To not feel very sorry for woman stuck in Turkey.

I was reading about a woman stuck in Turkey. She was there with her partner who was having teeth implants. So they got drunk and she fell against the glasss shower screen in the hotel. And it smashed. So they did a runner. Police chase. Got caught put in jail. Told they owed £15k or else. Sad face. Hmm. Though it does seem very steep for a shower screen.

Tbh, I do feel sorry for her after reading her GoFundMe. She was stupid, but it sounds like it's all got quite tricky and it does sound like she's in an awful situation. I noticed that she's glossed over the damage to the room somewhat and I think that it wasn't at all obvious that she should have run away from the hotel, but if she was taking antipsychotics and drinking, that's not a combination that screams balanced thinking.

I hope there's some way of sorting the situation out.

I think there’s a fairly long history of celebs trashing hotel rooms, joys of a party lifestyle and we all have a little snigger and they cough up the cash.

Provided the money is paid it’s just stupid behaviour and everyone moves on. No one was hurt. I don’t really think it’s about class but wrecking hotel rooms is really a preserve of the rich.

Nonsense. The difference is "they cough up the cash ...". Had this couple admitted to the hotel staff what they'd done and offered to pay for the damage, or immediately paid over the £15k her family subsequently raised, everyone would have moved on and she'd be home by now. This has nothing to do with her not being rich - this is about her having a lousy moral compass (there are plenty of people who aren't well off who still have great values - she just isn't one of them).

£15k wouldn't just be for the shower screen - it would include labour costs and lost revenue for the nights the hotel can't rent out the room until it's fixed. And if the "Turkish police are notoriously brutal", this couple should have known that and behaved themselves.
As for your "honest appraisal of the facts" to use Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe and Kate and Gerry McCann as convenient middle-class comparators to this woman is ignorant in the extreme. Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe took her daughter on holiday to Iran to visit her parents and was convicted and imprisoned for "plotting to overthrow the Iranian Govt", but no evidence was provided for this charge whatsoever. It's widely accepted that her conviction and imprisonment were politically motivated and should never have happened - they were trumped up charges designed to pressurise the British Govt. Kate and Gerry McCann had dinner with their friendship group (not "a night drinking" as you disingenuously wrote) within their holiday complex within sight of their own apartment - they aren't the first parents to do this on holiday and they won't be the last, but despite being doctors, they have been regularly and viciously attacked in the press and on (anti)social media, which defeats your argument about them getting special treatment (the Met' police became involved in their case because the Portuguese police had proven themselves to be incompetent).
This woman's DD and the relative danger of Turkey are irrelevant. She committed criminal damage and then tried to evade justice (repeatedly). To attempt to compare her case to those of Zaghari-Ratcliffe and the McCanns is ludicrous and hugely insulting to them considering the appalling injustices they've suffered.

You mean a group of doctors went on holiday, all left their kids in the apartments instead of not going to dinner, or only one of the adults staying in the apartment to make sure their child were safe.

Why is it that if I go to the corner shop, 90 second walk, I get called a bad mum despite having room wifi cameras. Yet you are saying this group of rich couples, who all did it, are somehow better? They weren't in eye sight or else they would have been Maddy leave

She's also claiming it's the Turkish mafia who owned the hotel and that they were all in cahoots to charge her for as much as possible. Apparently she's in fear because she's being watched so she's moved out to a hotel further away.

I mean if you thought any kind of mafia were after you and the whole system was corrupt then surely you'd just pay the fine and get home safely, not sure why she'd think a basic lawyer would be able to sort that shitshow for her.

Those opinions are probably why she takes antypsichotics...

Ilikeadrink14 · 20/06/2025 12:18

Might have been worth it if the teeth had been ok, but they are dreadful! Shark-like and false. They deserved all they got! The people who paid into the go-fund-me account need to get some sense. There are starving children they could give their money to, not chavs who want gravestones for teeth!

ThisGutsyBalonz · 20/06/2025 12:19

Why are they on prison. Why would the country keep them for six weeks etc?

Yes, this is a more accurate description.

Or insurance if you travel for a medical procedure Afaik.

You can actually get specialist medical travel insurance to cover medical treatment abroad.

She is correcting a previous poster who described it differently. She is not the first one to bring up this family on this thread.

Do you know, it had never occurred to me that overseas procedures weren’t covered by ‘normal’ travel insurance actually.

