So why dont people use their fucking words?

"My DH doesnt read my mind and know that I like roses and hate violets. I've never told him I feel this way"

Use your fucking words and tell him

TheChosenTwo · 07/07/2025 16:57

Haha you’ve used yours quite effectively!

But there are a series of posts by totally wet lettuces who refuse to say a word at the time yet come and foam at the mouth on MN about a situation that would have been swiftly resolved at the time if they’d bothered to speak up. I’ve never used the term ‘use your words’ but it does seem appropriate sometimes given it’s what you’d say to a toddler who’s struggling to say what they want!

Candlemidnight · 07/07/2025 16:57

Oohhh I got a duplicate post, maybe my keyboard bashing was too forceful :-D

BastardesEverywhere · 07/07/2025 16:58

😂😂😂👏👏

JudgeBread · 07/07/2025 16:58

Same level of wit as "did you mean to be so rude?" With a head tilt and tinkly laugh thrown in for good measure.

The irony being that these are the same people who don't answer their doors or phones if they're not expecting anyone for fear of having to engage in an unexpected conversation.

It's the phrase "use your words" it's designed for children , you could say to another adult
"Why don't you have a conversation"
Or
"Listen mate, just fucking tell him"

Use your words is infantilising

I always found it odd too. It's another modernism like "you do you" which in my head basically means "I think I am correct, and you are not, but crack on".

Yes the advice is appropriate but talk to people like adults

Thanks OP, I thought I was alone in finding it extremely irritating!

holysmokee · 07/07/2025 17:01

It’s such a frustrating and condescending phrase, I don’t even say it to toddlers, however there are a lot of people on here that cannot assert themselves and I understand why it gets thrown around.

Its genuinely worrying the number of people that cannot advocate for themselves in the moment but run online to complain about non issues.

Yeah
Or
'Do what you like'

Why are they “their” words or “your” words?

It sounds so infantile - is that meant to be the point - that it’s a really patronising thing to say - as if the person you’re saying it to is a 2 year-old who only knows a few words and they should have a go at using them?

Hankunamatata · 07/07/2025 17:02

Because some people act like children in their posts and expect people to be mind readers

But when you take the option to admonish someone and treat them like a child because you are making a point which you think is very clever, it just makes you look like a cunt

I don't think I've ever used the phrase but, if I'm ever tempted, I will inwardly chastise myself and say "listen mate, just fucking tell him" instead. Thanks OP!

WonderingWanda · 07/07/2025 17:15

Well I do agree that "Use your words" is a bollocms phrase whether used at adults or children....it's so condescending. I always told my kids to "Speak properly" or "Speak up for yourself".

However, I have to confess I hate the expression "Get to fuck" I love a good swear but this makes no fucking sense whatsoever. Where is fuck and why do I need to get there?

Muchtoomuchtodo · 07/07/2025 17:17

It’s in the same lines as saying indoor voices and gentle hands to kids.

Just say what you mean - be quiet and stop hitting usually for the above!

SerafinasGoose · 07/07/2025 17:17

I love this post with this particular screen handle. Brilliant! (and if it isn't party etiquette it bloody well should be).

I agree that it's an infuriating phrase: not only infantile but also nonsensical. Words are not 'ours'. Language exists independently of us. By these criteria, anyone using these particular words comes across as none-too switched on, so the attempt to patronise is at least amusingly ironic.

See also:

'What did he say when you told him to stop doing that?/pack his bags?/leave the key on the table?/report him to the police?' - delete as appropriate.

Or the perennial metaphysical question 'why did you have a baby with this twat?'

The baby exists. The ship has fucking sailed.

Soontobe60 · 07/07/2025 17:18

I can’t recall any posts that have included that phrase. Are you having a bad day op?
