To ask if those of us who enjoy a sandwich for lunch are a dying breed

Lunchtime in the office, I'm the only one tucking into a sandwich. Everyone else seems to be jabbing away with their fork at something in a Tupperware container.

Are we butty lovers a rarity now?

Why not? What is 'heavier' about cooked meals?

I find it fascinating that some people seem to think cooked food is somehow 'too much' when there's nothing about it being hot or cooked that makes it too much/more/heavier than a sandwich and often it's not the case anyway.

I think for me it's just a preference. I'm vegetarian so I eat a lot of carbs and I feel one cooked meal is enough. I prefer a very minimal lunch.

Your comment about the hunger.
When you have your snacks and meals at regular times everyday apparently your body trains itself to send you hunger signals around those times. If you have a large main meal and are full it still doesn't stop those hunger signals. It ensures you eat regular which in turn keeps blood sugar levels on an even keel rather than them spiking and dipping throughout the day.

I have no idea of the validity other than it was something I learnt from my diabetic dietician when I was first diagnosed with an eating disorder a few years back. It's also why one of the first things she had me work on was resetting those body signals by having 3 meals and 3 snacks as part of a balanced diet evenly spaced through my day.

I think that was probably more to do with the eating disorder and resetting hunger signals, if I'm honest.

It's not necessary to eat three meals a day. Many people do but its not necessary and fasting for longer has benefits but it isn't advised for people with a history of eating disorders.

I don’t know why you’re calling eating normally with cutlery (or at least a fork) “jabbing away” - or repeating this rather irritating phrase for something so normal in your update?

I didn't know an innocent word like "jabbing" would cause offence! It describes the repeated attempts to spear different contents of the Tupperwear container - they rarely seems to get enough on the first or second attempt. And as pp said - the chasing around of the salad.

Meanwhile I sit there daintily nibbling away at my sandwich which is always cut into triangles. And I rarely eat the crusts.

Nowt wrong with jabbing - we only get 15 mins for lunch so we need to tuck in!

It's more jabbing than how you'd normally use a fork though, as you are trying to get something from a container rather than from a plate.

I used to get soup & brown bread 3 days a week on my office days. We have a canteen.

But I got totally sick of that after 18mths so I bought a glass lunchbox & small matching glass container a few weeks back & I'll bring my own lunch now.

As I'm preparing dinner i sort out my lunch box & then I leave it in the fridge ready to grab in the morning.

Here's what I had this week, in every case we were eating this for dinner & I just made a bit extra.

Monday- lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber, red onion, cooked Beetroot, chicken breast marinaded in extra virgin olive oil, fresh rosemary, lemon zest & juice cooked on the griddle. In the little tub I had couple of croutons, shaved parmesan & caesar salad dressing

Tuesday: lettuce, tomato, cucumber, Beetroot, red onion, radishes, sliced ham & in the small container a hard boiled egg & dressing

Wednesday: butter chicken curry with mixed peppers, red onion, peas & cauliflower rice & 1 spoon of jasmine rice. 1 small piece of coriander & garlic naan. In small container fresh coriander & chopped salted peanuts to add

Thursday: lettuce, tomato, cucumber, red onion, sliced new potato, steamed & tissed in evoo & salt, red & yellow peppers, radishes, black olives, chicken breast roasted with chilli flakes. Home made French dressing (separate)

Friday: glazed salmon, cold noodle salad with Asian type dressing with green peppers, raw sugar snaps & coriander. Cubes of roast squash on the side

When I work from home I often make homemade soup- roast carrot, spiced butternut squash, minestrone etc

Or we'll have a sandwich- often tinned red salmon, or egg salad, or BLT etc

Because the weather is nice now I'm happy to eat lots of salads but I'll also bring left over dinners like - beef bourguignon, lasagne, pasta etc

You're showing off now!

Not all loaves are equal. I think it's simplistic to reject all bread as they contain predominantly carbs. I get seeded wholemeal bread and the protein content is excellent, plus it has fibre, etc. I often toast a slice or two and eat with chicken, etc. for lunch. I rarely make sandwiches.

ToadRage · 24/05/2025 10:30

I rarely have sandwiches and we don't buy bread (hubby and i are both overweight-its lethal). But I have recently found myself craving one. I used to work in a food shop so I would often buy one there. Haven't had sandwich in ages mmm. In the winter I did used to have to take pasta, soup or some such as it used to be freezing cold and a hot meal was needed just to warm myself up.