TheIceBear · 20/06/2025 12:24

This was a very stupid thing to do in a country like turkey. I wouldn’t go there for a cosmetic procedure or surgery anyway. It may be cheaper than alternatives but it’s absolutely not worth the risk they don’t have the same standard of infection control etc. no idea what their justice system is like but I don’t want to find out

Bruisername · 20/06/2025 12:24

Other than being abroad I don’t think you can compare this to the McCann at all. There are many Brits who get caught abroad for many reasons but committing a crime and then claiming stupidity really irritates me (xref those who smuggle in vast quantities of drugs and are then surprised they’re not sent home with a slap on the wrist)

she made a very poor decision in listening to her lawyer - she should have paid up and gone home.

£15k isn’t that much when it comes to that kind of damage and loss of income.

Portakalkedi · 20/06/2025 12:25

Moronic idiots, and what kind of people give money to this kind of begging website? Really boggles the mind. If you've got money to spare there are many more appropiate places to donate to.

Possibly but those opinions would also make you pay up and get out of there, not try to fight the system.

tammienorrie · 20/06/2025 12:28

I struggled through the barely-literate begging story on Go Fund Me.

There are things that on the face of it are troubling - she claims to have been refused access to a lawyer and translator which isn't great. She claims the system is corrupt.

But the basis of the story is that she trashed the hotel room and rather than explain herself to the hotel, she did a runner. She was then stopped and arrested, and spent ONE NIGHT in a prison and was then released. She was told to pay £15k to make it all go away but she thought that was too much and offered £3k, which was refused. She has been told she cannot leave Turkey until her court case and has tried twice to breach this, once by trying to get a flight, once by trying to catch a ferry. She is now waiting in Turkey for her case to come to trial.

All the stuff about "my baby girl" and boo hooing about mistakes is doing her no favours - she is not taking responsibility for her stupid decisions.

Classic chavs abroad really.

Can confirm by the obligatory tattoos. No money to pay for damage but happily waste it on tattoos.

Shenmen · 20/06/2025 12:07

Not nasry just maybe a bit naive about the nature of severe mental health conditions. When I was really ill my grasp on reality was pretty poor (I genuinely thought I was Krishna at one point and the second coming the next). Reading inserts to meds was pretty low on things likely to happen.

Also antipsychotics are heavy drugs that stop the ability to think, straight if at all. I wouldn't have looked out of place ina room full of people who had had lobotomies at points.

Thanks @Shenmen Most people are treating this as simply a story of a foolish and irresponsible woman who has caused a lot of damage and got what she deserved. Maybe that's a fair view but, given we only have the reports of the Daily M and Manchester Eve News to go by (🙄), the headline in another paper could have been 'woman with serious mental health problem denied access to medication in Turkey after psychotic episode'. We've no idea which version is more accurate or whether it's a bit of both. Several posters are referring to 'drugs' but I can't see any mention of recreational drugs. Anti-psychotics are only given to people who are seriously mentally unwell and who may have impaired decision making. According to the stories, her partner's role in all this seems to be just to have teeth. Clearly there's more to this than a typical DM /MEN spin.

She did have the money to pay for it, but for some reason she didn’t pay and offered £3k instead and said a lawyer told her to do it. So ridiculous. Just pay then the damned money and you can leave.

fish2311 · 20/06/2025 12:43

The bit ‘police chase. Got caught’ is what they probably didn’t expect as I’m sure in the uk they are used to getting away/ seeing people get away with all sorts.
Some countries actually treat ‘small’ crime still as a crime.

Noshadelamp · 20/06/2025 12:44

She's saying the Turkish mafia chased them from the hotel, so this sounds like drugs were involved. She's not going to admit to doing a runner to avoid paying for some drugs.

You're wrong. The Ocean Club's restaurant they were eating at was on the opposite side of the pool from the McCann's apartment, 55 meters (180 ft) away, within their sight-line, and the adults took it in turns to check up on the children. Just because the apartment was within their sight-line doesn't mean they would have seen Maddy being abducted - there were windows on both sides of the apartment. Like the majority of people on holiday, they were relaxed and just couldn't conceive of such a terrible thing happening - just as you can't conceive of something terrible happening to your children when you go to the corner shop, but it could, yet you still do it. So, FWIW, I don't think you're a bad parent any more than I think the McCann's are and at no point have I said that "rich couples are somehow better" than you (or anyone else). If other people IRL call you a bad mum you should have it out with them and not project your insecurities onto me.
