Magic Mike Live - Bride really unhappy

Vickersz · 02/06/2025 05:31

I was given the task of organising my best friend’s hen. I, alongside our other friend, decided on Magic Mike Live. It’s very on theme for a hen and from what I have heard just a very silly dance show which gets people dancing and laughing (not at all seedy).

This will be the end of August. So great weather. We thought we’d go in a little tipsy (after bottomless brunch) and have a laugh as a group of girls (and a couple of gay guys). Finish with a dinner and some dancing. And Bob’s your uncle.

It’s all gone to shit.

Apparently the groom is not happy and thinks it’s a weird choice. He has told the bride he doesn’t want her to go. Everyone’s paid for the non-refundable tickets! There was a bbq last week and it was the main topic of conversation apparently. With all these weird theories as to why it was chosen. It’s not that deep!

My friend often attends bottomless brunch, dances on tables etc. And is no prude.

i genuinely feel ill! It’s being referred to as a strip show! The bride’s step mum and mum will be in attendance.

I really want to walk away from the whole thing.

I spoke to the bride and she is not happy at all

I think the fact the groom has kicked up a fuss has just caused a lot of issues. I had picked tickets not in the thick of the action (cheaper but also for people who may not want to be so directly involved)

At the end of the day 19 women (and a couple
of gay guys) booked non refundable tickets. Clearly they were into it.

Seems weirdly possessive and controlling from
the groom.

well no everyone or this whole thread would not have happened in the first place

This is a shame! It is a fun show and as other have said tame. Great atmosphere - everyone in their seats from what I can remember, I don’t remember standing until the end. Small venue and would be fun for a group on a hen do. Maybe the groom would watch some videos of the show - he will see that it is not a seedy strip club.

Guinessandafire · 02/06/2025 06:02

Those poor theatre staff, having to deal with pissed up hen and birthday parties, coming to see pathetic shows like this.

You do realise that there is no equivalent to this for men? The outrage and disgust would be off the scale, and with good reason.

Trying to justify the whole ' Magic Mike' genre is laughable.

I'm not surprised the groom isn't happy.

Vickersz · 02/06/2025 06:04

I asked people who have been and they all said it’s funnier than it is sexy.

There have been multiple threads on here over the years of women upset that their partner or even BF has gone to strip clubs, yet when it works the other way people should join in?

Have you been to this particular show in London before?

No there isn’t an equivalent show for men but for hundreds of years there has been worse! Strip clubs, prostitution and porn shows.

The men in the show do not get fully naked and there are no individual dances with people in the audience.

MayaPinion · 02/06/2025 06:08

I’ve been to see Magic Mike! It’s a load of clearly gay men running around in their pants. It’s about as sexy as a bag of grated cheese and the bride is safer there than any other part of the Hippodrome, or indeed the whole of London. It’s absolutely not like going to a strip club. It’s a corny, pretty crappy, dance act and there’ll be about 10 other Hen nights there. There is no chance of anyone getting off with any of the actors. They’re just men who would probably rather be on stage dancing with Taylor Swift or jumping through hoops at Cirque.

No one in the hen group chat said anything other than “how fun”. Or words to that effect

"How fun" .... does not sound a positive! Sounds like it was followed by emoji such as 🙄😬🙈....

Divebar2021 · 02/06/2025 06:15

Well I went to Magic Mike in London and I’ve been in strip clubs with women and the two things are poles apart. (pun intended ) Generally women are “ woop woop 🙌 “ and guys are different … more intense. Women certainly aren’t getting private dances and hand jobs in back rooms at Magic Mike. From what I can remember the place was full of hen parties. It’s a bunch of blokes with gym honed bodies who are pretty great dancers who are probably quite arrogant in real life. Not sexy to my mind - all very sterile.
What I would say is strip clubs are a very common “boundary” for posters so if the bride doesnt want to go then fair enough but I think she should have made that clear at the planning process because it’s exceptionally obvious as a possible activity.

orangegato · 02/06/2025 06:16

She’s marrying an insecure weirdo. Sorry.

All other hens should go to the show, and do something else like knitting for her actual hen do then.

People take themselves too seriously, hardly a brothel is it just some blokes with their tops off, hold the front page! Has she never been to the beach? Bet he watches to see where her eyes go if so. Creep.

Well why did they pay for tickets then, if everyone except for the op thought it was a terrible idea?

