Reform winning big

1000 replies

Keirawr · 02/05/2025 06:21

Reform had a good night, winning county councils, probably will win a mayoral seat and won the parliamentary by election also.

You don’t have to be a Reform voter to acknowledge that they are taking votes off Labour. Or that they are being electorally effective.

No doubt the ‘basket of deplorables’ crowd will be along in a min with their usual quips calling reform voters names, having learned absolutely 0 from Brexit. Insult the voters at your peril.

These same people also totally miss the point that winning is winning. Feeling all moral and superior about ‘oh well, what will they actually do’ changes nothing.

Perhaps those who label everyone that wants immigration limiting as ‘racist’ Will think again. But likely not.

Yes because it is not an equal fair society

Immigrants make up a tiny proportion of people living in the UK.

What this thread has demonstrated to me is that intolerance, clampdown on freedom of speech, threat to democracy and the rise of fascism is coming more from the hard left than it is from the right in the UK.

BurntBroccoli · 02/05/2025 13:33

I seriously think all left leaning parties need to join together especially Green and Labour (though the latter need to reframe themselves as they are leaning too far right just to appease Reform supporters who will never change their views).

I completely agree @1dayatatime

No, this started because someone said they couldn't believe people would vote Reform after seeing what Farage is like. I simply countered with I couldn't believe anyone would vote Labour after seeing what Two Tier Keir is like. I didn't say who I vote for (so you're jumping to conclusions), but FYI have never voted Reform and not sure I ever will.

Well my exchange with you started with your question in relation to a post criticising people voting in their own interests
Isn't that how everyone votes?

Sorry, Etaerio,can’t see link.

OK, I'll try again!

If that doesn't work, just google "Electoral Commission donations" and that should lead you to a relevant page.

Mareleine · 02/05/2025 13:36

I mean the obvious answer is for the left to put together a competent and functional party that actually listens to and represents the population and addresses the actual issues people care about, instead of standing in ivory towers arguing about pronouns while throwing rocks at plebs. I'd vote for a left-leaning party like that. The listening and representing one, not the rock throwing one. I'm already not voting for them.

Nail on head! Thing is, the left don't see it. They control and dictate voting. In my book, that's fascism.

There it is! This might shock you but the majority of child abuse and grooming is from white men.

"Nearly 90% of those convicted of wider child abuse offences and on the sex offenders register are white men."

https://fullfact.org/crime/what-do-we-know-about-ethnicity-people-involved-sexual-offences-against-children/?gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=21293519664&gbraid=0AAAAADRxhmdAJNbH0AcPxVYuYCccG0JIr

Your Full Fact link also says;

Studies on those involved in grooming children do suggest that a disproportionate number of offenders are categorised as being of Asian ethnicity.

Unfortunately, I am in the Runcorn and helsby constitutency. Reform won by 6 votes.

I am absolutely devastated.

The turnout was actually less than last year.

If the wankers who voted for them, think they are going to make brown people disappear, they're mistaken.

Reform will do absolutely fuck all for our borough.

I'm yet to hear one of their policies other than 'labour are rubbish'

I feel like moving.

If the wankers who voted for them, think they are going to make brown people disappear, they're mistaken.

I don't think brown people are the issue at all, it's much more to do with aspects of certain cultures that are perceived to be taking hold in our society and which a lot of people find unacceptable.

'The hard left' such sensationalism, people can detest Reform and what they stand for as they are extreme and they should be highlighted as such. People who don't support an extreme right wing party aren't by default the extreme left!

Immigrants make up a tiny proportion of people living in the UK.

16% is not a tiny proportion, and it has risen by a third since 2011.

Disturbing that people put being anti-immigration above continuing to have free at the point of use healthcare. More than disturbing - frightening.

Just said the same thing to husband. Very sad

I just said it was. Honestly, you need to stop being so defensive.

Viviennemary · 02/05/2025 13:41

People don't like Reform much. But they like the other choices even less. Tories were finished after their long term in government and the covid fiasco and final nail was that idiot Liz Truss. Labour is a waste of time unless you are on benefits or live in champagne socialist territory. But I don't think this will happen in a general election.

RosesAndHellebores · 02/05/2025 13:41

Not much debate as ever.
I imagine people voted Reform because they are still pissed off with the Conservatives and since last July they are now even more pissed off with Labour due to the damage they have wrought across the board, which is not what they promised.

We no longer have a two party system so I venture proportional representation. We cannot, moving forward, have parties in control who may have got a mandate from only about 25% of the voting public.

Goldenbear · 02/05/2025 13:42

Dangermoo · 02/05/2025 13:40

Yet you have no problem being dramatic with referring to the far right.

But Reform are the extreme right, they are right of right, that's factual and correct whereas the Liberal Democrats for example are not the extreme left, they are liberals!

myplace · 02/05/2025 06:32

It will be interesting to see how they do in practice. In many ways they represent working people the way labour no longer does.

I want to see whether they are indeed racist, ableist bigots or whether they are pragmatists. That usually plays out with appalling behaviour, so we’ll see.

A quick read through of quotes of their members will give you the answer. They’re racist bigots who peddle a divisive narrative. People who vote for them aren’t stupid I don’t think they’re disillusioned and the whole sorry state of affairs is thoroughly depressing

Immigrants make up a tiny proportion of people living in the UK.

I know I was alluding to the failure to protect vulnerable girls in society and what contributed to their vulnerability not necessarily what exploited it.
