To say that most heavy duty physical labour is done by men? When was the last time a female plumber, builder, roofer, painter and decorator, drain unblocker, or boiler or washing machine engineer came to your house?

When was the last time you had a female roofer, painter and decorator, someone to unblock the drains, the boiler engineer, the plumber, the window cleaner who attended you? Me. NEVER.

Who cares?

I've has a "random male" in my house for the past week to do a painting job that was needed. Are you serious 😐 😒

I can't believe you seriously need a man to do a painting job. I painted my entire house on my own last summer, and will do the exterior next year. Only got someone in for the papering because it was a particular type of paper and I haven't papered before.
I love decorating. Hubby doesn't, and isn't great on ladders.
And yes, I am deadly serious, some women don't like having strange men in the house. Never bothered me, but there is a market for it.

I see one of the Father's 4 Justice crew has had a bit too much to drink today and found his way onto Mumsnet 😂 Reddit is that-a-way my man 👉

BrickHare · 15/06/2025 19:27

Where is the heavy lifting involved in plumbing, painter, drain unblocker, boiler or washing machine engineer? As a HCP I often see many women sometimes some probably weigh about 7 stone hosting patients that are 20 plus stone. None of those examples are “heavy lifting”

I know what you mean OP. There used to be a lot of barriers in the way for women to get into the trades, most are not there anymore and any determined young woman could get into it if they wanted to.

But most young women don't want to and that's the problem really. And many trades don't even need physical strength, although it's quite easy to become strong if needed.

So the equality fought so hard for seems to just surround childbirth and 'rights' due to that, further fulfilling the patriarchal society.

I blame it on the Spice Girls, not personally of course, but from then on all efforts before were downgraded to getting what you want by having a bit of 'sexy' about you. To attract men.....

My dd is learning several trades in college. Do you know how hard it is to use tools that are twice as big as your hand? There are tons of fucking barriers to women getting into the trades!

Wtf is the point of your post? Yes, more men work in manual labour. No one is disputing this. If all tradesmen stopped working, yes it would be a problem. The same as if all social workers, carers, teachers and nurses (all professions which are mainly women) stopped working.

Are you a bit dim?

Maybe men should go on strike for a week and if you need any of these jobs done they won't get done. Seriously. This is all because women simply don't want to do these jobs that involve hard physical labour.

😂

That would be amazing
Female trade people might actually get a chance in male dominated business they've traditionally been kept out of!

Decorating wallpaper, and most DIY I do myself, vagina and all!

Cleaners, care workers all do heavy lifting. Women do hard work, it's just the under valued and under appreciated work they're "allowed" to do.

PandoraSocks · 15/06/2025 19:28

I do all the decorating, like lots of women. My elderly neighbours use a female only plumbing company and a female gardener.

FeckOffFecker · 15/06/2025 19:29

Women were told they "can't" do most jobs until they did them anyway and it became women's work.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 15/06/2025 19:29

Last electrician was female, as were the last two boiler engineers.

oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends · 15/06/2025 19:29

I have the option to do dirty, hard, physical, labour for other people.

I choose not to do so.

This. ^ @YourAmplePlumPoster How embarrassing for you, having a MAN in to paint your house. This is bog standard entry-level shit. 😆

Really thick if she can't even manage a painting job on her own. Good Lord, it must cost her a fortune if she can't do basics like that.

Once more.... what is your point?

GlamOrc · 15/06/2025 19:30

I had a British gas engineer round to fix the boiler on Thursday, does that count?

Obviously, men on the whole are bigger and stronger than women, that brooks no argument. But many of the professions you have named don't actually require that much brute strength, just a minimum level of fitness.

So women are perfectly capable of doing them, however whether they are signposted to them from a young age, or whether they avoid them due to a perception that they will be harassed in a largely male environment is another matter entirely.

There could be an interesting discussion, unfortunately it tends to be a rather specific loser type of man who brings this up with no context as some sort of 'gotcha' for those silly uppity feminist cows who cheekily reckon they are just as good as men and just as deserving of respect and opportunities in the workplace.

Imagine that.

BrickHare · 15/06/2025 19:30

The jobs you posted are very necessary for society but what I see very clearly is that all jobs you have listed to not require higher education or a degree. So by your own post are you saying the men who do these jobs just aren’t as educated as women?

They can do them if they have to though. Remember when women were doing all the “men’s jobs” during the war?

Sure. If all men went on strike today we’d have a problem as we don’t have enough women presently trained in these fields. That doesn’t mean we couldn’t do the work. WWII proved this when women took over all the manual jobs when men were sent off to war. Women excelled. That was 70 years ago.
not sure why you are so clueless about this.

many women wanted to continue when the menz came home but it was deemed unfair and damaging to society to take jobs away from the menz
