To not feel very sorry for woman stuck in Turkey.

I was reading about a woman stuck in Turkey. She was there with her partner who was having teeth implants. So they got drunk and she fell against the glasss shower screen in the hotel. And it smashed. So they did a runner. Police chase. Got caught put in jail. Told they owed £15k or else. Sad face. Hmm. Though it does seem very steep for a shower screen.

She was only in jail for 1 day.
She's just in Turkey now, apparently she can't leave until she pays the money, her family raised the money but her lawyer said they're looking for too much so she didn't pay it.

To be honest 15k seems a lot but then it might be a custom made screen if it's not standard size. Also in assuming every day she doesn't pay they can't rent out the room so are losing money on it. Installation. It's not like it was an accident.
The damage happened directly as a consequence of her own actions. Why should the hotel be out of pocket just because they're a business.

RafaistheKingofClay · 20/06/2025 10:20

15k is an awful lot of Turkish lira. How much damage did they do?

DoYouReally · 20/06/2025 10:22

Her bill and lack of freedom is basically an idiot tax. Zero sympathy.

Shenmen · 20/06/2025 10:23

I'm going to feel a bit sorry for her (not him). She is or has been obviously seriously mentally ill and psychotic. Anti psychotics are fucking horrible. Yes she shouldn't have drunk but when I was on them no one told me that! Also being ill enough to take antipsychotics often means you have poor decision making and strong draw towards alcohol and drugs.

tammienorrie · 20/06/2025 10:23

Did she walk into the shower screen with her ridiculous lips?

No sympathy.

GiveMeSpanakopita · 20/06/2025 10:25

I do feel sorry for her because a shower door doesn't cost £15k to replace and Turkish police are notoriously brutal.

More generally I'm fascinated by the fact that sympathy for Brits in trouble abroad seems broadly to delineate itself along lines of class loyalty/snobbery rather than an honest appraisal of the facts.

Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe went to a country which the UK Govt advises not to go to, spread propaganda according to the laws of that country, but middle class so it's jolly awful and there's a big outcry.

Kate & gerry McCann neglect their infant children in favour of a night drinking and lose one, but doctors, so therefore it's all so awful and let's throw the full weight of the Met behind them.

Woman goes to Turkey for dental work, neglecting neither her children nor insisting on going to a known dangerous country, is cruelly treated by the police and held hostage in that country, but she's working class, so, ha ha ha ha and she deserves it.

Wheresthebeach · 20/06/2025 10:26

This sort of behaviour is why the anti tourist movement is gaining ground.

I thought that and did a bit of digging. She’s completely under stated how much damage they did.

"Celebrating him getting veneers" can't get past that 😂

Inlimboin50s · 20/06/2025 10:31

No sympathy. She is an embarrassment. I wonder if she has written to the hotel and apologised wholeheartedly but no,people like her put the blame on anything else. She won't be thinking about her behaviour and actions, she's just worried about herself,so good for Turkey and shame on her.

MoreWalking · 20/06/2025 10:31

How much would his teeth have cost? It looks like she had already had hers done.

OnTheBoardwalk · 20/06/2025 10:31

And the fact she's tried to leave the country illegally 3 times!!

hididdlyho · 20/06/2025 10:32

Was it a veneer reveal party?

Soal · 20/06/2025 09:42

Of course I feel sorry for her, she's in fucking jail, it's not as funny as you think it is.

But she's stupid and common and drunk, she deserves it right, hahahahaha.

Do you feel sorry for all criminals in jail? How would you feel if she'd caused £15k of criminal damage to your house or car? It isn't because she's "stupid and common and drunk" that she deserves to be in jail, it's because she committed a crime. 🙄

Those aren’t even remotely comparable. Find a so-called middle class (am in NI - we don’t have much time for all that class shit) person who has trashed a hotel room after getting drunk. You know, someone who has actually done the same or similar. Can’t imagine there would be much in the way of sympathy.

Chocolatemasculinity · 20/06/2025 10:37

@SalfordQuays The use of the word chav is unpleasant and in my view discriminatory. Read ‘Chav - The Demonisation of the Working Class’…. these two people are not representative of any particular group. They made a stupid mistake. That’s all.

notacooldad · 20/06/2025 10:38

What a clown!
Getting pissed to celebrate boyfriends new teeth! 🤣

ThisIsMyYearToFindMyself · 20/06/2025 10:38

That article doesn’t give any extra information though.

Exactly, I can imagine the trashing of hotel rooms at The Ritz/Savoy if there was people would not be amused

AboutTheYoungIdea · 20/06/2025 10:39

@GiveMeSpanakopita you do have a point but she really has brought it on herself - there are stereotypes for a reason.

Goinggreymammy · 20/06/2025 10:42

Article says the "mum of one says her 12 year old daughter keeps calling asking when she's coming home". Well she should have thought of her daughter before heading off to babysit her boyfriend going to the dentist in Turkey.

ThisIsMyYearToFindMyself · 20/06/2025 10:43

@GiveMeSpanakopita

Well not really. It’s more like ‘woman goes on holiday, takes drugs, gets drunk, her and her boyfriend smash the shower screen, ‘trash the room’, attempt to do a runner, gets arrested, refuses to speak to police, refuses to pay up despite family providing the full amount, attempt to leave the country three times despite police telling her not to’.

Her daughter is nothing to do with it.

It might seem like a lot but her family had raised the money so she should have just paid it rather than staying stuck there spending the money on hotels and living etc. Absolute madness.

notacooldad · 20/06/2025 10:45

They made a stupid mistake. That’s all.
Which bit was a mistake?
Getting pissed while taking an anti psychotic drug?
Throwing things around the room and smashing the glass?
Doing a runner from the hotel before getting caught?
Trying to escape to Greece on a ferry?

What a numpty!
