To not feel very sorry for woman stuck in Turkey.

I was reading about a woman stuck in Turkey. She was there with her partner who was having teeth implants. So they got drunk and she fell against the glasss shower screen in the hotel. And it smashed. So they did a runner. Police chase. Got caught put in jail. Told they owed £15k or else. Sad face. Hmm. Though it does seem very steep for a shower screen.

I do feel sorry for her because a shower door doesn't cost £15k to replace and Turkish police are notoriously brutal.

More generally I'm fascinated by the fact that sympathy for Brits in trouble abroad seems broadly to delineate itself along lines of class loyalty/snobbery rather than an honest appraisal of the facts.

Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe went to a country which the UK Govt advises not to go to, spread propaganda according to the laws of that country, but middle class so it's jolly awful and there's a big outcry.

Kate & gerry McCann neglect their infant children in favour of a night drinking and lose one, but doctors, so therefore it's all so awful and let's throw the full weight of the Met behind them.

Woman goes to Turkey for dental work, neglecting neither her children nor insisting on going to a known dangerous country, is cruelly treated by the police and held hostage in that country, but she's working class, so, ha ha ha ha and she deserves it.

I think the key difference is, though what the others did was wrong, there was no malicious intent.
These two trashed the entire room, smashed the glass, then decided to run away, there is an element of Karma to it.
Kate and Gerry were fools but nobody especially not their daughter deserved what happened.

@SalfordQuays The use of the word chav is unpleasant and in my view discriminatory. Read ‘Chav - The Demonisation of the Working Class’…. these two people are not representative of any particular group. They made a stupid mistake. That’s all.

They are definitely chavs.

Working class ≠ chav.

Decent working class people would not have done this, decent working class people would be wasting money going to Turkey to have veneers done in the first place.

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 20/06/2025 10:51

Fuck me, those teeth can probably be seen from space.

TutTutTutSigh · 20/06/2025 10:53

She's not a chav because she's working class, she's a chav because she got off her face and smashed up a hotel room and is now begging for money on social media.

*I was born in the same town, I'm working class, she's a scruff.

That article doesn’t give any extra information though.

Can you not see the massive broken glass wall? That’s not a door, it’s the smashed ‘shower screen’

Hahahaha, the author of this book went to Oxford and his parents were wealthy as anything, the only working class people he ever met were those who came to clean his house.
The wealthy have a ludicrous romanticisation of the lower class, anyone who's ever lived in a council estate (myself for 20 years) can tell you that stereotyping can quite literally save your life, not all stereotypes are true, but that doesn't mean NONE of them are.

She did no such thing. She was visiting her family with her young child, was taken as a political prisoner and only released when we had payed Iran a long-standing debt we owed them.

It is in no way comparable to this pair what so ever and the fact that NZR was forcibly parted from her child for years is pretty bloody terrible actually.

PeggyMitchellsCameo · 20/06/2025 10:58

Considering she’s on anti-psychotic meds, getting so drunk you break a shower screen is not the best idea.
I know Turkey is a popular destination, but it is a different system and they are clearly sending a message. Don’t come here, do damage, without paying, and think you can ride off into the sunset.
It probably is extreme in terms of the £15,000 and the prison situation. I feel for her 12 year old daughter in this, how awful for her.
I know someone who went there for ‘teef’ and was in absolute agony. Went back for a tummy tuck - same. She was out in bars every night, full of pain meds, even between having her teeth filed and the new ones fitted. Drunk as anything.
Also - very middle class.

Looking at the article linked to, it's a pretty big shower door tbh and might not be easily available so they could be accruing costs for loss of income if the room is out of action while it is made and fitted.

Nothing to do with her "class". Absolutely she's liable for the costs!

I'm not sure the outcomes of her causing the damage and then trying to leave the country without paying would be the same over here, but she's not here, so has to abide by whatever the laws are in Turkiye.

Bruisername · 20/06/2025 10:59

I’m not surprised it’s £15k. Buying the replacements and getting it installed will be a chunk but they are probably including loss of earnings because they won’t be able to rent the room out for a while

I'm sure when it comes to it the hotel will be able to itemise it

i think her lawyer is seeing dollar signs!!! She’ll probably spend more on the lawyer than he claims he can reduce the charge by

Yes, but the shower screen was already reported, that’s not new. There isn’t any information about how the room itself was destroyed, like tv, furniture, things like that.

Hollyhobbi · 20/06/2025 11:00

Of course I feel sorry for her, she's in fucking jail, it's not as funny as you think it is.

But she's stupid and common and drunk, she deserves it right, hahahahaha.

Turkish jails are notoriously awful. The article mentioned it is full of men
Are they separated from the women?
She may not be BFF material but she's a.Brit stuck in a hell hole. Her own fault, of course, but that doesn't mean anyone should gloat over what has happened to her.

She says herself she was only in jail for one day.

No, they didn't make a stupid "mistake" - they made a stupid decision (several, actually).

She’s in a hotel now spending the £15k her family raised for her to pay her fine and go home, she’s spending it on hotels instead because she thinks it’s too much to pay 15k

I think there’s a fairly long history of celebs trashing hotel rooms, joys of a party lifestyle and we all have a little snigger and they cough up the cash.

Provided the money is paid it’s just stupid behaviour and everyone moves on. No one was hurt. I don’t really think it’s about class but wrecking hotel rooms is really a preserve of the rich.

snowmichael · 20/06/2025 11:18

I suspect with no knowledge whatsoever, that a) there was more damage than just a broken screen and b) that an element of that is a fine for doing a runner and wasting police resources to catch them

Zero sympathy

Who thinks it’s funny?

But as far as I’m concerned, people who get pissed enough to cause damage like that in a foreign country, don’t deserve anyone’s sympathy. Drunks who can’t control their own behaviour are a PITA anywhere.
