To ask if those of us who enjoy a sandwich for lunch are a dying breed

Lunchtime in the office, I'm the only one tucking into a sandwich. Everyone else seems to be jabbing away with their fork at something in a Tupperware container.

Are we butty lovers a rarity now?

When I worked I used to have soup because I have an issue with my gullet so have to eat quite slow or I'm in agony and the break wasn't quite long enough. Now I'm retired it's sandwiches all the way.

Sunshineandrainbow · 24/05/2025 10:48

I love a sandwich but have it for dinner not lunch.
My children do not eat sandwiches age 21 and 26

bloodredfeaturewall · 24/05/2025 10:50

at home: team sandwich (although I prefer a continental style open sandwich with fried egg on top)
at the office: whatever the cantine has to offer.

TwinklyRoseTurtle · 24/05/2025 10:50

I always have a hot meal at lunchtime - although I work 14 hour shifts and prefer my main meal in the middle of the day

The answer is definitely 'yes', even if you are a Tetris king/queen who can stuff 600 other things in your Tupperware with it, and can still shut the lid.

Also, why do all sandwiches need mayonnaise on them now? I do not like mayonnaise, which rules out 99.9% of shop-bought sandwiches (and I have been laughed at for eating a humble jam sandwich), and the other 0.01% contains poisonous cheese...

analyseyourdaydreams · 24/05/2025 10:51

It's partly carb-avoiders but mostly (through observation at my office) younger people seem to think of sandwiches as boring and old-fashioned! At a push, I think wraps are acceptably modern. Makes me feel ancient as I tuck into my cheese and pickle...

Fedupmumofadultsons · 24/05/2025 10:51

I still love a sandwich. Especially jam with seeds got to be good jam like mrs bridges or such like or lemon curd . It's still my favorite lunch .a standing joke with hubby who the hell drives miles for jam when there is loads of supermarkets near .he will never understand 😆

My absolute pet hate. Stop putting mayo on everything!

I am a soup eater personally because it feels more like a meal (Heinz Big soups do anyway) and home-made sarnies manage to feel damp yet dry at the same time.

TheDandyLion · 24/05/2025 10:54

I think the makers of the meal deal would disagree.

WitchHag · 24/05/2025 10:54

ive got right off Sarnies and I used to love them. But it’s nothing to do with health, carb avoidance and all that.

It’s because the bread has gone bad, pre-packaged sandwich bread is awful! Thick and chewy and tasteless, always one or a combination of those. The butter is……something? I looked at it once, it’s a a sort of almost clear colour lard like paste 😳
And anything with a particle of moisture makes it soggy - tomatoes anyone?

whether it was always the case, and I’ve been spoilt with high quality bread and decent fillings, I’ll still make a sandwich at home, with decent ingredients.

But you’d have to pay me to eat a shop bought one (same for Cornish pasties or pies in plastics wrappers)

TossieFleacake · 24/05/2025 10:54

I love a sandwich.

Honestly, they are basically what's sustained me since my marriage ended last summer.

Thank you ham sandwich.

BingoBling · 24/05/2025 10:55

I like a sandwich. Dd is early 20s likes a sandwich too.
If I had a straightforward salad for lunch I would be starving by 3pm.

GAJLY · 24/05/2025 10:57

I always have a smoked cheese bagel! But sometimes it's easier to grab a box of left overs from the fridge! I currently have lasania and pasta in mine!

fatgirlswims · 24/05/2025 10:58

I love sandwiches but I do regard them now as an indulgent treat! I am what one might called a porker (or former porker thanks to
Mounjaro)

We are a dying breed! My ex SIL declaring she loves sandwiches made my heart sing!

Cheese and pickle or ploughmanS

i do not care for a wrap- too dense and chewy. I need soft pillowy bloomer bread

nothing makes me happier than making a platter of sandwiches for an event. Always using mary
berry’s advice!

Gettingbysomehow · 24/05/2025 11:00

I love a nice big sandwich but they make me very fat and having lost 5 stone I'll be sitting there with my salad and a fork.

Chocolate85 · 24/05/2025 11:00

I love a wrap or sandwich and have them most working days. I don’t like mayo amongst other things so most shop bought ones are ruled out but my home made are lovely.

RedRiverShore5 · 24/05/2025 11:00

OP, maybe they are all MNers, as bread is generally frowned upon on here.

PomegranateVase · 24/05/2025 11:01

@Toiletbrushanswer

I so pleased I’m not the only one!

melsid · 24/05/2025 11:02

Nope not me I love a sandwich 😋😋

Menapausemum1974 · 24/05/2025 11:15

I have developed a gluten intolerance but am now craving some salt and pepper tiger bread 🥴🤦‍♀️ However that can't happen so will have some greek yoghurt, berries and honey. My teenage son however inhales regular bacon sandwiches followed by nutella ones 🤣

JaneBerlin · 24/05/2025 11:17

Glad to read the butty love on this thread ❤️

Never shop bought for me. Mornings ChezBerlin, I put the coffee on whilst DH showers. Then he makes lunch whilst I shower.

He's a carb dodging vegan so bungs stuff in a tub for himself and crafts me a tasty sandwich. He puts an ice pack in my lunch bag so I don't have to put it in the fridge at the office where it will be shamed by the Tupperware brigade 😋

(Missing the point but....) what do you make at home that creates all these leftovers? I never have leftovers of anything? Do you deliberately make extra so e.g cook extra veg so it can be relegated to the leftovers tub?

Yes. If I do a bolognese for 2 of us, I'll use 500g of mince and get 2 large portions and 2 lunch portions. I'll cook a full head of broccoli most evening meals, the rest goes with lunches the next day.

ItGhoul · 24/05/2025 11:23

Oh, I absolutely love a sandwich. A well made sandwich is one of life’s greatest culinary pleasures. Not a rubbish limp bland one but a proper nice fat freshly made one.

anon2022anon · 24/05/2025 11:24

I love a sandwich. Unfortunately, I don't work a job where I can eat them regularly any more, my arse is large and gets bigger very quickly where bread is involved. When I had a job on my feet all day, I'd happily eat them most days.

My Christmas treat to myself is a loaf of Jackson's bread, a tub of lurpak, and sandwiches or toast whenever I fancy until it's gone.
