To ask if those of us who enjoy a sandwich for lunch are a dying breed

Lunchtime in the office, I'm the only one tucking into a sandwich. Everyone else seems to be jabbing away with their fork at something in a Tupperware container.

Are we butty lovers a rarity now?

I still enjoy a sandwich. But wherever I go I see people with tubs the size of a toolbox tucking in.

Is your sandwich box not a toolbox?

Literally just had a spready cheese & spicy cheetos-twists sandwich with the 17yo & DH. Was cracking!

Whataninterestinglookingpotato · 25/05/2025 15:21

When I worked in a hospital I used to take leftovers as I could be sure I would have access to a microwave. Now I’m more community based I generally take a wrap, sandwich or salad depending on what’s in my fridge as can’t always guarantee where I’ll be at lunch time and sometimes have to eat on the go.

Nothing wrong with a good old stodgy white bread sandwich!

I don’t know why you’re calling eating normally with cutlery (or at least a fork) “jabbing away” - or repeating this rather irritating phrase for something so normal in your update?

I didn't know an innocent word like "jabbing" would cause offence! It describes the repeated attempts to spear different contents of the Tupperwear container - they rarely seems to get enough on the first or second attempt. And as pp said - the chasing around of the salad.

Meanwhile I sit there daintily nibbling away at my sandwich which is always cut into triangles. And I rarely eat the crusts.

Nowt wrong with jabbing - we only get 15 mins for lunch so we need to tuck in!

If I only had 15 minutes for lunch I'd be jabbing too! Or just have a sandwich like you, to save microwave time. Only 15 minutes is ridiculous though, I like to eat my main food, then have fruit, then a cup of tea so takes at least half an hour.

Agree it's too short a break.

We do it so we can finish early on a Friday but I'd like longer to eat my butty.

Ah to finish early on a Friday might make it worthwhile. I go in early most days so I can finish early on Fridays and take random days off when I need to.

I have to be careful with lunches. I work in a supermarket so technically I have a plentiful choice if I don't bring my own. Unfortunately we have a Maccys instore and they give us a very generous discount which means we can have a meal and go large for the grand total of £2.59 which is far cheaper than a meal deal, or any other of the ready made lunch type offerings.

Shouldbedoing · 25/05/2025 16:53

I thought of this chat today when I saw a 'poke bowl' amongst the salads and snacks at the supermarket.

AhBiscuits · 25/05/2025 18:06

I love poke bowls. I always get the salmon one from Sainsbury's if I don't bring soup.

HappyDreamer · 25/05/2025 18:08

I do love bringing a sandwich to work, but I will bring leftovers from my tea first if there is any just because it’s easier!x

eldermillenialmum · 25/05/2025 18:12

I do like a nice sandwich but hardly ever have them at work ad I prefer other things and it's nothing to do with the bread

laraitopbanana · 25/05/2025 18:20

long Life to sandwiches!

pollymere · 25/05/2025 18:43

Due to my work patterns, I tend to have lunch at home. I will confess that I'm partial to cooking up a bit of pasta and adding pesto for my lunch and maybe some cheese. I also still like things on toast though. I have a panini maker that will make a toasted sandwich from any bread so I tend to toast my sandwiches.

I still love a baguette, or a bloomer sandwich though. At home is the only place I'll eat egg and cress sandwiches too. I had prawn cocktail sandwiches on Friday. I think they've weirdly become more of a treat than a lunch basic for me as my bread goes stale so quickly. Maybe we're just buying bread that's more artisanal and less Chorleywood so it's only good for sandwiches for about 48 hours?

Dangermoo · 25/05/2025 18:46

Love a cheese or ham and cucumber sandwich on bread seeded bread. Bit of lurpak. Great on my calorie controlled days during the week, giving me fibre.

fetchacloth · 25/05/2025 22:55

I prefer a sandwich at lunchtime, it's quick and easy to make and I get to choose what's in it.
I'm fussy about the bread though, it has to be granary, absolutely no white bread.

I rarely buy sandwiches as it's difficult to get one without mayonnaise.

PeepDeBeaul · 25/05/2025 23:24

A sandwich must made made an eaten within the hour. Any longer and you risk slightly stale bread, the bread absorbing the moisture from the filling or tasting of whatever it was wrapped in...even silver foil leaves the bread a particularly texture. If you make it the night before, the flavours just aren't right, even the morning before is too long ago.

A salad or a microwave meal for me. Neither taste great, but I know they had no hope to begin with...a old sandwich which once would have tasted great, but is now only mediocre is too much of a tragedy for my heart to bear on a daily basis.

restingbitchface30 · 25/05/2025 23:40

This actually causes debates in my house. I’m a sandwich girl. My partner will always cook up something using tons of pans just for lunch. Today he fried tofu, then in another pan made some broth with noodles and in another he will cook veggies. Took him 40 mins and a further 10 washing up. It’s lunch! Grab a bloody sandwich! I find it so weird!

That is truly beautiful 😢

Yep! Carb avoiders

i think bread is viewed as ‘cake’ these days!

Nothing to do with carb avoiding for me, or viewing bread as cake for that matter. Just genuinely don’t like sandwiches - so boring and never satisfy me. A salad is so much nicer, plus being healthier is a good bonus.

celticprincess · 26/05/2025 00:37

Funnily we went on holiday with family recently and stayed in an air b&b. I suggested we did a shop so that we could take a packed lunch with us each day as it would wasting money buying lunch. After 2 days of packed lunches containing sandwich, crisps, biscuit, drink, my niece had a meltdown and said she could t take anymore of this eating xrap. She’d never had so many sandwiches in one week and insisted on a sit down lunch the next day. She’s 13. My kids happily take a packed lunch containing a sandwich every day to school. On a weekend they choose to eat a sandwich for lunch as well. For sandwich read bread or wrap.

I have noticed though that most people don’t take a sandwich type of lunch anymore to work. I even take a ready meal for the microwave but then I’ll possibly have a sandwich for tea when I get home.

Bjorkdidit · 26/05/2025 05:52

Perhaps people have realised that there's a whole world of food other than sandwiches and most of it is more enjoyable, sustaining and can also be healthier and often less effort and cheaper if its mostly leftover dinner you're eating.

I would almost never eat a sandwich by choice so it's a disappointment if circumstances force them on me because it's a meal where I'm not eating the food I want to eat.

Caspianberg · 26/05/2025 08:08

@celticprincess - most people wouldn’t have crisps and biscuits every day as their lunch though.

We take loads of picnics out and about due to cost/ allergies/ cafe availability at some locations. In summer we often eat ‘picnic’ every evening out at local lake.
But we don’t take sandwiches every day. Maybe occasionally. If w erase bread it’s more like a baguette with sides to have simple cheese/ fruit type meal. But most the time would just be cold version of regular meals at home. A protein, Side of carbs, a salad or roast veg, fruit after.

If making myself I don't really do sandwiches as I find loaves of bread are just far too large. Even as a family of four, we hardly ever get through them before they expire. So if I was going to make a bread based lunch, I'd probably choose a brioche roll, bagel or wrap before traditional sliced bread.

I love a sandwich. I buy various delicious types of bread and keep it in the freezer, only taking out what's required each day. That way it's always fresh and there's no waste 👌
