Reform winning big

1000 replies

Keirawr · 02/05/2025 06:21

Reform had a good night, winning county councils, probably will win a mayoral seat and won the parliamentary by election also.

You don’t have to be a Reform voter to acknowledge that they are taking votes off Labour. Or that they are being electorally effective.

No doubt the ‘basket of deplorables’ crowd will be along in a min with their usual quips calling reform voters names, having learned absolutely 0 from Brexit. Insult the voters at your peril.

These same people also totally miss the point that winning is winning. Feeling all moral and superior about ‘oh well, what will they actually do’ changes nothing.

Perhaps those who label everyone that wants immigration limiting as ‘racist’ Will think again. But likely not.

i told my dad that if reform got in (in a GE) i would emigrate…..i don’t want to emigrate, i don’t think anywhere else would want me and i am bad at languages 😩

I feel the same way about this.

Well voting for whatever benefits you even at the cost of many others is the cause of inequality.

That's a very simplistic view. The causes of inequality are multifarious. In any event, as humans are all different there can never be equality. I can see it in my own children - very different personalities, one of whom is a successful self-starting go getter and one of whom is not (but has lots of good qualities).

My grandfather who was a proud greek man fought for this country. If it wasn't for Jamaica you wouldn't have your bullets. Let's not forget how India helped us in the war as well. You didn't fight on your own.

Totally agree. During WW2 many countries and races joined as allies to defeat facism from the Nazis, without all pulling together it would not of been achieved.

Your grandfather bravely fought facism, but it wasn't just for the uk. It was for the whole civilised world. WW2 wasn't UK v Germany.

But the young men arriving on boats are fleeing a war, whilst leaving their families behind. No way should these be compared to the brave people thar fought during the WW2.

Andrea Jenkyns wants to put asylum seekers in tents.

Good idea - let's set up refugee tented cities in Clacton, Ashfield, Runcorn, Thurrock and Boston.

Will be interesting to see Reform councillors turn up for meetings, find out that the Diversity Officer was made redundant years ago, that cutting down on "climate" saves about 50p and then try to work out how to pay the ever expanding social care costs without bankrupting the entire council.

It will be interesting to see who is elected as leaders of the councils Reform has won and what their backgrounds are.

Well the results speak for themselves in my county and you don't get much more patriotic for our war history than here. However, you carry on trying to desperately refute a basic fact.

The voting breakdown of the EU referendum indicated that the age group old enough to fight in the Second World War very much voted against Brexit.
Anyway, as the Tories have clearly performed the worst let’s hope that’s the end of the bonkers incarnation of it and we’ll see some moderate pragmatic Tory politicians that we can vote for again rather than rabble rousers.

Helloworlditsmeagain · 02/05/2025 14:10

Clavinova · 02/05/2025 14:04

Neither is it racist to say that when it comes to wider child abuse nearly 90 per cent of those convicted and on the sex offenders register are white men.

However, the verdict in your Full Fact link did not confirm that percentage - you quoted the claim, not the verdict. Your link also says;

The government told us that it doesn’t routinely publish information on the ethnicity of people convicted of wider sexual offences.

It would be disingenuous to say that the majority of sex offences against children are not white males. If you read the last census the majority are white British. Asian only make up 9.3%. I would say it's very close if not more than 90% white male sexual offences against children.

Regardless of pp family members the age range for Reform may well show Labour lost older voters due to cuts.

It's amusing this talk of equal, fairer societies. Tell that to the groomed girls and white working class boys. Somehow they are always found at the bottom of the pile.

That has nothing to do with immigration and everything to do with slashed police forces making excuses for not arresting and prosecuting known gangs of all ethnicities for donkeys years. Read either of the two enquiries already done on grooming gangs- 2015 and 2022. The only reason reform is calling for yet another enquiry is because both of the ones we paid hundreds of millions of pounds to do found out that there is NO evidence that grooming gangs are disproportionately nonwhite, nonchristian, or nonBritish.

Dangermoo · 02/05/2025 14:10

MaybeNotBob · 02/05/2025 14:08

So let me get this right;

People voted for Farage and Brexit because of immigration.

Brexit massively increased immigration.

Now they are voting for Farage again because of immigration.

But we're not allowed to call them thick...

Of course you're allowed to call us thick. As well as the racism label, you don't know any different. We understand, fear not.

savory · 02/05/2025 14:10

Helloworlditsmeagain · 02/05/2025 14:05

Absolutely, they don't care they are rich. After Brexit Jacob Rees-Mogg moved his business over to Dublin. They don't care about us or how it will affect us.

Edited

And it's funny how Farage married a German - then his French mistress, Bridgen married a Slovakian , Trump two eastern europeans, Tice's missus Oakshott has fecked off to Dubai and yet they bang the loudest for Britain and rage against immigration and poisonously weaponise the debate. Shame Farage gave up flying himself - it suited him.

ghostyslovesheets · 02/05/2025 14:11

@Pinepeak2434 illegal immigration shouldn’t as anyone here illegally has no recourse to public funds?

Reform punch down, whipping up hatred against the most vulnerable. If they did get into power, I’d think people would quickly realise that our bills wouldn’t go down or quality of life improve with politicians that won votes on populist, extremism rhetoric. Healthy, happy societies are not governed from a place of fear and hatred.

