/01/2024 17:49

Yes!! We desperately need change - the country is depressed and divided. I will celebrate when we get a new government. Even the diehard tories I know have had enough. Starmer seems intelligent and calm - exactly what we need after these terrible years.

Yep I dread it, Wales type leadership

MintJulia · 04/01/2024 17:51

Like you, OP, I'm not a natural Labour voter but totally agree that we need a change as soon as possible.

But I just can't get excited about the thought of Keir in power. He's just so bland. I haven't heard him be fervent about anything yet. Nothing he says speaks of conviction or trustworthy decisiveness.

The whole TWAW thing doesn't help. I can't shake off the feeling that I'm betraying 150 years of women's rights campaigners. Without them, I wouldn't even have the vote, and Labour would certainly have never granted it willingly.

We certainly aren't spoiled for choice !! 🙁

Cosmosforbreakfast · 04/01/2024 17:51

Definitely not, the woman hating, trying to destroy women's rights and identities, endangering children, all makes them a terrifying prospect. It doesn't bear thinking how they would support and enable the SNP with their campaign against women here too.

I don't believe for a second any party will do anything other than look out for themselves and their cronies anyway so a change won't make the slightest bit of difference.

Missingmyusername · 04/01/2024 17:52

All the same - all out for themselves. But I’ll be very happy if Labour get in.
Tories are just grubby.

roarrfeckingroar · 04/01/2024 17:52

His "I'm working class" spiel annoyed me. It feels false and tired and just... can't we move away from class rhetoric?

Yes, delighted for change, but that guy no no no he’s a muppet, it will get even worse

How much of a say will Welsh Labour and their ministers have over England? Will they all have one unified set of policies? When I lived in NI we didn't really have other parties from GB with any particularly influential presence and then I lived abroad until recently so I have no idea how this works.

jasflowers · 04/01/2024 17:53

Definitely!

I'm excited about competent Government and raising standards in public life, turning around the NHS is a 10 or 15 project but without stable Government nothing at all can be started.

As OP said, Johnson and Truss have done immense harm to the UK, as has Johnsons Brexit deal.

jgw1 · 04/01/2024 17:54

I imagine that many of the people saying they will vote Labour in the polling are excited.
