No holiday this year as DP is getting a hair transplant

My DP has been umming and ah’ing about this for a couple of years now and is finally taking the plunge.

Due to the cost, we won’t be having a holiday this year (a bit annoying but it’s something he’s set on).

Has anyone got any experience of their partner having done similar? Were you in support of it? Any tips etc which would be good to know…

And you? Are you set on it?

cestlavielife · 14/05/2025 18:16

Do you want a holiday?
Or do you want his hair transplant more than a holiday?

HorseMadL · 14/05/2025 18:16

I want a holiday but I think it’s selfish of me to make a fuss if I’m honest, so I’ve kept my gob shut for once!

Is it abroad? Can you basically combine the two?

Iloveacurry · 14/05/2025 18:17

Why don’t you go away with a friend? Then you’re just paying for yourself.

Clearinguptheclutter · 14/05/2025 18:18

go to Turkey all together?

dh went to Istanbul recently and half the plane coming back had clearly had some kind of job

MatildaTheCat · 14/05/2025 18:19

DS was considering this, much to my surprise as he’s had a receding hairline for a long time and looks great. However I was concerned about how he could feel if one side took and the other side didn’t. After I mentioned this he somewhat went off the idea.

To be fair I have no idea what the failure rate is like.

Fedupmumofadultsons · 14/05/2025 18:19

Is this family money he is using if so that's so selfish to deny others a holiday out of your own vanity

CaptainFuture · 14/05/2025 18:19

Do you live together? Combined finances or is it that if he's paying for this he cannot afford a holiday as well?

HorseMadL · 14/05/2025 18:19

He’s getting it done in the UK so it’s more expensive - in the region of £7,500

It’s essentially fail proof apparently, as it’s hair taken from the back and side of the head which doesn’t fall out.

Not true. An acquaintance has had it done. It failed. He had hair for a short while but ultimately it all fell out. His hair round the back and sides is very long and thick too. But he’s completely bald on top again. Spent an absolute fortune on it.

Maddy70 · 14/05/2025 18:24

My best friend had it done. It really helped his confidence. He looks fantastic now.

Good on him

Maddy70 · 14/05/2025 18:25

You could get it done in Turkey. Holiday for you all at the same time.

TomeTome · 14/05/2025 18:26

I’d miss a holiday for something like this. He really wants it and it’s not like it’s going to happen again

UnsocialMedia · 14/05/2025 18:26

If they take it from the sides and the back does that mean those areas are then more sparse?

WallaceinAnderland · 14/05/2025 18:27

A holiday will last a couple of weeks. His new hair will last a couple of years. Which is better value do you think?

NerdyBird · 14/05/2025 18:28

When do you and any dc get to spend £7500 each on a self esteem boosting thing? I guess for me this sort of thing would need to be from personal spends and not mean others miss out.

£7500 for some hair?!?!?

Has he got a really ugly shaped head or something so he can't just shave his head??

I couldn't be married to someone so vain who valued their looks above family fun!

UndermyShoeJoe · 14/05/2025 18:29

7.5k for hair? I mean teeth I could understand but hair that is likely to just fall out again eventually as he ages more naturally anyway.

Sparklebelle1024 · 14/05/2025 18:30

My boss got one done, initial healing was a bit rough but he looks really good now and he’s got so much more confidence in himself now. He’s glad he did it. You don’t actually realise how much it impacts men really. His wife found the initial healing process difficult because his head did swell a lot and she was worried about him but apparently that’s normal! He’s happy how it’s turned out though!!

This is my feelings on it too

That’s good, roughly how old is he and was it just the front he got done? x

DH works with someone whose had 3.

First was a disaster - cheap job that looked like a Barbie (plugs of hair). Second (v expensive to fix the first).

Third as hair has continued male pattern baldness so started to have a gap between natural hair and the 2nd transplant.

Apparently wishes he’d never started as it’s cost a bloody fortune and he thinks unless he keeps going he’s going to end up eventually with male pattern baldness in reverse.

I’ve not seen it, but DH says first was awful. Second looked good for 3/4 years. Third was fairly recently so looks ok ish but a bit odd around the pattern of hair growth.

Upshot is DH (who briefly flirted with the idea as started losing his hair late twenties/early thirties) is really glad he just decided to bite the bullet and rock a shaved head - and very fine he looks to me, even if I’m biased :-).

As to the holiday I think there are circumstances it’s warranted to spend on one partner that are similar such an eye laser (so good vision).

Hair transplant less so, though I get the distress this causes many men.

Has he really looked into this properly (have you?)? In terms of potential multiple procedures?

Has he looked at alternatives such as hair systems that are often more realistic than transplants and can be worn for weeks and all activities?

From what I understand it’s not a one off fix, can go badly wrong and in the end he may end up with a worse result in years to come.

Fine unless something goes wrong.
