How long is acceptable to wait in the salon for your appointment?

Just that really. Currently at the salon and my stylist is running at least half an hour behind, I’ve been waiting for 25 minutes as it stands. She knows I’m here and told me to take a seat, but I’m just wondering how long you’d wait before saying something?!

How bizarre. I never knew that some stylists were so entitled that they have an expectation of a generous tip and would gossip about you when the doors are closed. They sound immature as well as entitled.
Can you let us know which area you are in so that it can be avoided?

Oh ….where do you live…sounds like a small gossipy village?

Sorry my reply was to a different poster

I'm from the UK, had 3 children go through school and never once known anyone to tip the teachers, but all cultures are different.

You don’t do end of school year gifts for teachers?! Very common in the UK.
Class teacher in Primary.
Form teacher at Secondary.

I always tip my lovely hairdresser. He goes to a lot of trouble. I was a bit early for my appt. the other day (at the end of what was probably his lunch break) but he started straightaway anyway.

Hes just doing his job 🤷‍♀️

LindorDoubleChoc · 16/08/2025 13:18

I once waited half an hour and then left the salon after complaining loudly. It was when my DD was a baby and I was paying for childcare at the time.

The owner of the salon phoned me later to apologise and offered me a free hair cut.

MKDex · 16/08/2025 13:20

Women already get absolutely shafted in terms of hair prices.

I bet men pay half as much at the barbers and dont tip

catsareace · 16/08/2025 13:20

Swiftie1878 · 16/08/2025 11:32

Slightly different then.
Mine is exceptional, in high demand, but doesn’t own the salon. Wouldn’t dream of not tipping.

Good for you. I don’t feel the need to tip for a service I’m already paying for but you do you.

Nobody tips. We’re in England, not American!

Yes of course we tip in the UK. The reality is that you get a better service when you tip. As soon as we get to a hotel, my DH will tip the bell boy handsomely so that we are looked after we'll for the duration of our stay.

Of course everyone should get the same service, but in reality financial incentives work.

Yes, but he does it better than anybody else I’ve used for ages. On the previous occasion, I forgot to specify him when booking online, and a female stylist did it. It was OK, but I certainly didn’t get the wow effect. He takes longer and just ‘bothers’ more.
I’m afraid to say that the best hairdressers I’ve ever had have been male.

My Dad always tipped the barber.

Tip the bellboy handsomely? Do you holiday in the 1950s? 😅

You don’t tip a stylist you love?

That may be why they don’t mind making you wait.

Typical mumsnet privelidge comment.....
I don't tip my hair dresser, and shock horror I don't even tip restaurant staff unless they have been particularly great, and even then it will be max a fiver.

We aren't all made of money!

My husband pays about a tenth of what I pay to have his hair cut. He always tips too.

ThinWomansBrain · 16/08/2025 13:24

I'm rarely kept waiting - but last visit I was, by 15 minutes.
Appointments are booked & charged by time (eg 15/30/45 minutes), so I just said I'd still need to leave at 11.30 or whenever, so to make it a 30 minute appointment (very pointedly, in front of the previous customer who'd kept chattering about her next haircut for ever and a day through my appointment).
Hairdresser, probably sensing I was pissed off, said he wouldn't chat so much; finished a full cut in about 25 minutes instead of 45 - result!

So support a salon that has gender neutral pricing?

Confusdworriedmum · 16/08/2025 13:27

Tollington · 16/08/2025 13:00

Why would you tip somebody for doing what they are paid to do?

I don’t tip the bin men, postman or the checkout workers at Tesco

My dad always used to give money to the bin men, postman, paper boy and milkman but only at Christmas. Hasn't done it for a long time though and they probably aren't allowed to accept cash gifts anyway.
People generally tip if the person has a badly paid job and it's allowed. Do you not tip in restaurants either? Especially if you've had good service?

Tartantotty · 16/08/2025 13:28

Whether you tip or not should make no difference to waiting time. 30 mins is too much. I'd just go, say you have a busy day and will be out of schedule due to the wait.

Enko · 16/08/2025 13:28

I dont tip hairdressers I never have I pay a lot to get the cut and I use a senior stylist. I spend about £200.00 each visit so I see no need to tip.

Mine call if they are running more than 15 mins late and let you know. The only time I was left to wait 30 mins they gave me some free full sized products after as an apology.

unconditionalpurelove · 16/08/2025 13:29

I changed salons for this reason. Nothing wrong with the hairdressing at all but waiting half n hour after my appointment time on a Saturday on top of over 3 hours colour and cut is just too long for me and I'm not prepared to do it.
I went back to my previous salon who always manages to cut and colour my hair 3 hours tops and would only be left waiting 5 -10 mins tops.

linelgreen · 16/08/2025 13:31

I always make sure I book the first appointment of the day that way they cannot be running late!

I didn't ask for your advice

chiefscoutsgoldaward · 16/08/2025 13:32

My last colour and cut was £243. There is no way on earth I am tipping on top of that.

I

Lordfarqouh · 16/08/2025 13:32

I was recently in the salon for a blow-dry. Had my hair washed and was then sat for at least 25 minutes waiting to be dried. I was fuming and felt like walking out with wet hair. But my stylist is amazing. On this occasion she was away and I had someone else. I usually tip. I didn't on this occasion. It's the only place in the UK I would ever tip.

Coconutter24 · 16/08/2025 13:33

ThatCyanSheep · 16/08/2025 11:38

She’s explained now it was because of another stylist being off sick and a client needing an appointment before her holiday - otherwise I was blocked in for the whole day. Guess it’s not because I’m a mean bastard after all!

And she didn’t have the decency to call you beforehand or let you know once you arrived she’d be an hour?
