No holiday this year as DP is getting a hair transplant

My DP has been umming and ah’ing about this for a couple of years now and is finally taking the plunge.

Due to the cost, we won’t be having a holiday this year (a bit annoying but it’s something he’s set on).

Has anyone got any experience of their partner having done similar? Were you in support of it? Any tips etc which would be good to know…

My husband had it done without telling me! It’s crap though and 2 years later pretty much as it was prior

Not true. An acquaintance has had it done. It failed. He had hair for a short while but ultimately it all fell out. His hair round the back and sides is very long and thick too. But he’s completely bald on top again. Spent an absolute fortune on it.

I don’t believe that.

DH is receding with a shaved head and honestly I'd find the lack of confidence and vanity off-putting if he suddenly wanted a hair transplant.

How would you feel if you were losing your hair, do you think it would affect your self esteem and knock your confidence?

You’d be devastated, I’m very sure.

DoughBallss · 15/05/2025 18:50

I’m begging mine to get one before it’s all gone 🤣

Tristan5 · 15/05/2025 18:40

I don’t believe that.

Don’t believe what? That he’s bald? He is. He’s shaved the lot off now after spending the best part of £8k on it. Hair transplants fail frequently. Look at multi millionaire Wayne Rooney. His has failed multiple times

Lyraloo · 15/05/2025 19:02

WokeMarxistPope · 14/05/2025 18:15

And you? Are you set on it?

Why does that matter? It’s not her hair. If it bothers him so much he’s going to put himself through having it done, she should support him, especially as it appears the only reason she doesn’t is because she won’t get a holiday this year!
if this was reversed people would be saying her DH was selfish!

Toootss · 15/05/2025 19:03

Surely women, and some men have Botox or fillers and this is ongoing so must cost a packet in the end.

Lyraloo · 15/05/2025 19:04

HorseMadL · 14/05/2025 18:20

It’s essentially fail proof apparently, as it’s hair taken from the back and side of the head which doesn’t fall out.

He needs to shop around, my nephew had this done in London late last year for just over £2000.

justasking111 · 15/05/2025 19:32

Spoke to my son today who did all the research, the side effects of the drugs put him off completely.

You’ve got this quite wrong, but let’s just leave it there.

Right. Well there’s about 50 other people agreeing with me so I don’t think I’m the one who’s wrong

Yes my DP had one done a couple of years ago.

He had it done in London, so I travelled down with him as he was unable to drive back himself due to having to apply stuff to his scalp regularly after the procedure.

He had to have a neck cushion to sleep on for a few nights after the procedure so his scalp wasn’t lying flat on a pillow. And there were treatments he had to spray on regularly. So there is a bit of aftercare involved initially.

I personally didn’t think he needed it, but he felt he did and so if it made him feel more comfortable then I felt it was only right to support him with it.

Fortunately we don’t share finances, so it didn’t impact me. And he earns well and was easily able to pay for it.

He contemplated going to Turkey at one point, but I reminded him if there were any issues, he gave to fly out back out there to get it sorted. He agreed he’d feel more comfortable with a UK specialist doing it.

He did lots of research into clinics first and the consultants at those clinics. So I’d 100% recommend doing his research first.

I have to say 2 years on and his hairline does look great. And he’s really happy with the result.

very useful post! do you mind me asking the name of the London clinic?

How many of them have had transplants I wonder!?😂👍

Primmyhill · 15/05/2025 20:24

£1300 approx in Istanbul and they put you up for a couple of nights. Even with the flight that’s way cheaper. Like anything there’s good and bad clinics - just do the research.

madmeg1952 · 15/05/2025 20:36

Giant boobs cause significant health problems - back pain, stress on shoulders, excess sweating and associated skin problems, difficulty finding clothing to fit (not to mention the impossibility/expense of getting bras to fit), etc etc. I have giant boobs and since my early teens (I am nearly 74) have caused all these problems.

Similarly loose skin after losing a lot of weight causes problems too.

Not at all the same as something done purely for vanity.

Growlybear83 · 15/05/2025 20:44

I really don’t think I could live with anyone who was so vain that they had to have a hair transplant! Why does it matter if he’s losing his hair? He’s clearly got far more money than sense.

Daffodilsarefading · 15/05/2025 20:50

I have a friend whose husband had a hair transplant. It looks great.
I think posters saying the ops dh should have it done are 2 faced. I bet they spend money on their hair, have it dyed, have Botox, maybe lip fillers, veneers etc etc etc.
I think virtually all men look better with a full head of hair. Most men don’t have striking features to carry off baldness. It’s fine if you have beautiful eyes with thick, long black eyelashes a not too big nose, full lips, great cheekbones and a smooth, unwrinkled face. Don’t think many bald men fit this description though.

I couldn't live with someone with your lack of empathy.

Introvertedbuthappy · 15/05/2025 21:18

I had a tummy tuck and boob job last summer which cost a fair bit more than your husband’s planned op! He was nothing but supportive, as I would be if he ever wanted something for himself. To me that’s how you treat each other if you love each other.

covfefe18 · 15/05/2025 21:34

OP have you heard of scalp micropigmentation? Basically it's hair tattooing so it gives the appearance of a shaved head, it worked amazingly for my DH and he looks brilliant. You can't tell at all that it's not real hair and he got it done in 3 sessions with basically no downtime, just some redness. Some really excellent private clinics that specialise in this in UK and Ireland.

Eldermillennialmum · 15/05/2025 21:36

If that's joint money it's a lot of money for him to spend on himself and I'd suggest you think about what you want next year!!

DH and I share the cost of bills but otherwise have our own money so that wouldn't be a joint expense. I'm getting braces for about £3K and I'm paying for it myself.

Do you say the same thing about women who lose breasts to cancer and have reconstructive surgery or women who wear wigs during chemo? Or is it just because it’s a man it’s vanity?
By your attitude I’m assuming you have never spent money on your hair, nails, anything beauty related?

Chiseltip · 15/05/2025 22:15

Just shave it all off and have a holiday instead. Most men look good with a shaved head.

Overhaul54 · 15/05/2025 22:28

browneyes77 · 15/05/2025 18:17

What makes you think it will only last a couple of years?

My DP is 49 and had one a couple of years ago and it’s still going strong. He’s super happy with it and I’m pleased that he’s happy.

Foregoing one holiday isn’t the end of the world.

I have alopecia areata and can totally understand why hair loss is such a big thing for some men.

Women have cosmetic procedures done all the time and other women don’t bat an eyelid at this. But lo betide a man wants something to improve his confidence and he gets shot down and called vain.

The double standards in this thread are CRAZY.

The "double standards" are because men and womens looks are treated differently. However ideally neither should be having medical procedures because of s normal human condition. Its a bad road to.be going down

There's a medical need for surgeries because of pain or hindrance. Bad teeth, excess skin, boobs that get in the life etc.
Men losing hair is a totally typical, normal male characteristic. Old faces are totally normal and don't affect usage.

No, sorry. That’s absolute bollocks.

Who became the procedure police?

If a man or a woman wants to do something to improve their confidence, it’s their choice.
And unless you’re in their shoes you have absolutely no right to judge.
