Messaged "celeb" crush and now feel like an idiot

A bit lighthearted. He is a member of a semi- famous indie band. I just replied to his IG story asking about his pet. Nothing at all flirty. I'd had a couple of glasses of wine when I did that. He didn't reply and now I feel like an absolute tit! AIBU to feel like this? He probably gets loads of messages from fans and doesn't really read them so I'm probably BU!

🤣🤣🤣

During Euro '96, I think. my daughter wrote to a member of the German team to wish him luck! After the tournament she received a huge envelope full of memorabilia and signed stuff from him and the team.

I emailed a former England football manager (initials GS) via the FA last year to thank him for his work as manager. Not sure why I don’t fancy writing his full name, as he’s very well known - but I’ve gone all shy 😂 I don’t fancy him but just really respect and admire him. I never got a reply, and I doubt he even saw it, but I’m glad I did it.

Also emailed Adrien Brody’s agent earlier this year to congratulate him on his Oscar win. Again, just felt like it and never got a reply but glad I did it.

A semi-famous person who has a very very famous parent "liked" quite a few of my tweets (in the pre Musk days) and replied to a some of them in a polite and humorous way. They moved to Bluesky and so did I (not because they did but due to Musk making Twitter such a hell pit) aind they actually re-posted one of my comments. I was rather thrilled!

There were some really great fandoms on Twitter before Musk ruined it.

Oh my god I love this - especially as a fellow Spurs fan 😍 So lovely that you thought to wish him well and that you both had a chat. Do you mind me asking who it was? Please be as cryptic as you wish! I’m not sure I’ll know who it was, but my Dad - long-suffering Spurs fan from before the 70s - might!

Just saw you said it was. Sorry for being slow!

JustSawJohnny · 07/08/2025 20:29

I very much doubt he handles his own SM.

Forget about it.

Firefly1987 · 07/08/2025 20:30

Aww maybe he will still reply yet! Keeping fingers crossed for you x

Iocainepowder · 07/08/2025 20:34

Don’t worry about it at all op. As long as you don’t act like a nutjob stalker then you are fine. I once tweeted a celeb, sent a gift on behalf of other fans and they ended up inviting me onto the set at a taping of their show.

When I was 19 after Italia 90 World Cup I had a crush on Gary Lineker (& Stuart Pierce too to be fair).

Driving back from Heathrow airport we drew up into a petrol station forecourt around Hammersmith. To my astonishment, Gary Linker got out of the car in front (he was with another guy). Me and my friend screamed “It’s Gary!!!” with the window open. So he came over to talk to us.

I’d like to tell you he was a complete gentlemen given he was married to Michelle, but he invited us back to his hotel room. Obviously we didn’t go.

So sometimes it’s better to be ignored by your crush - to preserve the illusion.

I had the BIGGEST crush on Stuart Pearce when I was about 13!! Absolutely idolised him! You are the ONLY other person i have ever heard say you had a crush on him too! 🤣

Yeah, people I’m pretty certain won’t ever see them though. Like Charli Xcx gets vegan recipes, Idles get crochet patterns, Sam Fender gets vegetarian recipes. I find it easier to find what I was looking for than the save post function.

Confused
soupyspoon · 07/08/2025 20:36

You're 35 I take it?

Still young enough to think you're a teenager, enjoy it, have wine and send people messages!!!

This is quite the most insane thing I’ve ever read on Mumsnet. And Mumsnet already reset the bar for insanity.

I've seen Gary Lineker around loads of times, in SW London. He's really gorgeous and dresses so well.

I did this when I was 15. Quite a niche/not well known actor, and my first 'love'. I messaged his forum thing he had and got a kind message back from his agent or whatever. I die even now, aged 37, thinking about the cringey, emo, angsty things I wrote, and I wish I didn't remember.

To make things worse, I then got an e-card from his very own email address that said 'Thinking of you' on it, and for about ten blissful minutes thought I'd made a real impression ... until I emailed back and discovered he had already anticipated this, and blocked me.

