To have been half naked in front of other children?

I had an encounter yesterday that has made me question myself and whether what I did was inappropriate.

I regularly swim at my local health club and often go during my lunchtimes. With summer holidays there are lots of children there which is, of course, absolutely fine.

The club has separate changing areas: a large open room to one side for families with children (with baby change etc), a large female only changing area that also has at the back a section for ‘adults only’..and then the same for men’s.

I got changed in my usual spot which is in the female changing rooms, but not in the ‘adult only’ section.

When I returned from swimming there were a couple of women also in this area wrangling their children. The kids were all boys but very young: I’d say eldest was 8ish so not old enough to go into the men’s rooms
alone.

I didn’t think much of it and started to get changed after a shower. I’d got my shorts on under my towel and was putting my bra on. I dropped the towel but then realised the straps had loosened so I took it off, adjusted the straps and put it back on again. I had my bra off for maybe 30 seconds whilst doing this.

As I was putting my top on, one of the women started shouting at me and accusing me of flashing her children. That if I was going to be naked I should move to the ‘adults only’ section. I didn’t really know how to respond and pointed out this was a changing room and equally, she could have gone to the family room. She said the room was too small for her and her friend together and I was completely inappropriate.

She then rushed the kids out and said she’d be speaking to the manager on her way out.

There was no one else in this part of the changing rooms but several women (in various states of undress) popped their heads around the corner to see what the fuss was about. I was mortified so just got dressed and packed up as fast as I could.

When I left, I mentioned what had happened to the receptionist who said that someone had made a complaint about inappropriateness with young children in the changing room! She said they had flagged it to the manager who would be in tomorrow (now today) who will review it.

Im due to go at lunchtime and can’t quite believe it.

Was it unreasonable to have been (momentarily) topless in front of young children?

Why is that so weird?
Why did you assume she was making a point?

That little chestnut.

Pharmacystop · 20/08/2025 18:29

I was once sat in my knickers, recovering from a hardworking when a small child said, very loudly, to his mother "is that a man or a lady?" 😆

Bunnycute23 · 20/08/2025 18:29

If you're half naked, which half is best?

This sounds like a very similar set up to my David Lloyd and your behaviour would be totally normal at my gym. Frankly total nudity is a regular occurrence, including by me, because the towels they supply are so tiny. I can see they have to have a method of reviewing complaints, as presumably some people could be "malicious" about this i.e. doing so in a manner aiming to be creepy, but I wouldn't expect anything to come of it.

We have this at our David Lloyd. Most of the women are fully naked walking around the changing room. The rule is that at age 8+ children of the opposite sex should use the family or their own sex changing rooms. I’d ask the Manager to check his age and tell miss Karen that she can’t use the women’s changing room when she has him with her if he’s of the age where seeing other naked women is deemed inappropriate!

It’s absolutely her problem if she doesn’t want her kids seeing other naked women. They have a family changing room so if she chooses not to use it, that’s on her. She can’t expect all other women to hide in one area because she’s decided she wants to take up a whole changing area so she can get changed with her friend - I assume he must have seen the friend getting changed.

TheGander · 20/08/2025 18:32

Sad for her that she thinks a woman’s upper torso is such cause for outrage. Ignore.

Bunnycute23 · 20/08/2025 18:33

OP's tit's must be spectacular. Or alarming. I don't think a casual nip slip deserves four paragraphs in a Jilly Cooper stylee otherwise.

No... I was quoting someone else within the same post.

It's allowed 👍

Then tag them.

Since when did the world get so prudish? I understand men/boys together, women/girls together, but when I was little, depending if it was mum or dad who took us swimming, I mean, we saw willies, fannies and boobs a-plenty, and everyone came out alive and unharmed! 🤔

Maybe go somewhere else?

How on earth is getting changed in the female changing rooms of a swimming pool 'actively trying to be an exhibitionist'? OP changed under a towel, but then struggled to adjust her bra straps while holding the towel up.

The complaining mum refused to use the family section of the changing room as there wasn't enough room for her and her friend. There are no cubicles in David Lloyd clubs.

If an 8 year old boy has awareness of female bodies, he should be changing in the male changing rooms.

Exactly this. There is absolutely no way I can get changed without exposing a part of me, I'm not faffing about getting changed under a towel so no I'll just start with knickers which means I'm sat there with my boobs on show because how else do you do it?!

