To ask if those of us who enjoy a sandwich for lunch are a dying breed

Lunchtime in the office, I'm the only one tucking into a sandwich. Everyone else seems to be jabbing away with their fork at something in a Tupperware container.

Are we butty lovers a rarity now?

Yep! Carb avoiders

i think bread is viewed as ‘cake’ these days!

MignonsMorceaux · 24/05/2025 10:25

If I'm working from home I'll usually have a sandwich. If I'm in the office it's a chance to get sormething different, or I might bring leftovers!

I do bring sandwiches to the office but it's pretty rare.
For some reason I hate actually making them the night before for a packed lunch.

Greenlittecat · 24/05/2025 10:25

I've never likes a sandwich but I do like wraps!

AhBiscuits · 24/05/2025 10:25

I see plenty of people eating sandwich meal deals. I like sandwiches but always take soup to work.

curtaintwitcher78 · 24/05/2025 10:26

I hardly ever make a sandwich these days.
I am a sucker for a cheap supermarket cheese and onion sarnie though.
Mostly I'm a tupperware jabber though. I adore cold leftovers.

GreenLeavesEveryday · 24/05/2025 10:27

I used to love sandwiches! Trouble is i had no off switch. So I don't eat bread any more which makes me sad!
Me and sandwiches had to break up: 'It's not you, it's me!'

ProfessionalWhimsicalSkidaddler · 24/05/2025 10:29

I love a sandwich but one doesn’t touch the sides. Same calories I can have the Tupperware tuck in of kings.

For the purpose of my research, I am putting sandwiches and wraps together.

And I know there are lots of carb dodgers but the ones jabbing away with their fork are often consuming rice or pasta.

I rarely have sandwiches and we don't buy bread (hubby and i are both overweight-its lethal). But I have recently found myself craving one. I used to work in a food shop so I would often buy one there. Haven't had sandwich in ages mmm. In the winter I did used to have to take pasta, soup or some such as it used to be freezing cold and a hot meal was needed just to warm myself up.

JaneBerlin · 24/05/2025 10:30

😂

What does that consist of?

It’s odd because I agree that in my office eating a sandwich seems unusual. But yet Pret and M&S are chockablock at lunchtime and while they also sell salads etc they still sell a lot of sandwiches.

So where are the sandwich eaters at lunchtime?? Do they go and hide somewhere with their shameful lunch? I’m out and proud at work but I’m beyond the age of being lunch-shamed.

(I don’t think it’s about avoid carbs, as most non-sandwich eaters are eating pasta or noodles.)

Oh, what do you have? I need ideas for my lovely new stainless steel lunchbox.

NuffSaidSam · 24/05/2025 10:31

When I was a child sandwiches were the only lunch we would ever have. It was unimaginable to not have a sandwich and a packet of crisps for lunch! But I'm not really a sandwich eater now, although I do like something on toast which is essentially an open sandwich so I haven't strayed too far.

Teanbiscuits33 · 24/05/2025 10:32

Well the Tesco meal deal is still as popular as ever so sandwiches are still ‘in’ even though they do all sorts now! But I love a sandwich or a wrap still and so do most people I know. I’m too lazy to make my own though, they’re never as nice either so I always usually go for the Tesco meal deal or a sandwich bar if I do have one.

Springtime97 · 24/05/2025 10:35

I only really eat sandwiches in picnics as it’s convenient. Never really been a fave food for me unless a fancy one. I normally eat left overs for lunch as it’s cheap / quick / balanced!

PomegranateVase · 24/05/2025 10:37

I only eat freshly made sandwiches - literally I make them and eat them straightaway. I can’t stand sandwiches after they’ve been transported anywhere or after they’ve been in a fridge. The thought of it truly turns my stomach. I’m not like it with any other foods.

For the reasons above, I do not take sandwiches to work, and I would take soup or something to eat with a fork instead.

I got instant goosebumps reading stainless steel lunchbox 🥶

kalokagathos · 24/05/2025 10:38

Bread makes me fat so I became a jabber:)

Comedycook · 24/05/2025 10:39

If making myself I don't really do sandwiches as I find loaves of bread are just far too large. Even as a family of four, we hardly ever get through them before they expire. So if I was going to make a bread based lunch, I'd probably choose a brioche roll, bagel or wrap before traditional sliced bread.

Came here to say this.

I think they taste different after a while. Don't ask, I don't understand it either.

I have no issues with leftovers in any other form!

ShowOfHands · 24/05/2025 10:45

Out staff room is full of tupperware and the contents are myriad. Nobody appears to be avoiding carbs. Lots of leftovers, rice, noodles, pasta, fancy salads, grazing stuff. The microwave is in near constant use. I still see sandwiches but never white bread.

I always find the opposite... much prefer a homemade sandwich to a store bought one!

AtLast01 · 24/05/2025 10:47

I always had a sandwich every day for work all my life but now I’m retired there is a bit more choice in my fridge. My teen dc doesn’t like sandwiches at all. I think the younger generation has definitely moved away from the sandwich.

4forksache · 24/05/2025 10:48

Good point. In the words of another mumsnetter on a post a while ago, many youngsters insist on elaborate lunches. True for my dcs !

MyIvyGrows · 24/05/2025 10:48

I love a sandwich but only if they’re freshly made - cold fillings need to be in the fridge but bread should be room temperature - cold soggy bread is a travesty. So I have sandwiches from proper sandwich shops or make them at home. Office lunches are either sandwich shop treats or leftovers or something like salad in a tub.
