To ask if those of us who enjoy a sandwich for lunch are a dying breed

Lunchtime in the office, I'm the only one tucking into a sandwich. Everyone else seems to be jabbing away with their fork at something in a Tupperware container.

Are we butty lovers a rarity now?

I suspect sandwiches are more “on the go” thing. If people can heat up in a microwave, sit in the office for their lunch then they do leftovers. It’s quicker to put some of your yesterday stew in a Tupperware box rather than to do a sandwich.

We do sandwiches still but we bake our own bread so maybe that’s why - feels a bit healthier.

Dc have bagels or wraps in their packed lunch - there isn't much else they can take that doesn't involve lots of effort for me. I either take leftovers or make a sandwich for myself. Said is not filling enough and often takes more time to prepare.

henlake7 · 24/05/2025 11:42

Peanut butter and jam sandwiches here (made with defrosted bread).
My lunches are depressing to match my job!

MasterBeth · 24/05/2025 11:48

I make myself a sandwich most mornings. Just feels the easiest, most obvious lunchy thing. I am 56 years old.

The thought of eating cold or re-heated leftovers doesn't appeal.

Also, in my head, bolognese, stew, brocoli are to be eaten at tea time not lunch.

I sometimes have homemade soup when wfh but without bread it seems lacking.

Oh, what do you have? I need ideas for my lovely new stainless steel lunchbox.

Stainless steel! Wow!

some form of seasoned chicken and salad mostly (fun I know)
however, a great one is a little like a cottage pie. Minced beef onion and gravy cooked normally and then placed in a Pyrex dish. Mash cauliflower and broccoli on top in place of mash and a thin layer of cheese on top. Place in oven for 15/20 mins. We’ve done the same with curried chicken but you have to use a lot of chicken.

I no longer work 😁but for the later few years I switched to mainly salads and soups. Before then I mostly had sandwiches, however I frequently found that by home time I was a bit shaky and "duthery". It felt like low blood sugar or something. I used to have a mile and a bit to walk home so often ended up buying a Twix or something to give me a boost.

Then I started taking the salads, primarily as a way to lose a bit of weight. I was surprised to find that after a salad lunch I never got the shakiness later on. If for any reason I had not taken a salad and bought a sandwich again then the sensation often returned.

I think I read an explanation once which I have half forgotten, something to do with the bread causing an energy crash or something?

Anyway it worked better for me.

the80sweregreat · 24/05/2025 11:57

Certain bread doesn’t agree with me , but I often crave white Tiger bread that’s fresh with a nice filling
I used to eat a lot of sandwiches, but not so much lately.

Yep! Carb avoiders

i think bread is viewed as ‘cake’ these days!

Great! I bloody love cake and bread.

tobee · 24/05/2025 11:59

They can take my sandwich out of my cold dead hand!

Rewis · 24/05/2025 12:00

I feel like making a filling sandwich is a lot of work compared to throwing in last night's leftovers in a container.

DinoLil · 24/05/2025 12:01

I love, love a sandwich! Cheese and cucumber left in a locker so it goes a bit hot and melty and squishy by lunchtime is my ultimate favourite. White bread of course. And yes, I am reminiscing to school days and my first job!

I'm trying to do the keto thing because I'm fat and, because I bought a tiger loaf two weeks ago and ate the whole thing in 48hrs making cheese toastie after cheese toastie.

@JaneBerlinYou are not unreasonable to love a sarnie!!

PraisebetoGod · 24/05/2025 12:02

I've noticed this at work too!

Nextdoormat · 24/05/2025 12:03

Sandwiches and toast are my favourite foods, but I don't eat them much as the crisps are a side with a sandwich and I am trying to lose weight. I do think it's a dying meal😕

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 24/05/2025 12:07

I love a sandwich. I've just finished a turkey and lettuce cob for my lunch.

MoominMai · 24/05/2025 12:10

Toiletbrushanswer · 24/05/2025 10:42

Came here to say this.

I think they taste different after a while. Don't ask, I don't understand it either.

I have no issues with leftovers in any other form!

Ooh I found my people 😅.

Im like this too. It started when I bought a lovely Greggs tuna baguette which surprisingly is pretty good for calories. Anyway, bread was lovely and crunchy and soft in middle and just yum. Texture is important to me.

A few weeks later, I treated myself again to another and it was a totally different experience. It was soggy in the bottom and the previously soft inside bit was now mushy and made me gag at the thought of eating it.

So now, I never but sandwiches or baguettes as you never know how fresh they really are and whether the inside will be mush or not bleurgh!

Always make my own if I fancy them from fresh. I won’t even make them overnight for a work lunch!

I only eat freshly made sandwiches - literally I make them and eat them straightaway. I can’t stand sandwiches after they’ve been transported anywhere or after they’ve been in a fridge. The thought of it truly turns my stomach. I’m not like it with any other foods.