Next time a women comes on hear crying how insecure they now feel because their husband who went to a stag do went to strippers/pole dancers whatever we can say the same thing to those women?

THisbackwithavengeance · 02/06/2025 06:22

Loving all the hoity toity comments from posters.

It’s Magic Mike. Perfect for hen dos.

Funny how it’s been vetoed by the groom. He’s probably going to Amsterdam to see the Anne Frank house and do a tulips tour. Yeah right

Marmalade71 · 02/06/2025 06:23

I give this marriage 3 years

haha no equivalent for men??

Are you serious? You think pole dancing and strip clubs are acceptable then? Ffs!

EleanorReally · 02/06/2025 06:23

whatever if the bride is unhappy and actually doesnt want to go you will have to get rid of the tickets

MightAsWellBeGretel · 02/06/2025 06:23

ScrewedByFunding · 02/06/2025 05:37

Not at all seedy? I guess it depends where your threshold is. Not my cup of tea at all anx of be gutted if this was my hen.

Yup, it's completely tacky. Perving over shirtless men gyrating is seedy in my book.

Imagine trying to say that men ogling topless women who were just 'talented dancers' wasn't seedy.

The bride has danced on tables! What topless? For a living? Are you telling us she met her fiance as a stripper?

RawBloomers · 02/06/2025 06:25

I get that it’s not the same as strip clubs because women go for the faux outrage as much as for the topless dancing by fit guys. There’s no private dancing, nor any suggestion that women will be masturbating over them or that the next obvious step is a prostitute. But it’s still a matter of ogling men. While there are still some people who think that a stag or hen is about having your last hoorah before you are chained into matrimony and monogamy, times have changed. Fewer people see it that way nowadays and many would be really upset by their partners taking that route. Calling him controlling because he thinks the woman who says she wants to marry him shouldn’t be ogling other men as a main organized activity on her hen is pretty poor on your part.

I think it was poorly judged and you should have checked. There was fairly obvious potential for exactly what has happened. Someone not being a prude and liking dancing on tables doesn’t mean she wants to disrespect her DH2B just before the wedding.

Regardless, you need to change things. You might be able to sell the tickets on. Or maybe you can change the hen night and still use your tickets (but don’t let it dampen the actual hen). You may all just have to suck up the loss.

thismummyslife · 02/06/2025 06:25

Can I just defend the OP for a moment, everyone one of the brides friends who are attending have all bought tickets including her mum and MIL and not one of them has said ‘Oh hold on, I don’t think this is a good idea!’ So that’s point number one!

I’ve just googled the show as I’ve never seen the show or films (lots of people on here haven’t seen the show and are just assuming it’s bad) and it says it’s not rude and it’s more of a theatrical high end production with male dancers with a theme of female empowerment.

I think the hen and her fiancé have both made assumptions without researching what they show is actually about! I’m sure the OP has done a lot more thinking about it and research them both. Talk to the bride and explain what the show is about, tell her to read some reviews then decide! I don’t think you’ve made a terrible misjudgment as it’s an obvious choice for a hendo, but unfortunately the bride just hasn’t been onboard this time! If she still isn’t keen, change it! Explain to the other hens what’s happened and pray you can get your money back. It’ll be something you laugh about nearer the wedding! X

Motherearthisbusy · 02/06/2025 06:26

Magic Mike is a brilliant choice! I want to go now and don’t even have the excuse of a hen doo!

It’s annoying that you can’t refund the tickets. Maybe try and sell them on Facebook marketplace or something as a group booking there will be loads of women with a sense of fun that will snap them up!

What a shame though - it would have been so good. Those men are hot!!! Watching them on stage would have been a sight to behold!

To those posters who think it’s some kind of degrading night out - hahahahhahahahahhahahahahahahhahahahaha.

So why does it attract hen dos and groups of women? Why do no heterosexual men feel compelled to go along to this great comedy act?

FreebieHound · 02/06/2025 06:26

Sounds like a fun day out! I'd keep it in the diaries as a general outing and plan something else for the hen.

Where are you going to bottomless brunch that will allow a group of 19, by the way?

MyDeftDuck · 02/06/2025 06:29

Actually, I would bin the responsibility of organising the Hen, go to the Magic Mike event as arranged (tickets paid for and non refundable) minus anyone who agrees with the precious, coercive, controlling, groom.
Then let someone else organise an alternative event for the Hen - but do check with the groom although I hear that the National Trust do a lovely afternoon tea at some of their locations.
