To think this is not abscene…but fairly normal?!

I have moved house and I finally have a walk in wardrobe. I’ve decided to hang everything except trousers. Friend said this was an obscene amount of clothing and laughed so much. I think it’s not that crazy 😅 what do you think obscene or normal? 🤣 this is just the top section, next section over is dresses and coats etc.

I have 4 double wardrobes, 8 large wooden chest drawers, a 3x3 ikea cube for shoes and a 5 drawer unit for underwear/tights etc.
Oh... and about 10 large storage bags under the bed for seasonal clothes and bags etc

What you have is definately not obscene!!!

I have a lot but I love clothes and making outfits, and have had a lot of the items since teen years!

oohyoudevilyou · 10/08/2025 23:08

Its a lot of clothes...do they all fit you? I have about 40 tops but about 10 of them I never wear as they don't fit, arent comfortable or I just cant seem to incorporate them into a wearable outfit! Am impressed and quite envious if the OP actually wears them all.

KawasakiBabe · 10/08/2025 23:10

Gosh, I have loads more than you. If I ever move I will have a really good sort out, too lazy to do it without that motivation!

Deadringer · 10/08/2025 23:21

That's a lot of tops, a lot of them look very similar though.

I dont see how she can though.

I mean whatever, if that is what the op wants to spend her money and time doing, it's up to her but is somewhat dillusional if she doesnt think it is excessive and wasteful.

OP, do the thing when you put all your coat hangers on the wrong way round. Wear your clothes as normal but as you wear them, turn the coat hanger the right way round. After 2 months (Im guessing that is how long it would take you to wear all those tops), see how many you havent worn. Might be a fun thing for you.

I'm shocked at how many people think this is normal. I guess I am at the other extreme though, I only have half a wardrobe of clothes!

I’m shocked at how many people think this is a lot of clothes. I don’t think it looks much at all. I’m looking at my wardrobe (four of what the OP has) and my three chests of drawers and then thinking of the boxes under the bed and the few drawers I’ve taken in my sons room.

But I’ve always thought I was quite frugal when it comes to shopping. I don’t think I have loads of clothes at all. Not until reading these comments.

I take stuff to the charity shop all the time.

thinkfast · 10/08/2025 23:41

I’m very jealous of the walk in wardrobe and the neatness. It’s definitely not an obscene amount, although there’s a lot of repetition. It looks a small fraction of the number of items that I have.

ThatBlackCat · 10/08/2025 23:42

I'd say that's about average to a bit less than average. Don't know wtf your friend is on about. Maybe she only has 5 tshirts to her name.

ThatBlackCat · 10/08/2025 23:44

I will say that the neatness is a little jarring. Something about it looks abnormal. Not even a shirt corner out of place. It feels a bit uncomfortable to look at.

DelphiniumBlue · 10/08/2025 23:44

It’s pretty similar to my wardrobe- I see you hang your plain t shirts rather than putting them in a drawer.

ItsameLuigi · 11/08/2025 00:02

Kitchenbattle · 10/08/2025 19:49

Can I be a ninja? 🤣 yes I wear them A LOT!

They forgot the secret third option of people who wear black daily: emos and goths 🤣. I am very much emo still and 90% of my clothes are black, the only white t shirt I have is a Taylor swift one

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 11/08/2025 00:04

It's beautifully organised but I have that in coats and jackets alone so your friend better not ever see my wardrobe!

Why on earth would a neat wardrobe look uncomfortable?

Doitrightnow · 11/08/2025 00:06

It's obscene in terms of the amount of clothing a person truly needs and associated environmental cost. But I think it's normal for the UK and if I hung up all my tops I suspect I'd have more than you. And that's after spending ages trying to declutter!

Isometimeswonder · 11/08/2025 00:12

I have 5 times this. Plus boots, trainers, sandals.
Coats... so many coats

I don't know. It just....does. It looks too perfect. All very professionally pressed and lined up just perfectly. Not like wardrobe that's 'lived in' if that makes sense. It looks like a professional display or something. Fair play to the OP though, I could never get mine that neat. Maybe that's my problem, jealousy. Lol.

NoSoapJustUseShowerGel · 11/08/2025 00:23

It’s not an OBscene amount of clothes but it’s too many of the same/almost the same item. Who needs 10 navy and white stripe tops, 8 short sleeve white T-shirts etc etc. that’s crazy.

minipie · 11/08/2025 01:07

Seems fine to me, I’m assuming you’ve built this up over a lot of years and it probably includes some stuff you hardly wear (as it’s for particular occasions/purposes)

However there is no way I’d manage to keep up with the hanging every item malarky! I’d have a look for some drawers you can retrofit.

JMSA · 11/08/2025 01:14

Normal. And very tidy!

Ruthietuthie · 11/08/2025 02:53

It would be too much for me.
I really don't like the feeling of having so many clothes. I set 5 as the maximum number of any item I can keep - so no more than 5 summer dresses, no more than 5 smart work blouses, 5 work sweaters. I find that, when choosing something to wear, I am never going to choose to wear the "number six" blouse, when there are five available that I like much more.
Five is an arbitrary number but it works for me. And in many categories I have far less. I only have two pairs of jeans, for example, and only two smart work trousers. The limited number (and the question - if I had to pick between all these items, say, all these t-shirts, which ones would I pick first? ) also stops me from overshopping - I have a red cotton summer dress I love, and am tempted to buy other red cotton summer dresses, but tell myself no as I already have one.
I feel much lighter with less.
If you have seven or more near identical objects, are you really going to select number seven in your ranked preference, if any of 1-6 are clean?

RoseAlone · 11/08/2025 03:30

That's uneccessary. No one needs that amount of clothes. Donate at least two thirds to charity and don't be so self indulgent

Willquery123 · 10/08/2025 19:12

Looks great. Wish my wardrobes were as organised!

Organised!!

OP it is making my teeth itch. Please sort it either by colour or sleeve length.

sammylady37 · 11/08/2025 05:42

The sanctimony on this thread is hilarious, if not unexpected on mumsnet. It’s far from obscene op. Enjoy your lobby organised wardrobe and your clothes.

That’s my year round wardrobe, I wear them all.
@ThatBlackCat I’ve literally just moved in and am sorting it, so it’s very much not lived in that much. In saying that I’m a very organised, neat freak, I don’t let my house get messy…my DP is the same so the house is always spotless and neat.
@oohyoudevilyou yes they all fit me.
