To ask if those of us who enjoy a sandwich for lunch are a dying breed

Lunchtime in the office, I'm the only one tucking into a sandwich. Everyone else seems to be jabbing away with their fork at something in a Tupperware container.

Are we butty lovers a rarity now?

I’ve never been a huge fan of sandwiches but I love toast and bread generally. I cba with making a sandwich before work (in my defence I leave at 6:30) and they are never as good when they are not eaten straight away. I do love a banana sandwich and sometimes make one at work but I generally microwave leftovers. I prefer hot food to cold generally.

TheBlueUser · 24/05/2025 13:16

I love sandwiches, but I cook for one so always have leftovers and it doesn't make sense for me to then buy the ingredients to make sandwiches as well.

Also agree sandwiches get a lot less appealing after they've been sitting for a few hours!

Mumwithbaggage · 24/05/2025 13:22

I find sandwiches boring - well, at least the ones I would chuck together first thing in the morning - plus bread makes me a bit lethargic and er... gassy. Given I'm a teacher, that's not ideal!

ICantBeDoingWithThat · 24/05/2025 13:25

Just eaten a crispy bacon on buttered white here. Agree that they're always best freshly made. We ration our bread consumption for weight management, but have a treat at weekends.

one2one2 · 24/05/2025 13:26

I am a carb avoider so never have a sandwich. Messes up my glucose levels. Avoiding carbs means I can eat large volumes with no weight gain.

tilypu · 24/05/2025 13:26

I usually take sandwiches to work for lunch. I'm not a huge sandwich lover tbh, they are ok, but they are quick to make, relatively low in calories and, most importantly, quick to eat. My first week at work I took thinks like frittata and salad, but salad takes a while to eat, and I only get thirty minutes for lunch. I could take leftovers to heat up, but again it takes longer because you have to heat it to first. So sandwiches it is.

RanchRat · 24/05/2025 13:27

I recently spent two weeks in hospital, stuffing my face three times a day with full English, lunch and pud, dinner and pud (buckets of custard). Got on the scales when I came home expecting the worst, to see I had lost a stone. The reason dear reader was bread, or the lack thereof. Back away from the loaf.

Namechangefordaughterevasion · 24/05/2025 13:33

My absolute favourite food is sandwiches but because I avoid carbs I don't eat them very often. They are a rare treat.

Most bread is nutritionally devoid. I prefer my food to be more wholesome.
People used to use lard many many years ago, as we educate ourselves our preferences evolve.

'Nutritionally devoid'. What nonsense. Energy, various vitamins and minerals, some protein and fibre.

OldChinaJug · 24/05/2025 13:43

I don't eat sandwiches at lunchtime and haven't done since I left school. I can barely keep my eyes open in the afternoon if I do.

I take leftovers, soup or salad and something. I rarely eat bread unless I'm planning an afternoon nap! 😁

CrushingOnRubies · 24/05/2025 13:46

i usually have a sandwich for lunch at work but only as it’s quick and easy to make . If I can I’ll take in left overs or make a pasta salad. If I’m buying lunch out I’ll never have a sandwich

spoonbillstretford · 24/05/2025 13:49

Find sandwiches a bit boring and generally I prefer the filling to the bread. I don't mind an open sandwich though, Scandi style, so you can get more on!

I don't do very low carb, but low-ish. So sometimes I won't have a starchy carb element at lunch time. On the other hand if it's the first thing I've eaten then I probably will.

The thought of eating cold or re-heated leftovers doesn't appeal.

Also, in my head, bolognese, stew, brocoli are to be eaten at tea time not lunch.

I sometimes have homemade soup when wfh but without bread it seems lacking.

I’m exactly the same! I’m generally home in time for lunch and it’s almost always a sandwich, usually ham, banana or bacon. If I’m feeling posh I’ll have a sandwich filling from the supermarket. Non sandwich days are crackers and cheese.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 24/05/2025 13:54

I'd bloody love to have a sandwich, but I'm now gluten intolerant and gluten-free bread is shit.

Catsandcannedbeans · 24/05/2025 13:54

Cannot beat a good sandwich for lunch! Has to be a proper one tho, meat, cheese, salad, pickle. Preferably leftover chicken or ham from a ham hock. I also love a wrap, but if I’m having a wrap it has to be two or I will be hangry by half one. I have always had a strong preference for things I can eat with my hands tho.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 24/05/2025 13:57

Having said I'd love to be able to have a sandwich, I wouldn't want to every day. I love taking homemade soup or a salad. Leftovers are great too - I'm always baffled by people who turn their noses up at them! Lots of things like soup and stew taste better the day after you make them.

Lourdes12 · 24/05/2025 14:00

I like German rye bread sandwich or crisp bread with sandwich toppings. Supermarket bread is low in nutrients and full of calories

Yupal · 24/05/2025 14:02

im a leftovers fan, I never feel filled up from a sandwich and it just always feels a bit lacking to me, no matter how full I stuff it.

Wonderwall23 · 24/05/2025 14:05

I have a basic sandwich every single day for lunch. I love them, especially with bakery bread. Nothing like leftovers, soup or salad appeals to me. But not worried what others do.

I'm underweight and a no carb rule would suck the joy out of food/life for me.

SpidersAreShitheads · 24/05/2025 14:09

I love bread, especially fresh white bread, thickly sliced. Absolutely delicious.

But I’m trying to lose weight and cutting carbs is the only thing that works. I never realised how much carbs made me retain water until I went on keto.

Crinkle77 · 24/05/2025 14:10

I do a mix of both. Sometimes I'll take leftovers, soup or jacket potato. Other times I'll take butties. Just depends what I've got in the fridge and if i can't be bothered or not organised enough to have leftovers I'll do butties cos they're easy.

PrettyPuss · 24/05/2025 14:11

I always feel a bit old fashioned with my cheese sandwich but I like being old fashioned.

This thread is genuinely eye opening for me - I had no idea so many people liked sandwiches! For me, and I guess I just assumed most people felt the same, they’re eaten purely for convenience in a packed lunch. Like, not awful, but would never be first choice. The act of eating them just seems to take so much effort, and I’d never look forward to a sandwich, they’re just something easy to transport. I have never taken one to the office in 20 years of work, picnics on days out with the kids only. I’m honestly surprised by everyone’s replies here!

I am also surprised but in the exact opposite way to you - I had no idea bread was so universally hated & avoided by so many people
And that sandwiches are also so unpopular. I know at my work fewer people bring them in these days, but the shops are so full of meal deals involving sandwiches that I thought they were generally still quite popular

VoluptuaSneezelips · 24/05/2025 14:13

I think it's more to do with saving money, I bet a few of the sarnie forsaker's are snacking on last nights pasta or rice leftovers. Have you seen how expensive sarnie fillings are getting though - corned beef in a tin im especially looking at you mate. RIP my beloved Corned Beef, Branston & Pickled Onion sarnies.