BrieEncounter · 20/08/2025 10:42

Wow, really? You’ve never seen a boob or bottom in a gym changing room?

Maybe it’s just the places I go but nakedness is pretty common in most changing rooms I’ve been to.

I did draw the line once when I saw a lady changing a tampon, but that’s another thread.

Equally, I would say if she was concerned, she could have gone to the family only area and separated from her friend

Literally another thread

YWNBU changing rooms are for getting changed in, if the woman didn't want to risk her son seeing someone naked then she shouldn't have taken him in, and even then pointing it out and making a fuss about it just would have made her son notice you more.

She wouldn't cope in changing rooms in Finland - everyone is stark naked as you have to shower naked, then we sit naked in the sauna and talk to strangers (and some not so strangers - once saw one of DS's nursery teachers in the changing room and had a chat, while naked)

MyDeftDuck · 20/08/2025 18:37

And what would this mother do when she takes her kids to a beach or hotel pool on holiday and someone is sunbathing topless???? Make a twat of herself all over again! She mentioned it to the poo staff, they are obliged to record her comments and follow up but chances are they’ll shrug it off, hopefully. And it’s not as though you flashed your bum is it?

CanIgetARosePinkFrappucino · 20/08/2025 18:38

8 year old boy is old these days, it's the mother problem, not yours. They teach them sex ed from 9 these days.

Then it's the women bringing male kids.

I remember in another country doing public baths where one is completely naked. One woman brought 10 year old boys who systed the whole time

It was weird.

I have used that changing room many dozens of times since and have never seen anyone just standing about starkers, let alone for several minutes while chatting to someone else.

Even if they’re talking to someone else at the same time, people just get changed in a reasonably quick and businesslike fashion.

anyone except her, obviously.
Here's a shocker for you: not everyone behaves the same.

In the ‘adult only’ section at the back of the open plan changing rooms. Lockers sort of obscure it from the rest of the area.

That’s so you can get away from kids if YOU wish to. She’s a twat and should be pleased you didn’t flash yours 😆

Underthinker · 20/08/2025 18:46

Account734 · 20/08/2025 15:22

I was just wondering if you are in the US because my experience in London is that they are still standard but that's probably because space is tight here. I would by far prefer the privacy of a cubical.

In my experience newer build or refurbished council run gyms and pools very often have the cubicles set up, while I think every single private, chain or hotel gym I've been to (probably well over 30) have had communal changing rooms.

Skodacool · 20/08/2025 18:48

So the woman complaining got caught out for having a 9 year old boy in the female changing area - karma! Perhaps another time she’ll not be such a CF.

MC846 · 20/08/2025 18:48

I and my 6 year old son got naked and changed in a hotel pool changing room yesterday alongside 3 women there alone without children who also got naked while changing and no-one at all thought it was odd. People are naked in communal changing rooms, we separate from sex from around the age of 8. Don't give it a second thought, this woman was the one being weird!

ThriveAT · 20/08/2025 18:49

Has she never been to an Ibiza beach? It's ridiculous OP. Ignore.

ThisCyanPoet · 20/08/2025 18:50

BrieEncounter · 20/08/2025 11:27

Just to be clear, I have no problem at all with the 8 year old (and Im only guessing but he was max 8) being there. Almost daily when I get changed there have been kids of various ages running around or being hurried up by their mums over the holidays. But I think most expect that other women will carry on as usual around them.

There were a total of 5 kids with these women. The youngest looked about 3 and I think they’d just done a swim class of some kind or some activity.

So I don’t mind the kids being there at all. And I was more modest that I usually am as I usually don’t bother covering myself fully with a towel once I’m dry but I do this when I see kids around so try and be a little more discreet.

But my locker was in that section so I just didn’t think to move.

Im off there in an hour so will ask to speak to the manager and see what his view is. I don’t intend to complain about her and I hope he sort of rolls his eyes alongside me!

I would complain about her, because if she’s isnt told to STFU/use the family changing room she’ll keep kicking off at people.

Some clubs if you’re lucky have a cubicle or two, but open changing is what they provide and they can’t be letting her kick off like that at people. If her son was eight or over, she definitely shouldn’t have been there.
