No holiday this year as DP is getting a hair transplant

My DP has been umming and ah’ing about this for a couple of years now and is finally taking the plunge.

Due to the cost, we won’t be having a holiday this year (a bit annoying but it’s something he’s set on).

Has anyone got any experience of their partner having done similar? Were you in support of it? Any tips etc which would be good to know…

That’s good, roughly how old is he and was it just the front he got done? x

He’s in his early 50s I think. Was the front and top of his head the “bald circle”

DH works with someone whose had 3.

First was a disaster - cheap job that looked like a Barbie (plugs of hair). Second (v expensive to fix the first).

Third as hair has continued male pattern baldness so started to have a gap between natural hair and the 2nd transplant.

Apparently wishes he’d never started as it’s cost a bloody fortune and he thinks unless he keeps going he’s going to end up eventually with male pattern baldness in reverse.

I’ve not seen it, but DH says first was awful. Second looked good for 3/4 years. Third was fairly recently so looks ok ish but a bit odd around the pattern of hair growth.

Upshot is DH (who briefly flirted with the idea as started losing his hair late twenties/early thirties) is really glad he just decided to bite the bullet and rock a shaved head - and very fine he looks to me, even if I’m biased :-).

As to the holiday I think there are circumstances it’s warranted to spend on one partner that are similar such an eye laser (so good vision).

Hair transplant less so, though I get the distress this causes many men.

Has he really looked into this properly (have you?)? In terms of potential multiple procedures?

Has he looked at alternatives such as hair systems that are often more realistic than transplants and can be worn for weeks and all activities?

From what I understand it’s not a one off fix, can go badly wrong and in the end he may end up with a worse result in years to come.

There’s a tablet which prevents further baldness apparently, but comes with side effects. It sounds like he didn’t take this.

DH is receding with a shaved head and honestly I'd find the lack of confidence and vanity off-putting if he suddenly wanted a hair transplant.

blankittyblank · 14/05/2025 18:34

Something I don’t understand about hair transplants is if you’re still balding and continue to lose hair does that mean that you’ll have a nice full head of transplanted hair on top, but bald patches underneath where the balding has continued?

BreadInCaptivity · 14/05/2025 18:36

HorseMadL · 14/05/2025 18:20

It’s essentially fail proof apparently, as it’s hair taken from the back and side of the head which doesn’t fall out.

Not sure that’s true. Also see my post above that even if it takes, if the recession continues you end up with a weird gap between the transplant and the natural hair - unless you cough up more money to do it again.

Based my understanding yes.

Pedant5corner · 14/05/2025 18:38

An acquaintance had it done, and apparently it hurts.
He looked fine before the transplant, but not being male or bald, it's not for me to judge why he wanted it done.

As a female who is not in the first flush of youth, I can understand that the signs of age do take a bit of getting used to.

Acquaintance was 30ish.

reesespieces123 · 14/05/2025 18:40

He's committed your holiday money without discussion? what a selfish arse.

WallaceinAnderland · 14/05/2025 18:40

If it's fail proof, does it come with a lifetime money back guarantee? I think your DH should read the small print of his contract or he might be in for a shock.

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 14/05/2025 18:41

The recovery from a hair transplant is absolutely brutal. I think there's a good chance he will regret it.

TerrifiedPassenger · 14/05/2025 18:42

HorseMadL · 14/05/2025 18:19

He’s getting it done in the UK so it’s more expensive - in the region of £7,500

Holy fuck!

Sven and a half GRAND on a vanity project?

I take it you will also have exactly the same funds from the family pot to put towards something you're set on? Like a holiday for yourself?

Utterly insane. Unless you have stacks of cash, and that's not going to mean you have to make any compromises, like the annual family holiday? Oh, wait...

MatildaTheCat · 14/05/2025 18:43

‘A tablet’?

Has he properly investigated this with all the risks and benefits clearly outlined? I know nothing about this except male pattern baldness is hormonal so that tablet is likely to mess with his hormones and nothing is failsafe. It sounds as if he’s talking himself into this without properly considering the risks.

Okay - red flag…..

So your DH will be taking this tablet with side effects? What side effects?

Would not many men take this before they needed a transplant if it was a sustainable/realistic solution?

Have you both researched it? Is it on the NHS or private?

Suspect the latter so how much is that on top of the 7.5k per year for the rest of his life?

Tbh I don’t think you are making a 7.5k decision. I think you need to do a lot more research. From memory DH’s workmate has spent many tens of thousands over 10 years.

Loubylie · 14/05/2025 18:44

He could spend 1000 on therapy and 1000 on a personal stylist to advise on a good haircut and makeover.

TeaCalm74 · 14/05/2025 18:45

Well I wouldn't be paying towards the hair transplant, and I'd be going on holiday with a friend or by myself.
But each to their own because if your happy to not have a holiday because he has a HT (are you paying towards it?) Then your choice!

Regarding the money - having done a bit of maths I’ve easily spent £10k on my hair over the last 20 years (cut, highlights, shampoos and conditioners) whilst DH has spent a tiny fraction of that. So if the OP is similar to me it does kinda even out.

Runb2 · 14/05/2025 18:49

My husband (50) has had two. One on the crown and another on the sides. Both worked very well. Initial healing is pretty grim. You can't wear a hat for the first week and need to sleep with a neck pillow. Most people have it done during winter as it's noticeable - head is totally shaved first.

Personally if he wants it done I'd say yes - if you add up what most women spend on hair/botox etc it adds up.

Fertility issues is the main one. It’s called Finasteride.

I think you missed the “many” tens of thousands part of the post…

I don’t know the exact number as DH says he’s embarrassed to say - but it’s apparently nearer to £40k than £10k based on he was told.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 14/05/2025 18:54

Seems wildly expensive for something for one person while the whole family misses out on a holiday

Snapncrackle · 14/05/2025 18:55

I know a few guys who had hair transplants over the years

none were terribly successful and I’m pretty sure they had to redo it again and take medication for life afterwards

so you may be in for another 7k again and again

plus they look awful initially -like a nasty plucked chicken who had a reaction to being waxed

My DH considered it - in the end he shaved it all off and he looks as sexy as fuck and it’s made him look younger

personally if you go bald and your a bloke you need a beard / stubble to offset the baldness otherwise it just looks like a big bald thumb

Holidayscoming · 14/05/2025 18:55

My friend’s husband did. He was very happy with the results. In spain where they live. I think he went to someone highly recommended if I remember well.

beAsensible1 · 14/05/2025 18:57

I know men and women who’ve had them done. Usually in turkey but also here. They looked great.

I know people say don’t go abroad. But different countries excel at different things, especially re plastic surgery
