To ask if those of us who enjoy a sandwich for lunch are a dying breed

Lunchtime in the office, I'm the only one tucking into a sandwich. Everyone else seems to be jabbing away with their fork at something in a Tupperware container.

Are we butty lovers a rarity now?

Sandwich wouldn’t be my first choice pretty much ever, pasta or a wrap or flatbread is usually my go to

CB2611 · 25/05/2025 07:52

I have to take something to work that needs to be heated before eating. If I take sandwiches or anything ready to eat, I've eaten it by 9am 😂

bread causes cancer too.

You can't just come out with alarmist nonsense like this without at least attempting to back it up with good evidence. Threads like this are a magnet for people with food issues and health anxiety. Don't make matters worse for them.

NatFatPrat · 25/05/2025 08:05

I don’t understand the fascination with a warm up lunch, sarnie or a salad. Some people like to stink the office out with their smelly food like it’s some sort of competition.

Anewdawnanewname · 25/05/2025 08:06

I find sandwiches really boring. I don’t really like eating cold things.

JaneBerlin · 25/05/2025 08:17

You can pop protein inside a sandwich! And salad/veg too. Just like the Tupperware jabbers!

Not as much as a Tupperware though.

I also just don’t like sandwiches that aren’t freshly made.

Onelifeonly · 25/05/2025 09:25

My go-to work lunch is leftovers I can reheat in the microwave. I prefer hot food and it's a lot quicker to put them in a tupperware box than to faff about making sandwiches. Also, other than a baguette, I prefer my bread as toast. So another lunch I have is toast with baked beans / hummus / soup. Often add salad to any of these. Even with a meal deal, I'll usually choose the pasta over a sandwich.

I only make a sandwich for lunch when we are out of all other options. Think I had too many boring ones as a child - filled with tinned fish or corned beef and that put me off! (Though only on holidays, as I had school lunches)

tilypu · 25/05/2025 09:25

I'm not sure why some people see seem to think pasta makes a better lunch than a sandwich, honestly. It's basically the same main ingredients, and more people eat wholemeal bread than eat wholemeal pasta.

I'm surprised so many people seem to need to snack in the afternoon if they have a sandwich for lunch. Maybe, if you would want a sandwich at lunchtime, you need to look at getting better bread and more substantial fillings?

I'm also surprised that people say things like 'i never eat sandwiches but I have wraps/bagels/pitta etc' Reminds me of the man I met years ago that told me he didn't like pasta, but he like spaghetti.

I'll keep making my sandwiches with bread that doesn't make me feel sleepy and fillings that keep me going till dinner time. I suspect that if I was to eat a cheese sandwich on supermarket white bread I would have issues too. (I don't mean that the people that do have issues are eating that, just that I suspect that those would not be great for me at lunch).

Edited

we are constantly being told bread is bad so I think people see pasta as healthier than bread.

I quite often make a cheese ploughman's sandwich with lots of salad in it (I tend to use wholemeal or oat and barley bread). Add a yoghurt and some fruit and that's me done until I get home.

If I were to have a hot meal or pasta I'd be so sleepy.

'Faff about making sandwiches'

Pick up loaf of bread. Extract two slices. Alternatively, pick up roll and slice in half. Spread each slice with butter. Spread mustard on at least one slice. Place slice of decent ham (no added water, outdoor bred) on one slice. Add some lettuce or cucumber if desired. Top with other slice. Slice in half. Place in box. Add at least one piece of fruit, handful of cherry tomatoes. Five minutes absolute tops, no need to queue up for the microwave.

On other days, fill with cheese and chutney, chicken and mayo with some salad, egg and cress, tuna or salmon and cucumber, roast beef and mustard or horseradish with watercress, hummus and roast vegetables, cream cheese and cucumber, etc etc. (I love sliced tomato in a sandwich but only if I can eat it immediately as otherwise it all goes soggy.)

Really no faff involved at all.

AtLast01 · 25/05/2025 10:15

In my 30 years of work I have never once used the microwave at lunchtime or taken in leftovers. Other people do but always a sandwich for me!

JaneBerlin · 25/05/2025 10:24

Get husband or other capable human to make it for you.

Yep! Carb avoiders

i think bread is viewed as ‘cake’ these days!

It may as well be cake. It tastes far too sweet. A nice sourdough will do though 👌

Agree with you there! Just made a sourdough to go with avocado! Yum!

LlynTegid · 25/05/2025 12:05

Definitely second choice for me. One thing I like about only going into the office twice a week is to have a cooked lunch.

Octopusespunchforfun · 25/05/2025 12:08

Ugh don’t, my colleague I sometimes lunch either just has a coffee while I’m sat there ticking into my BLT or whatever. I don’t care though I love a sandwich 😁

JMSA · 25/05/2025 12:28

PomegranateVase · 24/05/2025 10:37

I only eat freshly made sandwiches - literally I make them and eat them straightaway. I can’t stand sandwiches after they’ve been transported anywhere or after they’ve been in a fridge. The thought of it truly turns my stomach. I’m not like it with any other foods.

For the reasons above, I do not take sandwiches to work, and I would take soup or something to eat with a fork instead.

My daughter would say EXACTLY this!

FreezeDriedStrawberries · 25/05/2025 12:35

I know what you mean, come to think of it there's always people at work eating curry or pasta or something, not many people take a sandwich like me!
It does make me regret my choices sometimes though when you smell a curry and think "ok I want some of that!" 😁
Currently reading this eating a corned beef and tomato sandwich ❤️

PomegranateVase · 25/05/2025 13:02

@JMSA

I’m relieved I’m not the only one - everyone I know thinks it’s odd!

Snorlaxo · 25/05/2025 13:07

Leftovers and meal prepped food are my preference to sandwiches. I have the odd week where I go for something in a wrap or pitta bread but as a household we only really eat bread as pizza, burgers or an accompaniment to curry or soup.

Flutterbees · 25/05/2025 13:21

I used to love sandwiches, but bread doesn’t agree with me any more. I’m a soup or salad girl, depending on the weather.

SwedishEdith · 25/05/2025 14:10

Oh, yes, often have a banana and peanut butter sandwich at home. Used to love salt and vinegar Squares on a tuna sandwich as well.

suburburban · 25/05/2025 14:17

We don’t have a microwave at work in our staff room. I could go to another location but it’s a faff

ThinWomansBrain · 25/05/2025 14:24

I don't often eat sandwiches, but I do like the thin bagels that are available from supermarkets now. I keep individual portion pots of Philadelphia in office fridge and take a pack of smoked salmon in.
Also have the luxury of an office with a toaster.😋
