To ask if those of us who enjoy a sandwich for lunch are a dying breed

Lunchtime in the office, I'm the only one tucking into a sandwich. Everyone else seems to be jabbing away with their fork at something in a Tupperware container.

Are we butty lovers a rarity now?

Personally sandwiches just dont fill me up. I tend to have a salad with loads of veggies, some fats like avocado and pine nuts and a load of protein. I dont get hungry mid afternoon then - I always do with sandwiches even if I have a protein heavy filling

Orangesinthebag · 24/05/2025 12:29

Sandwiches, thins or wraps all the way for me - simple to make and quick & easy to eat.
I am in the minority where I work though, more & more elaborate lunches are appearing, some of which take a while to construct. I just can't be faffed with that!

And I never want to eat leftovers the next day.

My only gripe is when people have excessively smelly cooked lunches e.g something fishy - in a busy workplace I think that's quite selfish.
It happens quite often though & the smell lingers...🤮

I love sandwiches. I eat one every day for lunch. In fact I’m eating one right now!

leftovers don’t appeal to me at all as a lunch choice. Not that we ever have any leftovers mind you!

pinkfloralcurtains · 24/05/2025 12:32

I have no particular opinion about bread but sandwiches don’t fill me up the same way a salad with beans and meat or dinner leftovers do. I’m more likely to be raiding the office snack bar come 4pm after sandwiches for lunch. I don’t think I’m unusual so I guess that’s why people eat other things.

AhBiscuits · 24/05/2025 12:33

I find a hot meal more satisfying.
I always have a chunk of my homemade sourdough with my soup, so definitely no bread avoidance here. I've found my digestive system is much happier since I gave up processed bread.
I blame UPF avoidance for sandwich decline.

Well the Tesco meal deal is still as popular as ever so sandwiches are still ‘in’ even though they do all sorts now! But I love a sandwich or a wrap still and so do most people I know. I’m too lazy to make my own though, they’re never as nice either so I always usually go for the Tesco meal deal or a sandwich bar if I do have one.

Edited

I occasionally get a tesco meal deal if I'm in the office. They have started doing small cartons of covent garden soup as the snack bit, so ill get a tomato soup, pepsi max and a cheese triple sandwich to dip in the soup 😋

CharlotteStreetW1 · 24/05/2025 12:34

I make a sandwich for DH and me for lunch most days because I struggle enough thinking what to make for dinner - I'm not wasting precious brain cells getting creative over lunch as well. If DH doesn't like it, he can sort his own lunch.

My office mates are Tupperware jabbers and are very virtuous eaters (much talk of protein) until someone brings in cakes and then they're like vultures 😄

Gothamcity · 24/05/2025 12:36

I'm a whore for sandwiches. And I try to limit them because I'd have them everyday if I could. Think it's a nostalgia thing as thry remind me of packed lunches as a child, as that's what EVERYONE had back in the 80s. Both my kids and husband hate sandwiches. The kids will sometimes reluctantly have a bagel, but mostly have pasta, or baked/pastry items for their packed lunch. It's really annoying! I just can't fathom not enjoying a big cheese and pickle sandwich

Sapana · 24/05/2025 12:36

Weirdly snippy language OP. They are not "jabbing away with their fork" any more than you are sucking on your little sandwich.

JanetareyouokareyouokJanet · 24/05/2025 12:38

i love a sandwich when someone else makes it for me. No idea why

Coffeeishot · 24/05/2025 12:39

Yes I love a sandwich I do sometimes get bored with bread though and have a salad or some noddles but I'm not a carb hater!

ZepherinDrouhin · 24/05/2025 12:39

Give me a roast chicken salad with chilli mayo in a sandwich or a wrap any day.

ClairDeLaLune · 24/05/2025 12:40

Ddakji · 24/05/2025 10:31

It’s odd because I agree that in my office eating a sandwich seems unusual. But yet Pret and M&S are chockablock at lunchtime and while they also sell salads etc they still sell a lot of sandwiches.

So where are the sandwich eaters at lunchtime?? Do they go and hide somewhere with their shameful lunch? I’m out and proud at work but I’m beyond the age of being lunch-shamed.

(I don’t think it’s about avoid carbs, as most non-sandwich eaters are eating pasta or noodles.)

Ooh I love a Pret egg sarnie 😋

SwedishEdith · 24/05/2025 12:43

I never take leftovers to work as just more stuff to carry. Still use meal deals but sushi rather than sandwiches. I very much doubt they're healthier at all but seemed to be the only way to get some fish.

StrawberrySquash · 24/05/2025 12:43

Most sandwiches are pretty meh. Especially if you have to make them in advance and have them survive transportation. I'd much rather have a substantial salad or leftovers. At home I might have bread and cheese and salad, but it'll be on a plate not as a sandwich. Or a toastie - can't do that in the office.

Nomoreidea · 24/05/2025 12:44

Agree OP, and they always discuss what's in the container at great length, thus revealing the culinary delights they whipped up last night. While I have a ham sandwich 😃

JustToBeMe · 24/05/2025 12:46

kalokagathos · 24/05/2025 10:38

Bread makes me fat so I became a jabber:)

I get this.

I love a sandwich, But Ive found bread makes me bloated. Hmm
So I probably only eat one every now and then 😔

Purrpurrpurr · 24/05/2025 12:49

Sourdough bread, butter, salami, cheddar cheese, and a layer of watercress as this can survive being squished without making the sandwich soggy

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 24/05/2025 12:50

Wraps are much duller than ordinary bread, to me anyway. What's the appeal?

Gilead · 24/05/2025 12:51

Ham and pease pudding stottie!

TwinklyFawn · 24/05/2025 12:52

I take things like soup or salad. I only like sandwiches if i eat them straight after making them.

ANiceBigCupOfTea · 24/05/2025 12:53

Sandwiches just make me want more sandwiches, but rice/baked potato and a protein fills me better for less calories and is also less moreish

Cucy · 24/05/2025 12:58

I love a good sandwich but rarely take them to work.
1.they don’t fill me up and 2.they tend to go soggy.

I used to get them as part of a meal deal when having lunch on the go but then I found out that Morrisons meal deal includes the pasta salad bar and it changed my life.

Poonu · 24/05/2025 13:05

Most bread is nutritionally devoid. I prefer my food to be more wholesome.
People used to use lard many many years ago, as we educate ourselves our preferences evolve.

Swearwolf · 24/05/2025 13:07

This thread is genuinely eye opening for me - I had no idea so many people liked sandwiches! For me, and I guess I just assumed most people felt the same, they’re eaten purely for convenience in a packed lunch. Like, not awful, but would never be first choice. The act of eating them just seems to take so much effort, and I’d never look forward to a sandwich, they’re just something easy to transport. I have never taken one to the office in 20 years of work, picnics on days out with the kids only. I’m honestly surprised by everyone’s replies here!
