To say that most heavy duty physical labour is done by men? When was the last time a female plumber, builder, roofer, painter and decorator, drain unblocker, or boiler or washing machine engineer came to your house?

Wel yes... generally jobs which involve physical labour are done by men and caring jobs are done by women...this doesn't mean that there aren't women doing labouring jobs or men working in nurseries...but overall yes.

I remember sitting in traffic once and a guy was unloading scaffolding poles from a truck with ease...it struck me that for me as an average woman to have that physical strength would take such a huge amount of exercise, weight lifting and work...so of course, it makes more sense that a man would do that

YourAmplePlumPoster · 15/06/2025 19:09

Can you do without these men? You can try it out and see.

Yes.

I just don't want to.

None of your examples require a lot of physical strength either - most delivery guys are unable to deliver a washing machine by themselves anyway, they need 2 people.

Just because we are women doesn't mean we have to do these jobs.

Why aren't there more men being office admin or private cleaners?

When was the last time you had a female roofer, painter and decorator, someone to unblock the drains, the boiler engineer, the plumber, the window cleaner who attended you? Me. NEVER.

Unblocking a drain depending on the severity is not hard as well as some plumbing issues, both I have taken care of on my own whereas DH would have rather spent the money and waited for a plumber.

I have a female window cleaner and met with a female decorator for our home.

Well, yes, men are over represented in heavy manual work, that's a matter of fact, not opinion, so not really an issue for debate. If you mean why are they, it's a combination of physical strength and stereotypes about man's work that gatekeeps them from women. The jobs you list are not all heavy manual work though. So as women are underrepresented in trades, whether heavy or not, it's the stereotypes rather than physicality that's behind it.

Thats maybe because women don't want to do this kind of work. We all know that we can't beat men when it comes to sports as Navratilova said so why do we think we have the strength to clambour about on roofs or climb into sewage drains?

I’ve done quite a few of those things without men, I’m also a dab hand at anything requiring demolition! Can’t do plastering to save my life though, that’s an art. Are you feeling used or useless @YourAmplePlumPoster?

northernballer · 15/06/2025 19:13

I have a female plumber- she's excellent. Happy to PM a recommendation for anyone Midlands based, I've employed her domestically and commercially.

Really not sure of the point of this thread?!

Comedycook · 15/06/2025 19:13

For typical male jobs which don't need huge amounts of strength like electrician, painter and decorator etc...i think a lot of women are put off by those jobs which involve you entering random people's homes as it's often a safety risk

Needmorelego · 15/06/2025 19:14

Oh I've just remembered...I also know a female engineer. Not sure of her job entirely but it involves big equipment 😁

LolaLouise · 15/06/2025 19:14

Ive had 3 lots of "jobs" done recently.

2 rooms wallpapered - by a woman.

1 room had some black mold from over teh winter period in my teens room who didnt ventilate well, the HA sent round someone to clean, seal, and repaint - a woman.

Bathroom refitted, the tiling and flooring done by a woman.

TulipCat · 15/06/2025 19:14

Yes, most tradespeople are men. I don't think anyone is saying we don't need tradesmen though? I don't get the point of the post.

PennywisePoundFoolish · 15/06/2025 19:15

They are male-dominated trades, i do know one woman who is a gas heating engineer. I do wonder if it's quite family influenced, my FIL was a gas heating engineer and DH trained to join in his early twenties.

ghostyslovesheets · 15/06/2025 19:15

I can flat pack, I removed my own decking, I’d love to see a man 9 months pregnant wrangling a toddler - now that’s heavy work not climbing down a hole or up some scaffolding

TomatoSandwiches · 15/06/2025 19:15

My window cleaner is run by a daughter that took over her father's business.

My guttering gets cleaned by a team of 2 women.

The paddles in my washing machine need replacing and I managed to find a well regarded and recommended woman to come on Tuesday.

I myself used to run a small team of people for painting and decorating also doing the jobs myself occasionally with a mixed team.

The company I used to fit our integrated blind windows was a husband and wife team... she was much more knowledgeable and responsive.

All but one of these jobs was done in the last 2 yrs.

I now actively look out for women that provide these services, They are more reliable, don't overcharge and don't leave shit all over my toilet and clean up after themselves.
I'd rather pay 2 women to do the job of 1 man because frankly most men are disgusting and unprofessional, they don't deserve my custom.

RaininSummer · 15/06/2025 19:17

It's actually seems quite difficult for young women to break into the trades as they don't get the job offers on the whole based on what I see through my job.

I’m an engineer and I have a huge F off drill to prove it- in fact I have 8 drills and not a penis anywhere……

I never have but funnily enough I booked to have my gutters cleaned and windows cleaned, booking all done and I was told they have male and female staff so can't guarantee which it will be. If you'd asked next month I might have been able to say yes I've had my windows cleaned by a woman and my guttering. I'll have to see.

To be fair, though, there's a big market of single women who don't want a random male in their house...

JoshLymanSwagger · 15/06/2025 19:17

Female plumber/gas engineer called here about 10 days ago.

I have female relatives that operate a successful painting and decorating business.

I know of 2 female sparks.

YourAmplePlumPoster · 15/06/2025 19:18

Maybe men should go on strike for a week and if you need any of these jobs done they won't get done. Seriously. This is all because women simply don't want to do these jobs that involve hard physical labour.

Don't be silly. Of course there are plenty of women who would be able to 'clambour' about on roofs or go into sewers. There are women who do trade jobs like decorating and plumbing. I mean... I've never hired a decorator. I always do it myself and I'm <gasp> a woman!

I voted YANBU, because we all know the trades are very heavily male dominated. But that doesn't mean women can't do them.

TheignT · 15/06/2025 19:20

I don't think I'd want a job clearing drains, I have done it myself and that was bad enough. I know I'm a wuss but I was terrified a rat would jump out.

BrickHare · 15/06/2025 19:20

And most people in healthcare that are saving lives are women? What’s your point?

oishutup · 15/06/2025 19:20

Our plumber is female. She’s part of a local plumbing company - have used them for the last three years.

blankittyblank · 15/06/2025 19:20

We have a female plumber
