To not feel very sorry for woman stuck in Turkey.

I was reading about a woman stuck in Turkey. She was there with her partner who was having teeth implants. So they got drunk and she fell against the glasss shower screen in the hotel. And it smashed. So they did a runner. Police chase. Got caught put in jail. Told they owed £15k or else. Sad face. Hmm. Though it does seem very steep for a shower screen.

I am not saying it's right, but the report I read said she and he took drugs, trashed the room, and smashed the shower screen. It depends on how much damage there is; plus, if the glass screen damaged the shower and tray, it may need a whole replacement. Add into that cleaners and workmen's fees, and you would be talking about a big amount. Yet again, the British giving the British a bad reputation.😡🙄

Agree with this - especially as they lose income from the booked room while it’s being repaired. £15k for criminal damage seems quite light.

LBFseBrom · 20/06/2025 11:27

It makes no difference whether you feel sorry for her or not. Why so invested? It will work out and she, and her husband, will not make a similar mistake.

FluentRoseQuail · 20/06/2025 11:29

Ah, as part of my post I posted a link to her go fund me, forgetting that you can’t do that on here!!

anyway, her story in her words is written on her gfm. It’s a bit wild, talk of the mafia and potentially being murdered, but it does sound like the police have handled things badly. My problem is that she was given the £15k by her family, took advice to only offer £3k so did they and it got rejected and then has lost half the money paying to live out there instead.

GraceUnderPresure · 20/06/2025 11:29

If she'd broken the shower door by accident + told the hotel straight away full of apologies, she'd have still had to pay and you'd like to think that she'd have insurance to cover it.
BUT
She behaved stupidly, smashed the room up and tried to do a runner.
No sympathy from me, except for her daughter, in more ways than one...

Figcherry · 20/06/2025 11:30

To think for what it’s now costing the bf could have had implants done in the UK and looked a whole lot better.

teksquad · 20/06/2025 11:30

She should pay the 15K, silly woman,

ThatCyanCat · 20/06/2025 11:30

Obviously they did a very stupid and dishonest thing. A massive debt and indefinite prison do seem harsh for it, though...they didn't hurt anyone. They should certainly pay for the damage, even if that's in instalments, although doesn't the hotel have insurance?

I do feel a bit sorry for them because people get drunk and fall over and skedaddle all the time and it rarely comes to this. But I can't say it's not of their own making. Just hope they can pay their costs and come home poorer and wiser.

ETA: Sorry, just realised she's not in prison any more, didn't get much sleep last night. That makes a difference.

Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe went to a country which the UK Govt advises not to go to, spread propaganda according to the laws of that country, but middle class so it's jolly awful and there's a big outcry.

She did no such thing. She was visiting her family with her young child, was taken as a political prisoner and only released when we had payed Iran a long-standing debt we owed them.

It is in no way comparable to this pair what so ever and the fact that NZR was forcibly parted from her child for years is pretty bloody terrible actually.

Yep this. To draw a parallel with that and this case is totally wrong and shows the poster does not understand what happened to Nazanin and why it happened

BatchCookBabe · 20/06/2025 11:40

Agree @Viviennemary Not a scrap of sympathy for the silly mare. As has been said, it was clearly waaaaaay more than just a smashed shower screen. Dreadful behaviour, but I bet she gets SOME people contributing to her sad little GoFundMe page! 🙄

cestlavielife · 20/06/2025 11:40

They should have just paid the money the family gave them 15k and left then tried from UK to argue their points

amooseymoomum · 20/06/2025 11:43

I've seen those teeth on quite a few folks. I'm so proud of them, they boast, but they look awful. The natural colour of teeth is more off-white.

kkloo · 20/06/2025 11:44

She's also claiming it's the Turkish mafia who owned the hotel and that they were all in cahoots to charge her for as much as possible. Apparently she's in fear because she's being watched so she's moved out to a hotel further away.

I mean if you thought any kind of mafia were after you and the whole system was corrupt then surely you'd just pay the fine and get home safely, not sure why she'd think a basic lawyer would be able to sort that shitshow for her.

DeSoleil · 20/06/2025 11:45

It’s grotty people behaving badly abroad that give the British people a bad name.

they broke something and should pay.

