To say that most heavy duty physical labour is done by men? When was the last time a female plumber, builder, roofer, painter and decorator, drain unblocker, or boiler or washing machine engineer came to your house?

OP posts:

What I find interesting is that women obviously 'cant' do these jobs due to being shorter and frailer than men, but if I call an engineer and a 5 '6 man who weighs 9 stone shows up not one person would question his ability to do the electricity/painting/plumbing. So it must be that the extra power is in the penis somewhere?

YourAmplePlumPoster · 15/06/2025 19:12

Thats maybe because women don't want to do this kind of work. We all know that we can't beat men when it comes to sports as Navratilova said so why do we think we have the strength to clambour about on roofs or climb into sewage drains?

I went up on my roof when it was being re-tiled and have also done a course on working in confined spaces which included going into underground pipes. Can’t say I struggled with either.
I’ve also replaced the engine in a car, rebuilt a motorbike, painted and decorated, moved all my furniture to a new house, have plumbed in and fixed washing machines and fixed electrical things around the house. Have never had a go at a boiler but I’m not CORGI registered.
But maybe the OP is right and us weak women should spend our lives prostrate on a chaise longue with barely the strength to lift a lavender scented handkerchief to our feminine brows.
🙄

My husband like to laugh and say everyone is keen for 50% ratio when it comes to ensuring women are CEOs or in senior roles, but no one seems to be calling for more female bin men!
(He’s all for equality in all roles- just a silly joke he made!)

yes those roles are still majority male, but not inaccessible to women. Many women are not attracted to these type of roles.

I’m struggling to see what part is the joke?

BIossomtoes · 15/06/2025 19:37

Our decorator is a woman.

Can you do without these men? You can try it out and see.

Ever seen a horsey girl pick up a bale of hay?

If a woman is capable of lifting and shifting bales of hay then a woman is capable of pulling out / pushing in a washing machine
To do any more moving of white goods I would expect a professional to use suitable MHE

I wouldn’t expect a heating engineer to pull out my boiler, a painter shouldn’t be carrying anything much heavier than their ladder and a roofer picking up some tiles

Of course! It's a favour.

Oh ha ha yes! 😆 Even my own DH likes to inform me that he's 'saved me a job' because he's done the washing up! For the 3rd time in 9 months. Bless him, what would I do without him?! 😂

We have a female plumber…

missymousey · 15/06/2025 19:39

I'm a gardener and I know lots of other women gardeners. It seems to appeal to women in a way that plumbing etc doesn't, even though it's far more physical labour than some of the trades you mentioned. I'm out in all weathers doing heavy work quite a lot of the time. I think there are more routes into horticulture whereas an apprenticeship for most the trades is quite a male dominated environment.

What a selfless soul.

Aw. Did he have to have a lie down in a darkened room afterwards? 😂

CandyLeBonBon · 15/06/2025 19:39

Well I do 80% of those jobs myself! Can’t do the booker as I’m not gas registered, and can’t roof as I’m not trained, and after my knee replacement I’m fairly sure I wouldnt manage it these days, but I’ve done all the other jobs myself so I’m afraid I disagree. I know of female plumbers and decorators in my area. Having a vagina doesn’t make you incapable of doing these jobs!

I do my own painting/decorating. I decorated the local community centre too. There were 2 women and 2 men doing that. I do as much of my own DIY/plumbing as I can.
My landlord does use a plumbing/ boiler company that has a woman gas safety engineer because he knows I don't like being in the house with unknown men due to previous abuse.
As a child my mum used do all the decorating. She learned how to replace broken floorboards and artex a ceiling too.

Ohmych · 15/06/2025 19:40

My window cleaners are a husband and wife team.

Stillamum3 · 15/06/2025 19:40

My daughter was a self-employed plumber for 5 years. After that, she got her HGV licence, but found that the misogyny she encountered made that job really unpleasant. She now installs fast fibre for Openreach, climbs telegraph poles and all the other things that entails. She's the only woman in her team, but is treated with respect and is good at her job.

mambojambodothetango · 15/06/2025 19:40

We have a female painter decorator and a female gardener. We also have a female cleaner and I would class this in the same general group of jobs.

My sister is a nurse in a long term mental health ward, she's hoisting 20stone men with schizophrenia and wiping bums and cleaning foreskins. It's pretty physical. Gets attacked a lot. Huge number of the female workforce doing similar as nurses or carers.

We saw during COVID lockdowns that most male dominated industries could be largely locked down without deaths increasing, fewer female dominated ones.

It's a bit like the argument men shouldn't have to do the dishwasher and cook dinner because they mow the lawn 6 times a year and clean the gutters twice

Oof! We need a little Trophy reaction button!

Nice post, nice fucking post 👏👏👏

My window cleaners are 2 women. They do it quickly and never leave marks.

Ladamesansmerci · 15/06/2025 19:41

And water is wet. Most nurses are women 🤷

It's not because men can't be good nurses or because women can't be good plumbers. It's to do with how we are socialised (e.g. women being socialised into care roles) and the social stigma of men doing 'women's' jobs. Men doing jobs that are dominated by women are often perceived as gay! A woman who isn't masc presenting would also be very sexualised in a male dominated industry.

I do not believe we are biologically predisposed to certain jobs. Men have a natural advantage for jobs involving heavy lifting, but that's about it. There is nothing to say women couldn't be good at plumbing. It's just several hundred years of history and social stigma tell us those aren't jobs for us, so it wouldn't even be seen as an option for most women.

Well the whole population depends upon having men and women. Still struggling to see the point of this post.

Fluffytoebeanz · 15/06/2025 19:41

I know a female plumber - she's always busy.
