To ask if those of us who enjoy a sandwich for lunch are a dying breed

Lunchtime in the office, I'm the only one tucking into a sandwich. Everyone else seems to be jabbing away with their fork at something in a Tupperware container.

Are we butty lovers a rarity now?

I occasionally take a sandwich to work for lunch. Other people at work often have sandwiches at morning break, at lunch its always something hot and dinner-like.

CoubousAndTourmalet · 24/05/2025 14:18

We have sandwiches or toast for lunch every day (work from home). Leftovers in our house are reheated for evening meal not lunch. We're veggies so we have a carb heavy diet - lots of potatoes, pasta and bread.

SquadGoals75 · 24/05/2025 14:18

Those of you having salads for lunch….. aren’t you starving half an hour later? I would be. Also, a salad would take me forever to make…. all that chopping

This thread is genuinely eye opening for me - I had no idea so many people liked sandwiches! For me, and I guess I just assumed most people felt the same, they’re eaten purely for convenience in a packed lunch. Like, not awful, but would never be first choice. The act of eating them just seems to take so much effort, and I’d never look forward to a sandwich, they’re just something easy to transport. I have never taken one to the office in 20 years of work, picnics on days out with the kids only. I’m honestly surprised by everyone’s replies here!

Fair enough if you don’t like sandwiches though I’m not sure why they’re more effort to eat than other lunch options but, assuming that you’re in the UK, how have you managed to miss the plethora of sandwiches available in the meal deal section of supermarkets? Also you haven’t seen cafe and pub/restaurant lunch menus?! Or specialist sandwich shops? There’s plenty of sandwiches around so someone is eating them.

When I have a salad its about 50% feta or mozzarella which makes it more filling, and then I have a pizza muffin with it. Always have some fruit too.
But I'm always hungry by afternoon tea break whatever I eat, so I have cake or yoghurt then.

justasking111 · 24/05/2025 14:26

I'm a jabber during the week unless it's cold then I have soup. At the weekend it's a BLT in a bap though.

Bjorkdidit · 24/05/2025 14:31

I don't eat cold food if I can help it so obviously not sandwiches, which to me are really dull, unsatisfying but calorie dense compared with 'proper meals' made of meat, vegetables, pulses etc.

Most of my lunches are leftover dinner or if at home I might have an omelette.

ZiggyZowie · 24/05/2025 14:34

Love a sandwich.
Asda do a 10 seeds small wholemeal loaf
and I love cheese and cucumber on it .
A lot cheaper than shop bought .

AtLast01 · 24/05/2025 14:35

I could only have soup if there was a sandwich to go with it. It’s not filling enough!

No because I whack a load of protein with it.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 24/05/2025 14:39

I would only really eat a sandwich if I was going to be on a train or otherwise eating on the go and somewhere I wouldn’t have access to a microwave/ fridge/ cutlery and/ or if I needed to be able to bin the packaging cos I didn’t want to carry it around with me. I also find it’s hard to make a sandwich nutritious, you just can’t get that much veg into a sandwich compared to a salad, curry, soup etc.

HangingOver · 24/05/2025 14:40

OP, one of mine and DPs favourite dinners goes like this:

Sliced tofu, coated in pesto, air fried
Smoked hummus
Half a roast pepper
Tapinade
Avo and tomato

In half an olive ciabatta.

With jersey royals and leeks on the side. GLORIOUS.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 24/05/2025 14:43

I’m on a train now and ate a sandwich. I took home made wholemeal and rye, containing a couple of thin slices of Comte and leftover fried peppers and mushrooms from yesterday’s dinner. Delicious and healthy and very filling, although not mad in calories. The bread was dense but the slices not large.

Your comment about the hunger.
When you have your snacks and meals at regular times everyday apparently your body trains itself to send you hunger signals around those times. If you have a large main meal and are full it still doesn't stop those hunger signals. It ensures you eat regular which in turn keeps blood sugar levels on an even keel rather than them spiking and dipping throughout the day.

I have no idea of the validity other than it was something I learnt from my diabetic dietician when I was first diagnosed with an eating disorder a few years back. It's also why one of the first things she had me work on was resetting those body signals by having 3 meals and 3 snacks as part of a balanced diet evenly spaced through my day.

dannyufcfan · 24/05/2025 14:50

More like,....a dying bread.

(i'll get my coat)

Most bread is nutritionally devoid. I prefer my food to be more wholesome.
People used to use lard many many years ago, as we educate ourselves our preferences evolve.

See I like my food being nutritionally devoid and I also like lard.

SP2024 · 24/05/2025 14:58

See I’m always eating sandwiches because I can’t think what else to have that’s quick? Need some inspiration as definitely look like I’m eating too many carbs!

Weirdly snippy language OP. They are not "jabbing away with their fork" any more than you are sucking on your little sandwich.

Don't be a sillybilly. It's a good natured thread. A rare thing on MN.

I eat sandwiches nearly every lunch. I tried salads but they would always leave me starving.

Aside from the eating disorder, eating so regularly means your body does not get to experience autophagy which speeds up ageing, increasing longevity and decreasing cancer risk.

This is what i come to MN for - unwarranted outrage perfectly expressed.

Bluevelvetsofa · 24/05/2025 15:09

I used to take a lunchbox with either tuna, chopped up ham or chicken or cheese, salad of whatever was in the house, followed by fruit and yoghurt.

FiveWhatByFiveWhat · 24/05/2025 15:20

I've had the same sandwich for lunch most days for about 30 years and have only recently come to realise that maybe that's a bit odd 🤣

Applenation · 24/05/2025 15:53

My DC rarely eat sandwiches for lunch. One makes a bowl of smoothie/yoghurt/oats/nuts or a bean-based salad, the other prefers toast, and the youngest both have a bowl of pasta Grin
Tbf, me and DH hardly eat sandwiches either. I bake bread most days, but it's never used for sandwiches. Everyone loves toast though!

'Nutritionally devoid'. What nonsense. Energy, various vitamins and minerals, some protein and fibre.

Industrial bread production means too many preservatives, additives and salt, making it unhealthy. Unless you're making your own.