No doubt I then tried adding him to my MSN, but clearly wasn't successful, as I never spoke to him again, except in my dreams. I can't even embarrass myself further by saying who it was as I'm too worried he will Google himself, find this and somehow remember me. 😱

Scarlettpixie · 07/08/2025 20:43

Messaging is fine and what I presume celebs want when they post stuff. I posted happy birthday to someone famous this week which I don’t really do as a rule but I never expected a response!

So not being unreasonable or daft to post but you are a bit unreasonable for expecting a reply (and feeling silly for not getting one).

PerfectTuesday · 07/08/2025 20:43

I wrote to mine (pre-internet) via his agent, who I had to look up in the town reference library. Several weeks later I got a signed photo back from him!

Mirabai · 07/08/2025 20:44

Notascouser1990 · 07/08/2025 19:55

@Mirabai oh my god! Poor Michelle! I always thought he was a bit of a sleezeball. Gave off such a nice guy vibe on MOTD but it didn't buy it. He might have changed now that he's older but you know what some celebs are like. Good for you for not going!

Edited

You talk as if there was any dilemma 😆

namechangeGOT · 07/08/2025 20:44

I wrote a letter to the queen years ago when I was little because some foxes were culled due to them eating some swans! Mi mam must have said that all swans belong to the queen and so I wrote her a strongly worded letter telling her to leave foxes alone in the future or else. Months later I received a fancy letter back, wax seal and everything, telling me they’d passed my very serious concerns on to the queen! 🤣

I had a crush on a spurs player in the 70's. Heard he was in an orthopedic hospital with leg injury so truanted from school and rang hospital from phone box and got put through!! I was mortified and we had a silly chat, I wished him well and he let me down v gently 😔. I wouldn't give it another thought, he's only a human being not a god and will probably be a bit chuffed x

Lol this is adorable

saltandvinegarchipsticks · 07/08/2025 20:47

I once drunkenly offered Russell Crowe some smelly cheese on Twitter and he very politely replied to thank me but decline.

I'm not sure why I did this

Eric1964 · 07/08/2025 20:48

@Notascouser1990 Don't worry about it! Steve Diggle of Buzzcocks blocked me, after following me (though he did later unblock me, and now we're friends on facebook.) I can't know why, but I suspect it was because I suggested Buzzcocks should get a female singer after Pete Shelley died. (I met Pete Shelley (and Steve) - did I ever tell you that story? He bought me a G&T.)

A very well-known classical musician told me to 'piss off'. That one was weird. I would reply, retweet or like his tweets on twitter when it was twitter, then he'd PM me, and we'd have a very civilised chat. He always initiated these conversations. This went on, very occasionally, for maybe a couple of years. Then one day, as I'd done several times, I replied to a tweet, and he sent me several PMs saying I'd pissed him off, he'd been sick of me for quite a while and he didn't want to interact any more. I said, no problem bro, didn't mean to bother you, wished him all the best for the future, and unfollowed him.

The perils of parasocial relationships! And I'm a 58-year old man.

I don't think any celeb would reply to a message from a random person on their Instagram story. ConfusedHe probably doesn't even run his own account.

Exactly. My local hairdresser outsources all socials, so very unlikely any celeb will be doing their own (unless it suits them).

I DID THIS TOO!!!!

I went a bit further and would phone his agent fairly frequently and ask where he would next be appearing. I also sent a birthday card, in which I invited him out for a curry.

Um, there's more. I waited at the stage door a couple of times and got his autograph. One of the times I was pretty drunk and thought about following him.

Don't worry, he's dead now (it wasn't me).

Ineedanewsofa · 07/08/2025 20:50

Love some of these! Early days of twitter I tweeted the lead singer of my fave band asking about something quite specific on an album track and he sent me a really lovely set of replies. Made my day and still makes me smile now 😊
