To think I've peaked after spotting three celebs in one day??!

On a work trip to London today. I spotted:

Hugo Taylor (MIC OG) this morning on the street near Liverpool Street station

James Acaster (comedian) coming out of Liverpool Street station at the end of the working day, AND

(Most excitingly for me) Marina Hyde with her husband, running for a train at Paddington Station!

I’m not even a massive celeb-spotter usually, but this was a personal record. AIBU to think this is peak and it’s all downhill from here?

Can anyone beat that? What's your best day of unexpected celeb sightings?

Are we only defining celebrities if Nomas had heard of them?

I only said I wouldn’t call them slebs, not that others can’t.

WimbyAce · 15/05/2025 22:22

Think I'm the only one that knows who Hugo Taylor is, but then I have watched MIC from the beginning 😄

worrisomeasset · 15/05/2025 22:22

If you take a walk through Edinburgh during the Festival period, you’ll almost certainly encounter several mid-level celebs. They’re usually shorter than you’d think.

VickiFromAmsterdam · 15/05/2025 22:24

Who?

H often points people out, but I have no clue who they are.

Redpeach · 15/05/2025 22:26

Why is marina hyde so revered?

Anon501178 · 15/05/2025 22:28

Don't live in London but have spotted Boris Johnson in the back of a car (when he was mayor) I also think I saw Vanessa carlton (of the song 'a thousand miles' fame) on the tube once, but can't be sure. She isn't English so maybe it wasn't her, but whoever it was was her double!
Other than that I don't think I've unexpectedly come across anybody.

Ha! We had a conversation in the office today about how much shorter celebrities are than you’d imagine 😄

BobbyBiscuits · 15/05/2025 22:28

That's quite cool. I love celeb spotting by accident. I can't say I know of the first two though. Marina is not really a 'celeb' per se as she's more just a print journalist but I do like her. Was she really skinny? I always think journos have really misleading head shots!
I saw Kate Moss and Bobby Gillespie at a party once. Other than that it's only ever been one at a time!

I saw John Lithgow on Shaftesbury Avenue the other day. I’ve heard of James Acaster but I don’t know what he looks like, like others I’ve never heard of the other two, sorry OP.

I was standing next to him for ages outside the Vaudeville. Didn’t realise because I didn’t look up. Man, he’s tall.

Platformbootsandaboa · 15/05/2025 22:52

I’m rubbish at recognising people but my (adult) dc are excellent and always spotting people. One weekend last year my dd pointed out Dolly Alderton in the same restaurant as us and then Felicity Cloake walked past us. The next day we walked past Liz Carr and within 20 minutes my daughter pointed out Ncuti Gatwa.
i once stood next to Greg Davies in the queue for the loo at Latitude and spent the entire time thinking that he looked familiar and wondering if it was a school dad. And I saw a couple of the cast of Made in Chelsea in Waitrose, but only knew who it was when I asked the cashier why so many people were watching them.

Bonjovispyjamas · 15/05/2025 22:53

I'm another one who doesn't know who they are? But I sat on the next table to Dawn French and Lenny Henry in Planet Hollywood once, obviously it was many years ago.

Used to love James Acaster until he outed himself as a misogynistic piece of shit.

Same here. Started shouting about terfs and Karens and how men can be women just as much as women can be women. Absolute bollocks.

MrsClatterbuck · 15/05/2025 23:21

Where I live there is absolutely no chance of seeing a celeb nada zilch. Years ago on a trip to London I did see Kirk Douglas in Harrods. He was buying chocolates. It was Valentines day.

Oceangreen · 15/05/2025 23:25

I was checking in at a BA check-in desk in the USA for a night flight back to Heathrow and turned to my left and Tom Ford (fashion designer) was checking in next to me, he was tiny.

While living in London I got into a lift that William Hague was already in, just me and him going down in a lift together. He was very smiley and friendly, jovial chap.

Also once saw Simon Cowell and his then girl friend, Terri Seymour, in the food hall at Harrods.

lobeydosser · 16/05/2025 00:15

Marina Hyde isn't a celebrity as such - I would say she's a celebrated columnist. Her stuff is usually witty and well argued. Not sure I'd recognise her in the street though - not without her byline pic handy!

lobeydosser · 16/05/2025 00:19

Years and years ago I saw Thelma Barlow (played Mavis in Corrie and was also in dinner ladies) at a hotel in Andalucia. She was indeed smaller than I expected as well as younger and better looking!

VoltaireMittyDream · 16/05/2025 00:25

A million years ago I was in a car with a friend who nearly ran over a heavily pregnant Kate Moss when she leapt out into the road from behind a parked car.

That’s my top sleb spot ever.

I saw Helena Bonham Carter on a train plaform the day before lockdown was announced. She was looking very windswept and fashionable and dramatic. I was holding one of those ladybird patterned portable potties for toilet training.

Beketaten · 16/05/2025 00:26

I saw Neil Tennant and Janet Street-Porter having dinner together at The Ivy. And Michael Caine there on a separate occasion.

hereismydog · 16/05/2025 00:33

I was on the Tube with three Game of Thrones cast members (Kit Harrington, Alfie Allen and Natalie Dormer), only noticed them because I liked Natalie’s trousers and looked up to see the rest of her outfit!

My sister sees celebrities on her way to work frequently; her favourite so far has been Hugh Grant ushering her across the street from his motorbike Grin

hereismydog · 16/05/2025 00:35

Oh, and my own favourite celebrity spot will forever be Paul McCartney himself standing in front of me in the popcorn queue at the cinema!

viques · 16/05/2025 00:45

LeticiaMorales · 15/05/2025 20:39

I don't know who they are either, sorry. Although Marina Hyde sounds familiar. I used to see Peter Capaldi on the tube , and I once saw both him and Diana Rigg in the same carriage. Not together.

I saw Jonny Vegas on a district line train once.

Sat at the next table to the late great Maggie Smith at the Chelsea Physic garden, also saw Nigel Slater there. On a different day. (Broke my own “ignore them they aren’t working” rules and spoke to him because I had just been to see his play Toast and had loved it, especially the foodie treats the audience were given!)

Why would people Google randoms they’ve never heard of just because a stranger on MN saw them from afar?

Curiosity.

Try it - it broadens the mind.

Oh! I did the sauna thing with Rosemary Leach. Wanted to ask for her autograph but being naked neither of us had pens!

I shared a sauna with Frank Bruno. He wasn’t naked, nor was I, but he wore very small red speedos, a gold chain and a huge Rolex.

IHateMozzies · 16/05/2025 00:51

Mylene Klass going to work on Saturday in Leicester Square

HeatwaveToNightshade · 16/05/2025 00:57

Never see celebrities. Am in NI. Anyone who’s doing well doesn’t live here anymore🤣