Couldn't agree more plus a look at the USA shows us all we need to know. Plus Farage is a signed up fan boy of both Trump and Putin 🙄

Tripleblue · 02/05/2025 14:11

BallerinaRadio · 02/05/2025 07:20

The issue is governments not bothering to build more infrastructure, and also 'us' deciding we didn't want more people from Europe to come and work here

Where do you want it built, to house nearly a million net a year if the last few years are anything to go by. Is there a spare greenfield near you? You seem open to it, so write to your MP proposing the sites near you

Most don't have compatible values or respect for personal freedom or equality and are here to benefit themselves. Living in isolated groups, never fully integrating. Zero benefit to the UK the way it's currently handled.

Eskarina1 · 02/05/2025 14:12

I think the name calling about Brexit was unhelpful and uncalled for (and I think that it wasn't as obvious before Brexit what the right decision was, I voted remain but was conflicted).

However, the rise of populist parties absolutely terrifies me. There are 4 states in the US that are actively considering making abortion a capital crime. Some are looking at revoking gay marriage. A British citizen who got her visa wrong and couldn't cross into Canada was thrown into detention for two weeks - only getting out when the press got involved - even though she wanted to and could pay to come home. International aid has been decimated. Ukraine has been told its to blame for being invaded. All in 100 days.

So I reserve the right to be really really angry that people are voting for the same ideas here. The new Lincolnshire mayor talks about DOGE Lincolnshire. They are modelling themselves on Trump. And I am really scared and really angry.

Whether reform get in or not they are influencing policy. Like campaigning against Net Zero. I want my kids to be able to have children if they want them, to have a sustainable planet.

Shakeoffyourchains · 02/05/2025 14:12

MyHeartyCoralSnail · 02/05/2025 11:35

I think people who are comparing the way Ukrainians were viewed and undocumented immigrants are viewed and blaming it on race are missing some important elements:

  1. most of the people coming from Ukraine are women and children -the men largely stayed to fight, this accords with a deeply held understanding in British culture - women and children first
  2. Many undocumented immigrants are young men, where are the women and children? - few and far between - this men first attitude jars with many British people.
  3. As Ukrainians are European they have a shared history due to proximity this means that values and norms are much more closely aligned do integration is more easily achieved.
  1. Ukraine is involved in a conventional and organised war, whereas many of the people fleeing other conflict zones are escaping civil wars or oppressive regimes. That makes it far more difficult to stay behind and "fight".

  2. There are plenty of women and children seeking asylum, but they are not often shown for a variety of reasons. However, they are there, and we see that clearly whenever there’s a tragedy involving a boat crossing, how many images of drowned children do you need?

But, it is true more men make the journey and the reason is because the journey is incredibly dangerous from start to finish. Women and children are especially vulnerable, with a huge target on their backs from the moment they set out. They are not even safe once they reach these shores. People-smuggling gangs will rape or abduct women and children if given the chance. It is far safer for men to make the journey first and, once safely processed, send for their families. What was it, something like 400 unaccompanied children who have gone missing from UK detention centres last year alone?

Honestly, the idea that these men are simply abandoning their loved ones while they “swanning off” to the UK shows just how little understanding the general public has of the realities involved.

  1. Ukraine is about as far from the UK as North Africa. And before the unrest in 2014, Ukraine was on the UN and Amnesty International’s watch list for far-right activism and violence against women and girls. It is also a much more socially conservative and Christian country than the UK. In fact, the only things we really share are being on the same continent and being majority white.

All this information is freely available and well documented, so the fact the narrative you state prevails is simply down to ignorance and the media/politicians pushing a divisive narrative for their own gains.

Here are some stats.

87% of the population is white. White people account for 90% of defendents proceeded against for csa offences.

9% of the population is Asian. Asian people account for 5% of defendents proceeded against for csa offences.

But this is something entirely separate to what the other poster was talking about - she was talking about gyy th pining gangs, gangs who clearly have a racial element in picking victims.

Your statistics are general csa offences which will inc those against family members (which is likely to have different reporting levels in different communities)

Very important to draw that distinction

Rivypike · 02/05/2025 14:12

It’s weird how older reform voters are disgruntled because of a benefit being means tested and yet they’re quite happy to see other benefits and public services cut to the bone as happened over the last 12 years or so.

MalcolmMoo · 02/05/2025 14:13

I always think of this as turkeys voting for Christmas.

If we do become far more right wing etc. likelihood I’ll probably be okay as I’m in a profession, middle class upbringing, relatively wealthy parents to fall back on, private healthcare policy for me and my family etc.

So part of me just thinks oh let them have some power and we can watch how awful this country becomes! If I remember rightly one of the top points on their general election manifesto was scrapping the equality act and encourages mothers to stay at home with children more… how anyone votes for them I do not know! Especially with all that’s going on in America with trump.

Bring it on. Let Lincolnshire be the Petri dish and we can see in real life how Doge Lincolnshire goes. Be quite satisfying to see the wailing and gnashing of teeth as it hits home.

Your Full Fact link also says;

Studies on those involved in grooming children do suggest that a disproportionate number of offenders are categorised as being of Asian ethnicity.

Yeah in 2017, before the 2015 and 2022 enquiries were completed and published proving this “suggestion” was smoke and mirrors.

Dangermoo · 02/05/2025 14:15

Anyway, I've said my piece. I'm a happy bunny right now with a G&T in sunny Lincolnshire. Glad to see others not being afraid to stand up to the bullies. You're adults with a right to vote. How you cast that vote doesn't need to be justified to anybody but yourselves.