She caused damage - she needs to pay,

Not sure why they need a Go Fund Me... But they probably don't have insurance!

I don't think you can buy insurance that would cover you for deliberately destroying hotel property. Even if you could buy it, drink and drugs would probably invalidate it.

Katiesaidthat · 20/06/2025 11:55

Shenmen · 20/06/2025 10:23

I'm going to feel a bit sorry for her (not him). She is or has been obviously seriously mentally ill and psychotic. Anti psychotics are fucking horrible. Yes she shouldn't have drunk but when I was on them no one told me that! Also being ill enough to take antipsychotics often means you have poor decision making and strong draw towards alcohol and drugs.

I´m not being nasty but, aren´t prospectus there to be read? Or doesn´t medication come with them in the UK? It tells you what it´s for, incompatibilities etc etc surely?

FluentRoseQuail · 20/06/2025 11:56

cestlavielife · 20/06/2025 11:40

Exactly, why they tried to just pay £3000 I don’t know, they should have just paid and left.

Shes raised £830 so far.

AngelicKaty · 20/06/2025 11:58

GiveMeSpanakopita · 20/06/2025 10:25

I do feel sorry for her because a shower door doesn't cost £15k to replace and Turkish police are notoriously brutal.

More generally I'm fascinated by the fact that sympathy for Brits in trouble abroad seems broadly to delineate itself along lines of class loyalty/snobbery rather than an honest appraisal of the facts.

Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe went to a country which the UK Govt advises not to go to, spread propaganda according to the laws of that country, but middle class so it's jolly awful and there's a big outcry.

Kate & gerry McCann neglect their infant children in favour of a night drinking and lose one, but doctors, so therefore it's all so awful and let's throw the full weight of the Met behind them.

Woman goes to Turkey for dental work, neglecting neither her children nor insisting on going to a known dangerous country, is cruelly treated by the police and held hostage in that country, but she's working class, so, ha ha ha ha and she deserves it.

Edited

£15k wouldn't just be for the shower screen - it would include labour costs and lost revenue for the nights the hotel can't rent out the room until it's fixed. And if the "Turkish police are notoriously brutal", this couple should have known that and behaved themselves.
As for your "honest appraisal of the facts" to use Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe and Kate and Gerry McCann as convenient middle-class comparators to this woman is ignorant in the extreme. Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe took her daughter on holiday to Iran to visit her parents and was convicted and imprisoned for "plotting to overthrow the Iranian Govt", but no evidence was provided for this charge whatsoever. It's widely accepted that her conviction and imprisonment were politically motivated and should never have happened - they were trumped up charges designed to pressurise the British Govt. Kate and Gerry McCann had dinner with their friendship group (not "a night drinking" as you disingenuously wrote) within their holiday complex within sight of their own apartment - they aren't the first parents to do this on holiday and they won't be the last, but despite being doctors, they have been regularly and viciously attacked in the press and on (anti)social media, which defeats your argument about them getting special treatment (the Met' police became involved in their case because the Portuguese police had proven themselves to be incompetent).
This woman's DD and the relative danger of Turkey are irrelevant. She committed criminal damage and then tried to evade justice (repeatedly). To attempt to compare her case to those of Zaghari-Ratcliffe and the McCanns is ludicrous and hugely insulting to them considering the appalling injustices they've suffered.

LlynTegid · 20/06/2025 11:59

No sympathy.

No comparison with the McCanns (whose neglect and PR exercise I object to and feel sorry for their other children), nor Nazanin Zaghari-Radcliffe visiting her home country.

It doesn't really matter whether the hotel have Twat Insurance.

I dint think many people would be happy to have them stay at their house, have them trash it and then be expected to claim on their home insurance, complete with premium hikes for subsequent years, because they've been twats and think someone else should pay for them.

Shenmen · 20/06/2025 12:07

Not nasry just maybe a bit naive about the nature of severe mental health conditions. When I was really ill my grasp on reality was pretty poor (I genuinely thought I was Krishna at one point and the second coming the next). Reading inserts to meds was pretty low on things likely to happen.

Also antipsychotics are heavy drugs that stop the ability to think, straight if at all. I wouldn't have looked out of place ina room full of people who had had lobotomies at points.
