To ask if those of us who enjoy a sandwich for lunch are a dying breed

Lunchtime in the office, I'm the only one tucking into a sandwich. Everyone else seems to be jabbing away with their fork at something in a Tupperware container.

Are we butty lovers a rarity now?

I used to love sandwiches! Trouble is i had no off switch. So I don't eat bread any more which makes me sad!
Me and sandwiches had to break up: 'It's not you, it's me!'

😂

Howspieduh · 24/05/2025 22:52

Yeah, I find I'm in the minority eating a sandwich at work too, whilst others are warming stuff in the microwave. I've never liked hot food at lunch really, unless I'm having a lunch out!

JaneBerlin · 24/05/2025 23:04

This thread has reminded me of the long forgotten delight of a banana butty. I'm having one tomorrow!

Toast for breakfast. Sandwich for lunch. Maybe something with garlic bread at dinner.

Choosechoclate · 24/05/2025 23:23

Well, from what I’ve seen, the sandwich generation are a dying breed, yes, because you can’t work on that sort of fuel in later life.

If they’re not retiring early, they’re having those sarnies alongside blood pressure tablets etc…

Dillydollydingdong · 24/05/2025 23:26

Look at all the sandwich shops! Do you honestly think they'd bother if they didn't make a profit? Greggs, Subway, M&S, Tesco, the list goes on!

Calliopespa · 24/05/2025 23:26

SlaveToMyFanny · 24/05/2025 10:31

Oh, what do you have? I need ideas for my lovely new stainless steel lunchbox.

Do you mind posting a pic of your new lunchbox?

I don’t know why you’re calling eating normally with cutlery (or at least a fork) “jabbing away” - or repeating this rather irritating phrase for something so normal in your update?

I didn't know an innocent word like "jabbing" would cause offence! It describes the repeated attempts to spear different contents of the Tupperwear container - they rarely seems to get enough on the first or second attempt. And as pp said - the chasing around of the salad.

Meanwhile I sit there daintily nibbling away at my sandwich which is always cut into triangles. And I rarely eat the crusts.

Nowt wrong with jabbing - we only get 15 mins for lunch so we need to tuck in!

Honestly, everything and anything can cause offence on here.

I think it’s where the hypersensitive, crabby and paranoid hang out at times.

Sometimes take ham sandwiches and buy a cone of chips from the chippy and put them on my sandwich. Lovely.

PeloMom · 25/05/2025 06:07

Warm lunch is a lot more satisfying than a sandwich most of the time.

I take sandwiches to work. If I eat hot food at lunchtime it makes me feel really sleepy. I obviously associate hot food with the end of the day/bedtime (DH and I often end up eating after 9pm and I'm in bed not long after!)

Whereas I and many other people find sandwiches have that effect.

It always baffles me how they expect people to stay awake during conferences when they give you sandwiches and cake for lunch then you go back to sitting in a semi dark lecture hall. Half the participants are having an afternoon nap, going by the one I went to last week.

CantStayUpLate · 25/05/2025 06:13

Sandwiches every day for me at work, made the night before. I wouldn't know what to put in a tupperware box, we eat all our evening meal, so there aren't leftovers, and it would be a lot more work to make something else from scratch for lunch.

echt · 25/05/2025 06:19

In 40+ working years I never had a sandwich for lunch unless at a conference or other catered lunch. Always brought in my own non-sandwich lunch.

Like other PPs I found sandwiches made me sleepy.

Projectme · 25/05/2025 06:21

Love a sandwich!!! Shove a load of cheese and onion crisps in there too! 😋

For the purpose of my research, I am putting sandwiches and wraps together.

And I know there are lots of carb dodgers but the ones jabbing away with their fork are often consuming rice or pasta.

i agree,
they are not dodging carbs, they are eating pasta
i spent a long time having salads for work
but now have sandwiches
and even if i make soup i take a piece of bread

Mumtobabyhavoc · 25/05/2025 06:41

I had sprouted grain bread with cheddar on one side, Swiss on the other and left-over rotisserie chicken in the middle. Popped it in the microwave on medium power to heat and IT WAS AMAZING!!!! 😋

Caspianberg · 25/05/2025 06:49

Sometimes have a sandwich. We have very good local bakery bread. Usually have Rye or Eiweiss bread or a similar Roll. Often if we have picnic out somewhere.

Otherwise we eat Lunch at home nowadays for work. No office commute. So can eat anything.

When I used to go out to work I would often make something Sunday evening like roast various veg couscous or with a pesto pasta, depending on what we had in and needed to use up. Then Monday and Tuesday dh and I would just put something salady in one part ( leaves/ beetroot/ tomato/ etc), add some ready made couscous/ pasta, add falafel/ leftover chicken/ chickpeas/ feta or similar. Seeds. A dressing in side pot.
Wednesday maybe a soup - homemade from freezer or fresh type from supermarket, with a roll. Thursday a rye bread type sandwich or roll with Greek yogurt/ nuts/ fruit in pot. Friday buy something hot out.

Whoknowshere · 25/05/2025 06:55

Sandwiches with the cheap white bread are not healthy. Add crisps and it is terrible. People have so much more choices now, noddles, rice, pasta salads etc etc, way healthier and way less processed. Still they give them to kids, which is disgraceful, but hopefully this will stop soon too.

XxSideshowAuntSallyx · 25/05/2025 07:07

I have sandwiches, if it's cold and I'm at home I'll have soup (the microwaves at work are on a different floor and walking upstairs with a hot bowl of soup isn't practical) with a roll. I'll also do a normal salad (no pasta) with either feta, or a southern fried chicken breast in the summer.

Not a fan of pasta (especially cold) or rice and pulses (except quinoa), and don't like anything too big at lunchtime.

NattyTurtle59 · 25/05/2025 07:24

I have definitely taken on the fear of bread as a modern evil. I see it as 'bad' food. Which is illogical because, when you look at the nutritional info, it's not high in calories and it's low fat. Plus it has been the staple food of Britain for millenia. So it's pretty stupid to be scared of it. But I am.

Funnily enough posters are always banging on about how people weren't obese/overweight decades ago - and yet what were they eating for lunch? Sandwiches!

GoldLash · 25/05/2025 07:30

I have a bread maker so I love a tuna or bacon or chicken sandwich on freshly made bread.

sarah419 · 25/05/2025 07:39

bread causes cancer too.

EleanorReally · 25/05/2025 07:41

i never have white bread sandwiches @Whoknowshere

AhBiscuits · 25/05/2025 07:42

I think bread is worse now than it used to be with all the crap that put in it. It makes me bloated and windy.
I make my own sourdough. It literally contains flour, salt and water. It tastes amazing but isn't great for the waistline because it's hard to resist a thick, warm slice with butter fresh out of the oven.

Zanatdy · 25/05/2025 07:43

I’m a Tupperware jabber too. I make a harissa chicken and spinach pasta on a Sunday, and that does my lunches (make another batch on a Wednesday evening). I have it with salad. Less calories than a sandwich and crisps (carefully measured portion as on a diet). I like to eat more at lunch, and less in the evening. Most people in our office are Tupperware jabbers, some lovely looking food in our fridge!