For the reasons above, I do not take sandwiches to work, and I would take soup or something to eat with a fork instead.

Yes! A packed sandwich makes me want to vomit.

TicTac80 · 24/05/2025 12:13

I'm 44 and do love a decent sarnie. I'm fussy on the type of bread and the filling though. My lunchbox - I just treated myself to a new bento box style one from amazon for a tenner - normally contains picky bits. Main compartment is a mixed salad (normally with some leftover grilled chicken or meat, hummus and pitta), smaller compartments have seeds, fruit/veg and things like that. It's a nice way for me to eat a variety of things and keep my protein/fibre intake up, whilst I'm on a 13hr shift. Sound stupid but it makes me less likely to reach for the chocolates, cookies and so on that are often at work. In the winter, I will bring a tupperware with some soup in it.

At home, or on picnics, I'll happily have a sandwich but I look at it as more of a treat thing. My 18yr DS loves sandwiches: his fav is cheese and jam! DD likes Marmite sandwiches.

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 24/05/2025 12:16

My kids all love a sandwich.

I do enjoy a sandwich but it needs to be fresh with good quality bread. DH makes an amazing sarnie but it's got about 2 days worth of calories in it so it's a treat food.

Lunch for me these days tends to be eggs as I need filling but light food otherwise I want to sleep through my afternoon.

If I'm out and about for work I'll pick up a meal deal or go to somewhere like Wasabi for their Korean chicken and rice.

miniaturepixieonacid · 24/05/2025 12:18

I have definitely taken on the fear of bread as a modern evil. I see it as 'bad' food. Which is illogical because, when you look at the nutritional info, it's not high in calories and it's low fat. Plus it has been the staple food of Britain for millenia. So it's pretty stupid to be scared of it. But I am.

I also have a near phobia of condiments, especially mayonnaise so buying a sandwich out is almost impossible. I do live Tesco Just Ham no mayo white bread sandwiches but they are a binge food for me, not a lunch.

I get lunch free from work. I'm very 'difficult' with food though so tend to have the same every day - hard boiled eggs and 'salad' (my unexciting version of salad - luckily I work in a school so all the salad ingredients are separated into separate bowls for fussy kids and me! ) .

glittereyelash · 24/05/2025 12:21

I definitely love a sandwich but I like to have a bit of variety so il change it up each day. Il do a sandwich/wrap/pitta/bagel , soup and brown bread, a salad, crustless quiche, Baked potatoe and side, a mini ploughman's, sushi, noodles, pasta salad. I just love all food no discrimination here 😋

feelingbleh · 24/05/2025 12:25

I love a sandwich but don't have bread very often because I don't find it filling and makes me fact. Iv just had omelette and salad for lunch although the sandwich might of been a lot less fattening with the amount of cheese I put in it 🤣🤣

NewShoesForSpring · 24/05/2025 12:25

I used to get soup & brown bread 3 days a week on my office days. We have a canteen.

But I got totally sick of that after 18mths so I bought a glass lunchbox & small matching glass container a few weeks back & I'll bring my own lunch now.

As I'm preparing dinner i sort out my lunch box & then I leave it in the fridge ready to grab in the morning.

Here's what I had this week, in every case we were eating this for dinner & I just made a bit extra.

Monday- lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber, red onion, cooked Beetroot, chicken breast marinaded in extra virgin olive oil, fresh rosemary, lemon zest & juice cooked on the griddle. In the little tub I had couple of croutons, shaved parmesan & caesar salad dressing

Tuesday: lettuce, tomato, cucumber, Beetroot, red onion, radishes, sliced ham & in the small container a hard boiled egg & dressing

Wednesday: butter chicken curry with mixed peppers, red onion, peas & cauliflower rice & 1 spoon of jasmine rice. 1 small piece of coriander & garlic naan. In small container fresh coriander & chopped salted peanuts to add

Thursday: lettuce, tomato, cucumber, red onion, sliced new potato, steamed & tissed in evoo & salt, red & yellow peppers, radishes, black olives, chicken breast roasted with chilli flakes. Home made French dressing (separate)

Friday: glazed salmon, cold noodle salad with Asian type dressing with green peppers, raw sugar snaps & coriander. Cubes of roast squash on the side

When I work from home I often make homemade soup- roast carrot, spiced butternut squash, minestrone etc

Or we'll have a sandwich- often tinned red salmon, or egg salad, or BLT etc

Because the weather is nice now I'm happy to eat lots of salads but I'll also bring left over dinners like - beef bourguignon, lasagne, pasta etc

If I can’t make a big pot of something at the weekend to have for lunches during the week, I have a cheese and pickle sandwich. It’s just so much easier to put together in the morning than faffing with salads. Can’t be doing with wraps as they fall apart.