Edited

This is me. I stand a chance of having some weight control if we don't have bread in the house.

BurntBroccoli · 24/05/2025 21:15

Comedycook · 24/05/2025 10:39

If making myself I don't really do sandwiches as I find loaves of bread are just far too large. Even as a family of four, we hardly ever get through them before they expire. So if I was going to make a bread based lunch, I'd probably choose a brioche roll, bagel or wrap before traditional sliced bread.

I just freeze the whole loaf and take out what I need per slice. If I make a sandwich for work, I just use the bread frozen then wrap in a sheet of kitchen roll and put in a Tupperware box. Stays really fresh.

Rolercoaster · 24/05/2025 21:44

Most of us are now more aware of sugar spikes, what causes these, and how they affect our health. Sandwiches really isn't a good lunch option, and it will usually only lead to you being hungry and picking in the pm. People tend to look for more protein based lunches now

Emmz1510 · 24/05/2025 21:53

I still love a sandwich. Not a shop bought one though. Prefer to make it myself, on good quality bread. When I’m dieting (which, currently let’s just say I definitely am NOT) I never eat them, but I do love them.

YenSon · 24/05/2025 22:11

I’m mostly disorganised plus have a teenage son who eats anything not locked away, especially if it’s a Tupperware of leftovers. I tend to only have around 10 minutes to eat so I grab anything that is edible to stuff in my work bag. Pitta bread and hummus, banana/pear, cereal bar, bread to toast. My Friday lunch crumpets were mouldy, which I discovered as I was about to out them in the toaster. I had to make do with an emergency cuppa soup, bruised banana and a square of dark chocolate donate by a colleague! Most of my colleagues have a re-heated hot meal or salad

TubeScreamer · 24/05/2025 22:13

I have a sandwich most days for lunch. Quick and easy and no thought needed.

suburburban · 24/05/2025 22:15

I often take a sandwich for work

salad doesn’t fill me up enough and I will snack more in the afternoon

pinkstripeycat · 24/05/2025 22:15

I rarely eat bread these days and it’s helped me to lose weight. I have, on the other hand, been eating protein bagels for brekky, lunch and tea.

Today I wanted bread and bought a seeded baton. I had half for lunch with tuna and half for tea with chicken. Lovely!

Bluebellsparklypant · 24/05/2025 22:17

I love squished down sandwiches and a packet of crisps still, sometimes I even put crisps in my sandwich

Are bagels not bread? They sound good though

Yes,essentially they are but they're boiled briefly then baked which does something to the gluten in the flour and makes them chewy.

Theextraordinaryisintheordinary · 24/05/2025 22:30

Not me. Still love a sarnie, especially with a few crisps in.

Barneysmomma · 24/05/2025 22:35

I usually make tuna mayo & cucumber sandwiches for lunch on work days but I use wholemeal thins rather than bread- not as heavy but very tasty. Probably too many UPFs but I'm lucky if I get to eat undisturbed so it has to be something quick. Had an M&S supergreen salad the other day as a treat which was lovely & I wasn't hungry until dinner.
Also sometimes have jam or lemon cheese in thins but DH says that's just 'cos I'm from Yorkshire!

MarySueSaidBoo · 24/05/2025 22:35

I love bread and love sandwiches even more. Unfortunately since turning 50, my type 2 diabetes doesn't share that love, and I've had to cut out all processed/starchy carbs. So I'm a fork jabber, usually into a protein/salad/veg combo. My current fave is making a feta and red onion tortilla, with a green salad and homemade coleslaw.

healsone · 24/05/2025 22:38

I have a sandwich pretty much every day for lunch. I make them the night before and often eat them out and about with my toddler in a park. I wouldn't want the hassle of bringing back tupperware and a fork, I just wrap them in a sandwich bag and bin it. Generally I have chicken salad or any other meat with salad. I like Pret and M&S sandwiches but they're an occasional treat, we'll get them a few times a year at the station when going on a day trip or to take on a flight.

IwantmyReptv · 24/05/2025 22:46

I have a one slice of bread sandwich, either avocado or cheese & carrot.
I also have wanky homemade cheese and kale muffins.

SoManyDandelions · 24/05/2025 22:47

I take sandwiches to work. If I eat hot food at lunchtime it makes me feel really sleepy. I obviously associate hot food with the end of the day/bedtime (DH and I often end up eating after 9pm and I'm in bed not long after!)
