To feel so upset about the death of Diogo Jota?

I obviously didn't know him personally but I am a Liverpool fan and see him on the pitch every week. I just feel so upset by it, crying reading all the tributes. His poor poor family, to lose the 2 brothers. So sad.

@AlpacaMittensthats not really a nice post now is it?

40YearOldDad · 04/07/2025 13:57

No, shows you're empathetic, seeing him play within your family, ie Liverpool, even though you've likely never spoken to him, doesn't mean he's not been a part of your life, happy times, sad times. You can also relate to it on a personal level. I'm assuming you have children and immediate family,

GameOfJones · 04/07/2025 14:04

I'd never heard of him before yesterday but I read the news article and feel desperately sorry for their parents losing two sons like that. It's unimaginable.

I haven't written anything that is not-nice. I have repeatedly said that I have been heartbroken over it, and it's extremely sad, however it really looks like it was caused by extreme speed. What part of this is "not really nice"? I have all the sympathy in the world - but it's a Lambo. It's a supercar. It can go 200mph+. Frankly those cars shouldn't be out on the roads.

We need more awareness and campaigns against speeding, not ever nicer posts after tragic deaths.

NoraLuka · 04/07/2025 14:23

I’m sure we’ll find out sooner or later what caused the accident but until then none of us know and it seems distasteful to be speculating about it.

I was upset when I heard even though I don’t usually react like that. Arne Slot said in a way it had been a dream summer for Jota - wedding, winning the prem with Liverpool and the nation’s cup with Portugal. Then in a random instant it’s all over, it brings it home how fragile we all are.

My friend lost her son in a car accident. Yes, he was driving far too fast for the conditions and it's lucky no one else was killed.

He's still her son though. Do you think "knowing" it was his fault made the loss easier or harder to bear? What about everyone saying he got what he deserved on SM?

My seven year old cousin was killed by a 19 year old boy racer who smashed into her family’s car. He absolutely got what he deserved.

Maybe he did. But did his parents?

Maybe not, but I don’t feel my family should have to restrain our grief and anger out of respect for them.

He destroyed four people’s lives - he killed my cousin, permanently disabled her brother, and turned their parents into lifelong carers.

We have every right to express our anger at the destruction he left in his wake, and to be glad that he died too. It spared my aunt and uncle the pain of a trial, at the very least.

Obviously we don't know what happened here, but I have had a tyre blow out when driving at fairly low speed (around 30 mph) and it was absolutely terrifying, the car was completely uncontrollable and veered off the road, rolled and landed in a field. So I don't think people should be making assumptions until the full facts are known.

It’s been reported the road has a lot of accidents. There are a lot of potholes - could that be the cause of tire blowout. There are bends taken at high speed even if within the 75mph speed limit accidents have occurred.

ForeveraBluebird · 04/07/2025 15:32

@BeliesBelief , with respect what happened to your family is tragic and this is colouring your judgment. Some young drivers have accidents through inexperience, not every person who crashes is as in your sad case, a boy racer.
@SunShow’s friend lost her son, her grief is as valid as your own .

JasonTindallsTan · 04/07/2025 15:36

The way some posters project on here is absolutely insane ‘looks to be 100% avoidable’ etc.

We know zero of the circumstances beyond the fact he was overtaking (on a road that has more than one lane so not a remarkable observation), his tyre blew out, he was driving a lambo and the car ended up in flames.

Supercars aren’t exactly known for their safety record and often the location of the engine is in a different place to usual cars so crumple zones etc will be different, the outcome of hitting a pothole on a low hung car at speeds of 100KPH and blowing out a tyre is probably a lot different to doing the same in a Range Rover Sport.

Perhaps we should avoid condemning either Diogo or his brother until the wider facts are known.

Bonsaibaby · 04/07/2025 15:38

I don’t like football at all and I’m thinking about it too, it’s heartbreaking. They had everything and its been shattered.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 04/07/2025 15:55

@AlpacaMittens you don’t know how fast he was going or anything about it or him or his family so speculation like this isn’t nice. How about people just stick to what they know hey?

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 04/07/2025 15:57

@BeliesBeliefwith respect this situation is not the same as yours. These two men and their families do not deserve what has happened to them. I’m sorry for your loss

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 04/07/2025 16:14

I can't help but compare this thread to the ones speculating over the reasons why Rachel Reeves was crying during PMQs, where many posters were outraged at any hint of speculation about what the reason for her tears were.

Yet the premature death of two young men seems to be fair game to some.

IamMummyhearmeROAR · 04/07/2025 20:42

His parents, his wife and his children were my last thought last night and my first thought this morning. An all round decent man. Had the privilege of watching him play once at Anfield. Our lad from Portugal, our number 20. YNWA

I’m so sorry about what you and your family have been through and I apologise on behalf of those who have been unkind in their replies.

It is things like this that reinforce to me, there is no God. Bless his family and may him
and his brother both RIP.

Pebbles16 · 04/07/2025 22:54

I have wanted to post on this thread (but seeing some people's agendas, I have been reluctant).
As a person of Portuguese descent, I feel so sad. For his family, wife, children and country.
Why do people have to apportion blame? I know why people look for answers, and those that fit their agenda.
Sometimes, one doesn't have to make sense of a situation nor rationalise situations. They just are. And it's horrible.
I cannot imagine the pain his parents are experiencing: having both their boys ripped from them; his wife being widowed after a less than a fortnight; and young children being without their father.

A god cannot control people’s actions, we have free will and he chose to speed dangerously in a car

The police are looking into it as being a speeding accident. It’s on the news.

You do not know this.

Stripeyanddotty · 04/07/2025 23:13

@simsbustinoutmimi
Can you provide a link to that?
The police are investigating the tyre blow out - I can’t find any mention of speeding.

I just feel so bad for his family and, to be fair, also for the fans. You're a close bunch, and you've been through a lot. I'm a bluenose but most of my family are reds and everyone is just devastated. It's all the worse because he's so young, he's just been married, his family have lost two sons, and he seemed such a genuinely lovely person. And now he's gone.
My nana was telling me they were only travelling by car to catch a ferry to Liverpool because his doctor had told him not to fly. I don't know if that's true but I suppose it doesn't matter because nothing will bring him back. YANBU and YNWA mate.
