To say that most heavy duty physical labour is done by men? When was the last time a female plumber, builder, roofer, painter and decorator, drain unblocker, or boiler or washing machine engineer came to your house?

Some of those things ARE NOT Heavy duty

oviraptor21 · 15/06/2025 19:05

Yes but what's your point?
Most child care and nursing care is done by women.
Maybe we should be working harder to overcome these unnecessary gender differences.

JLou08 · 15/06/2025 19:06

Yes it is. Never heard this disputed. What's the point of your post?

Flyhighlittlepigeon · 15/06/2025 19:07

I’ve never heard this disputed. What’s the question?

ghostyslovesheets · 15/06/2025 19:08

Well I do my own painting and decorating

but what’s your point?

Ponderingwindow · 15/06/2025 19:08

How safe is it for women to go alone into random homes for service calls? Is it really a general career field we can encourage more women to pursue without any concerns?

YourAmplePlumPoster · 15/06/2025 19:08

When was the last time you had a female roofer, painter and decorator, someone to unblock the drains, the boiler engineer, the plumber, the window cleaner who attended you? Me. NEVER.

Madthings · 15/06/2025 19:08

They are not all heavy duty, all my decorating in last 7 yrs has been done by women.

I could just as well say all heavy duty and emotionally taxing caring work is done by women.

I know several female plumbers, decorators etc. It's becoming quite s common thing to have specific female handy person groups for those that prefer s female to work in their home.

But yes there is a gender divide in many areas if workforce, maybe look at why that is, which ones are paid better, the attitudes within those trades and socialisation of our children.

5128gap · 15/06/2025 19:08

Well, yes, men are over represented in heavy manual work, that's a matter of fact, not opinion, so not really an issue for debate. If you mean why are they, it's a combination of physical strength and stereotypes about man's work that gatekeeps them from women. The jobs you list are not all heavy manual work though. So as women are underrepresented in trades, whether heavy or not, it's the stereotypes rather than physicality that's behind it.

applegingermint · 15/06/2025 19:08

I’ve had an all female decorating crew in my house for 4 weeks now. They’re brilliant.

phoenixrosehere · 15/06/2025 19:08

Could that be because of what happens when women have tried or gone into those professions? The misogyny and harassment especially sexual harassment aimed at them?

Plus, some you have mentioned plenty of women do as diy and are not particularly heavy duty.

stayathomer · 15/06/2025 19:09

the physical ones aren’t unnecessary though, if a plumber comes I don’t want them struggling to fix/ move something! And actually we need a lot more male nurses

YourAmplePlumPoster · 15/06/2025 19:09

Can you do without these men? You can try it out and see.

dancemom · 15/06/2025 19:09

Majority of social workers are women and go in alone to all sorts of homes.

Allthesnowallthetime · 15/06/2025 19:10

What do you mean by heavy duty? My very petite daughter worked in a care home lifting incapacitated heavy adults for hours a day.

There should have been equipment but there was not

That was heavy duty work, mostly done by women.

persisted · 15/06/2025 19:10

I train engineers. There are always girls on the courses.
You not knowing them doesn't mean they don't exist.

Surroundedbyfools · 15/06/2025 19:10

Altho more women/girls might be taking up trades I would say yeah it’s still very much a male dominated industry, It is what it is ! There are also female dominated industries

ghostyslovesheets · 15/06/2025 19:11

MRA with big testicles apparently

not sure the definition of big balls is posting on MN but all these alphas have to start somewhere I guess

About as safe as female cleaners, social workers and HVs are.

Needmorelego · 15/06/2025 19:11

I know a woman who is a house painter.
My washing machine was delivered and fitted by a male and female together.
Not on your list but I know a female car mechanic, female delivery driver (of heavy items).
