No holiday this year as DP is getting a hair transplant

My DP has been umming and ah’ing about this for a couple of years now and is finally taking the plunge.

Due to the cost, we won’t be having a holiday this year (a bit annoying but it’s something he’s set on).

Has anyone got any experience of their partner having done similar? Were you in support of it? Any tips etc which would be good to know…

Fertility issues is the main one. It’s called Finasteride.

My 94 year old df takes finasteride for his prostate, and he has a very good head of hair for his age.

MoosakaWithFries · 14/05/2025 18:59

I'm yet to see a hair transplant that looks like it's not a hair transplant.

If my DP was bald(ing) and then had a full head of hair I think I'd struggle to get used to it.

I'd book a holiday on my own..

Whattheduck · 14/05/2025 19:00

My brother had one a few years ago in the UK it worked really well and he said it was well worth the money ( he was single at the time and he used some of the money from a house sale )
He hasn’t had any issues and still looks good

Cynic17 · 14/05/2025 19:01

I would be torn on this, as I think all individuals have the right to spend their money however they wish. So, if that's how he wants to use his funds, that's up to him.

But. I would struggle to respect someone who put their own vanity, seemingly, above all else. What's wrong with losing his hair? Lots of men do. They look fine, regardless of the fact that how someone looks is the least important thing about them.

And, finally, I consider holidays an essential, and there are lots of costs I'd cut ahead of holidays. So I'd be spending my money on a holiday by myself (or with a friend). That way, both husband and wife get what they want.

MrsSunshine2b · 14/05/2025 19:01

I think the comments are very harsh.

It's one year without a holiday abroad, and you can still do lots of fun things at home especially if the weather holds out.

If it's going to boost his confidence and make him feel good about himself I think it's worth it.

If it was in reverse and a man told a woman she couldn't spend money on hair, make-up or nice clothes people would be up in arms. Over the years, I'm sure I've spent more than £7.5k on things that make me look and feel nice and I'm not even very high maintenance.

I hope it goes well for your DH OP.

MadamePeriwinkle · 14/05/2025 19:02

Would he consider a hair system instead?

They cost between £500 - £1500 and last up to six months.

It's potentially more expensive long term if he keeps it up, but less of a huge outlay in one go, he can see what suits him and no risk of it going wrong and being money down the drain or nasty side effects.

Fertility issues is the main one. It’s called Finasteride.

Quick google on NHS, not just fertility but also sexual function listed as common side effects.

You ok with that OP? Fur coat and no knickers springs to mind.

Serious side effects…not very nice at all. Ironically including depression (which presumably a hair transplant was meant to alleviate).

I think you missed the “many” tens of thousands part of the post…

I don’t know the exact number as DH says he’s embarrassed to say - but it’s apparently nearer to £40k than £10k based on he was told.

Yes but that’s for someone taking the tablets isn’t it

I thought the Op’s DH was just getting the transplant? You’re saying he will have the tablets as well but that’s not clear?

Rewis · 14/05/2025 19:04

Some of these comments are quite mean. I'm assuming he has a job, has saved money and the price to pay is not having a holiday thia year. There will be success stories and failures. He is going to a reputable place and not making his children go without any essentials, it is unfair to call it selfish.

Unbeleevable · 14/05/2025 19:05

I’ve definitely never spent £7.5k on making myself look pretty. I’d take dh’s MH into account - is this just vanity or something really bothering him?

LlynTegid · 14/05/2025 19:05

Ask Coleen Rooney, assuming her legal fees have now been paid.

Really? How much do you think you spend on things like make-up, skincare, beauty treatments, hair products and styling etc.

OurManyEnds · 14/05/2025 19:08

I spent £6k on a tummy tuck, and my husband was so fully and brilliantly supportive; pretty sure we didn’t have a holiday that year, but we’ve had plenty since and now I enjoy them without worrying about how I look.

Its nice to support something that’s ruining your partners confidence; that’s what we do for each other, right?

countingthedays945 · 14/05/2025 19:08

Dear lord! I would laugh then book a holiday! Whatever next!

SanctusInDistress · 14/05/2025 19:08

Would he settle for a good quality wig instead?

UndermyShoeJoe · 14/05/2025 19:09

How much are the pills he will need to take presumably forever? What’s his plan for if it fails and they can or the pills are not quite right and more of his hair recedes and he then has moved hair bold patch thinning hair?

Im all for people feeling good but it’s a big lump sum for a might work and look good. Might fail. Might continue to recede behind.

Because if there was truely a magic pill to stop hair loss genuinely men would be on it the second they thought their hair was thinning or receding rather than requiring the transplants.

Sleepthief · 14/05/2025 19:09

I believe the ‘tablet’ is finasteride, a common hair loss treatment, which lowers the body’s production of DHT (the hormone that causes male pattern baldness) to prevent further loss - it doesn’t help regrowth, though. It can have side effects such as lower libido, but if your DH gets his hormone levels checked beforehand he’ll have a good idea of whether this will be a problem for him or not. Some people the transplant doesn’t work for as well as others, but those whose transplants fail altogether probably aren’t continuing with the finasteride, so the MPB just cracks on.

A previous PP is right though, male pattern baldness can be extremely traumatic for men and is compounded by the fact they are expected to be ok with it and laugh off the ‘bantz’ and the insults.

if your DH has down his research into the clinic and the maintenance, it could honestly be life-changing for him!

sandrapinchedmysandwich · 14/05/2025 19:10

The thing is it's a vanity thing. Would he forfeit a much needed holiday if you wanted a boob job for example?

Sleepthief · 14/05/2025 19:11

The success or otherwise of the transplant is clear within 3-6 months, but the finasteride is what prevents the new, successful hair from succumbing to MPB.

Well that’s a shitty way to treat the person you’re supposed to love more than anyone else on the planet.

Hermiaxx · 14/05/2025 19:11

My DSS has had a hair transplant (went to Canada) and it’s amazing and several years on he remains very happy. DH is very jealous! I think the total cost was around £8k but was a few years ago (not sure but assumed travel was on top).

jmx3 · 14/05/2025 19:12

A influencer’s bf has had one in Turkey recently, he keeps coming up on my fyp posting updates. His TikTok is @ riccimandal.

A friend of my dad’s had a nightmare transplant. The transplanted hair started going grey so he had to dye all of his hair grey! (Not sure why he didn’t dye the transplanted part dark but hey ho).

Pedant5corner · 14/05/2025 19:08

I mean some women just don’t.

There are quite a few of us who don’t do fake nails and lashes, no Botox and not mountains of make up or products. In fact dh gets his hair cut every 4 weeks on the dot I most certainly don’t because it doesn’t need it. He also spends more on aftershave than I do perfume because he seems to need 50
million squirts each time 😅

HorseMadL · 14/05/2025 18:33

There’s a tablet which prevents further baldness apparently, but comes with side effects. It sounds like he didn’t take this.

Finasteride. The side effects can be bloody awful. I was prescribed it for a completely separate issue, took one tablet, within a day felt very unwell mentally, read about what I had been prescribed and immediately stopped.
