DH being cruel to small fish

linaplatelover · 18/07/2025 16:37

DH is part of a team sport - has been for years no issues usually with it.

he has brought home a small ‘goldfish’ in a tiny tank. This small fish has been passed around different team members. Apparently if it dies on your watch you have to pay a fine.

the fish clearly isn’t being cared for properly, the water is cloudy it has no filter or air stone.

Ive looked up the type of fish and it’s not even a goldfish - it’s a small orange tropical fish that requires a heater.

I'm absolutely furious! I hate any cruelty to animals and think this type of lads game from a 40 yr old man is ridiculous.

first off mumsnetters AIBU? And if you think no what should I do?

worst part is that DH agrees that it’s cruel but for some reason ‘doesn’t want to cause a fuss’

Oh please, it’s very unlikely any fish in a British fish and chip shop served battered is farmed.

Alucard55 · 18/07/2025 19:25

Perhaps I've misunderstood but this fish has been passed around idiot men and the OP is aware of this?

If the OP cared she would have taken action straight away not allow this cruel "game" to continue. It's a fish she can literally pick up and leave the house with not a grizzly bear.

Yes, we know, it can’t continue, but it’s not her fault. I just don’t think having a go at op, is in anyway helpful She’s the only one, who’s prepared to do something about this. It’s not just a case of keeping/rehoming the fish, it’s putting a stop to this happening again.

ErrolTheDragon · 18/07/2025 19:27

Pretty sure you’ve misunderstood and the first the OP knew of it was when he came home with the unfortunate fish.

I've misunderstood. I'll hope that I'm wrong and that when the OP next posts she has removed the fish or provided proper living conditions.

Yes, just give her a chance though. She needs supportive advice.

You really should educate yourself on the conditions your fish was kept in before being battered and served with your chips. I think you’ll find it’s not too different to this little goldfish, bar the overcrowding and disease you find more prevailing factory farmed fish.

Are you actually trying to saying fish from British fish and chip shops ie haddock, cod, plaice is generally farmed? Perhaps it’s you who needs educating. Check your facts before mounting your little attention seeking crusades

TomatoSandwiches · 18/07/2025 19:46

Sorry you found out the type of man you married is one like this.
Can you update on the poor fishy please.

ChristmasFluff · 18/07/2025 19:46

Take the fish to a place that sells similar fish and see if they will accept it.

Divorce your spinless husband. How can you ever respect him after this? Did you not know he was a moral coward when you married him? So unattractive.

No advice needed. Remove the fish and get rid of the husband.

SaintGermain · 18/07/2025 19:49

I could not be with a man that participated in such awful and prolonged and deliberate cruelty.

I would name and shame them all on social media and take the fish tomorrow if it’s still alive to a place that can help it, whether it be a rescue, aquarium centre or knowledgeable fish owner.

LemonLass · 18/07/2025 19:51

Hi @linaplatelover
*Buy a baby carrot.
*Put it in a poly bag with water
*Tell DH to make a "joke" when hands it on (that fish didnt make it)

If this pass the parcel is for "fun", how can these males not find the carrot hilarious, too?

Then contact pet shop or RSPCA to hand on appropriately.

What a bunch of "richard heads" your DH circulates with 😫

dawngreen · 18/07/2025 19:53

Yes say it died, and give it a new home . I would not give house room to any one who treated other species like that.

If you want someone to update then stop with the snidey comments.

MeridianB · 18/07/2025 20:03

Absolutely disgusting behaviour.

i would simply take the fish to the nearest pet shop that has tropical fish and hand it over to them. They will have isolation tanks they can keep it in while they assess and treat it and can then sell if it’s healthy.

I’d offer zero explanation to your H and make it clear that if he or anyone else mistreats any living creature again you will report it.

im not a vegan… sustainable beef farming has nothing to do with this argument. We’re talking about a fish here, hence me saying it is relevant to consider how fish are farmed

Just about every animal product we eat or use (in the form of leather etc) is farmed.

I agree that how fish are farmed is relevant just as how chickens, beef, pork etc is farmed. But OP is talking about a pet fish that is being passed around a group of man-children which is totally unacceptable IMO not a farmed fish.

When my DS wanted a pet I got him some goldfish to look after. They were very friendly & used to come to the top of the tank when they saw me as I was the one who fed them. When one became ill with a swim bladder problem & started to sink to the bottom of the tank, the others took turns in pushing it to the top of the tank demonstrating that they are sentient beings with a sense of companionship & care for others. I rang my local vets to ask for advice. I was told that the fish was dying. They were so grateful that I'd called & said usually people flush a dying fish down the loo which is cruel. I was advised to seal the dying fish into a plastic tub in some water from the tank & put it into the freezer when they would gradually get colder & colder.

Well judging by all the responses, many would disagree.

I feel haunted by this story. Rip little fish

Pinkissmart · 18/07/2025 20:17

My god.
How weak do you have to be to go along with this?

Freezing alive is really painful for a fish or any living creature. I can't believe a vet is advocating this. The most humane way is to add a small amount of clove oil to its water which will allow it to fall asleep and stop breathing painlessly.

shuggles · 18/07/2025 20:22

@linaplatelover How a man treats animals is one of the best ways to judge his character. If he has no regard for animals, then he is very likely to be abusive towards other people.

NewYearNewName25 · 18/07/2025 20:25

Interesting 2nd post, OP.

On the off chance this is genuine… do you seriously have sex with this bloke? Doesn’t your vag just completely dry up at the mere thought?

MrsTerryPratchett · 18/07/2025 20:26

Another thread where there’s loads of posts and the OP hasn’t been back.

I don’t bother responding in good faith to these types any more.

Plasticwaste · 18/07/2025 20:27

Prioritising "pet" animals from other animals is called speciesism. All animals deserve a life free from human cruelty. Sticking up for a "pet" fish while later chowing down on fish suppers is a double standard.

As to the poster who's the daughter of a farmer - what a revolutionary view that slaughtering animals for pleasure would be seen as normal. It's almost like growing up in an industry where animals are killed for their flesh might create a large blind spot to animal suffering.
