DH being cruel to small fish

linaplatelover · 18/07/2025 16:37

DH is part of a team sport - has been for years no issues usually with it.

he has brought home a small ‘goldfish’ in a tiny tank. This small fish has been passed around different team members. Apparently if it dies on your watch you have to pay a fine.

the fish clearly isn’t being cared for properly, the water is cloudy it has no filter or air stone.

Ive looked up the type of fish and it’s not even a goldfish - it’s a small orange tropical fish that requires a heater.

I'm absolutely furious! I hate any cruelty to animals and think this type of lads game from a 40 yr old man is ridiculous.

first off mumsnetters AIBU? And if you think no what should I do?

worst part is that DH agrees that it’s cruel but for some reason ‘doesn’t want to cause a fuss’

OP posts:
ClassicalQueen · 18/07/2025 20:29

That’s awful. Tell them the fish died and rehome it or keep it in good conditions.

Rememberwhatthedoorknobsaid · 18/07/2025 20:48

People who intentionally cause suffering to a helpless animal deserve the same thing to happen to them

Another thread where there’s loads of posts and the OP hasn’t been back.

I don’t bother responding in good faith to these types any more.

It’s only been a couple of hours.

JMSA · 18/07/2025 16:40

Please do not let it be passed on to anyone else and offer it to your local tropical fish store 😢

This is the best idea. Or get the stuff required and look after it yourself.

DuckbilledSplatterPuff · 18/07/2025 21:06

doesn't want to cause a fuss? The fish has more backbone

Have you decided what you are going to do OP ?

If you want someone to update then stop with the snidey comments.

I appreciate tone is sometimes lost in text but I was genuinely offering my condolences, I would be horrified to find out my DH took part in animal cruelty for shits and giggles.

linaplatelover · 18/07/2025 22:05

Thanks for everyone’s input.

we are keeping the fish - dh has to pay the fine.

fish now has the correct supplies and already looks happier.

Im genuinely really shocked at his behaviour - I would never think he’d partake in this kind of behaviour, and neither would our friends or family.

Of course op’s DH, should have said no, want no part of this, stopped it, that’s the problem.Saying to op, sorry you found out the type of man you’ve married, what’s she supposed to do with that, he’s wrong, most importantly this ‘game’ is stopped.I just don’t see the point in making op feel worse.

Thanks for the update OP but why does your husband have to pay the fine if the fish hasn't died ?
What he's done is shown (guided by you presumably ) he's a better person than the rest of his team mates.
I sincerely hope they aren't going to repeat this ridiculous 'game'.

Make sure you tell the partners of the scum who are doing this too. It needs to end.

YankSplaining · 18/07/2025 22:27

Maybe this is a dumb question, but - if you have to pay money if the fish dies while you’re in charge of it, why was the fish so poorly cared for? I can understand being ignorant and getting the species wrong, but everyone knows fish need a clean environment.

Wouldyoutellhim · 18/07/2025 22:27

OP I agree this is so cruel 😞 poor fish. I agree with PP, tell them the fish died and pay the silly fine. In fact, tell them the fish died because someone dropped the tank so it's destroyed as otherwise I fear they would replace the fish if they are given the tiny tank back. I doubt they will be bothered to replace it if they think the fish tank is destroyed. Rehome the fish to a pet shop - you will likely have more success with this with small independent pet shops than you will from pets at home, or give to a friend with a tropical tank set up

The perfect solution. This everytime. What a bunch of losers treating it in this way to start with!!

CalmTheFuckDownMargaret · 18/07/2025 22:33

This is the sort of thing that makes my blood boil. Needless cruelty for giggles. Fucking bunch of bastards.

fourelementary · 18/07/2025 22:35

SilenceLover · 18/07/2025 16:40

Let them think it died and pay the fine if he doesn’t want to cause a fuss, then keep the fish, or rehome it responsibly. Personally I would be making a fuss though, can’t imagine wanting to associate with people who think that’s okay.

This!

Hjjja · 18/07/2025 16:50

Do you all eat fish and chips?

Spot on. Everyone is against animal abuse... until dinner time.

Kateb12 · 18/07/2025 22:58

Well clean the water and get a bigger tank for it then?

tip of the iceberg this though... (yes it is wrong and not something I would do personally) but much worse things happening in the world to get worked up over this.

MyFavouriteSpoon · 18/07/2025 23:06

Animal welfare professional here. Animal welfare act 2006 requires keepers of animals covered by the Act to meet their needs by law. Failure to do so can result in prosecution.

Absolutely report it to the RSPCA (England and Wales) or Scottish SPCA.

Either way, keep the fish and give the poor sentient animal the life it deserves.

thelakeisle · 18/07/2025 23:09

This would gross me out and creep me out completely. What a weird, sinister way for your dh to behave. I mean, I am sure you know this but cruelty to animals is one clear trait of psychopathy, and pretty much always leads to cruelty to humans. Has he done anything remotely like this before? Does he normally show empathy and compassion? Are there any other red flags?

StarDolphins · 18/07/2025 23:10

I would go absolutely berserk at this, what a bunch of dicks. Poor fish. I can’t abide any cruelty to animals at all. I would do what it takes to save it. WTH is wrong with grown adults playing shitty games at the expense of a living thing.

Champaganesupernova · 18/07/2025 23:14

what a weak little man, agreeing to be part of a prank to save face !! I would definitely tell the RSPCA of this disgraceful prank !! I couldn't look at my husband ever again to think he would even entertain this . Is the fish really being cared for or is it just words as everyone on here is so horrified ?

Didn’t you read op’s update? You’re not that bothered, so why should anyone else be.Strange view, not very helpful.

whynotwhatknot · 18/07/2025 23:22

so hes going to tell thejm it died? what happens next time they do this

they should grow the fuck up
