To think MNHQ should delete all chat about ‘the golden/bonus dose’ for those on WLI?

I use the weight loss forums quite a lot and with the arrival of WLI they are busier than ever. But, it’s worrying the amount of people who are misusing their prescription and discussing with others how to do so. Should MNHQ take action here?

Why do you consider it misusing the prescription? It’s just getting one more week of medicine that is still in date.

ArtTheClownIsNotAMime · 01/05/2025 16:04

Dangerous medical advice is given out all the time on here. Policing it would be a never-ending job. People have to take responsibiility and not blame their decisions on what some random Mumsnetter said.

Julesni77 · 01/05/2025 16:06

Would this not be better on the weight loss forums?

Because the prescription is 4 doses using the pen as directed not 5 doses, 4 as directed and one with a needle you bought online?

whatever you think about taking the extra you cannot deny the misuse element

No, wider audience here and less likely to have bias from those who take the extra

I’m not suggesting people blame their decisions on what some random we said but I do see a lot of people with little understanding of what they are doing take advice from these forums

You are correct that policing it would be a never ending job, however less people would post if it wasn’t allowed to be posted, so less policing needed

If there were 62 tablets in a box of paracetamol that said it had 30 full doses (ie 60 tablets) would you refuse to take the last 2 tablets? The needles are safe, plenty of people use them. I dont us WLI but I cant see what the issue is tbh

why would anyone not taking it care? Am I missing something?

Interesting effort but not realistic

The extra dose is there in case your next prescription is delayed for any reason. It's important for diabetic patients. There is also an extra needle included.

ThirdStorm · 01/05/2025 16:18

Some prescribers have been known to recommend microdosing which is using the pen to extract how much is needed and not necessarily using as 4 doses. Use being directed by the prescriber can't be harmful.

Atarin · 01/05/2025 16:19

If you don’t want to use all of the liquid in the syringe then don’t. I don’t know why you’re so bothered about others doing it?

That’s not what I’m talking about though.

Because its something I have regularly done with no ill effects and this is shaping up to be yet another weight loss injection bashing thread - yes the extra is there for priming but it does add up to an extra dose (slightly under I have found) of an expensive self funded medication which I personally (sample of 1 I know!) have found life altering

If someone took an unrecommended extra dose of anything else why would I care if I was not taking it - not sure what a wider audience is achieving in any positive way here?

You cannot take the ‘extra’ dose from the pen

Can you explain your comment?

I don't see the problem with 'using the last of it' as many people do with any other product. Especially an expensive one!! Maybe cutting the end off a moisturiser tube to get the rest out or even the end of a toothpaste tube.

I don't understand your problem with it? What am I

What are they doing? That is actually so dangerous for MN SHOULD BAN THE DISCUSSION?? (Antony way I don't agree with things being banned unless it legally affects MN)

( I have no skin in the game as I don't use them)

GrouchyBear · 01/05/2025 16:25

Yes, you can. I have done on the odd occasion that I've needed to. It's just extremely difficult to twist the pen after the 4th dose. It's there for emergencies.

AugustMounjaroTeam · 01/05/2025 16:27

Because I'm not cavalier enough with money to effectively make the medication 25% more expensive by throwing away an extra dose - I measure it accurately, by individually packed medical syringe, and I usually find there is more than a full dose).

It is still fully in date. Why wouldn't I?

Sure, paracetamol are not issued in a measured dose pen.

So if it is intended to do this why are so many people discussing extracting it with a needle? From what o have read they are not at all supposed to give more than 4 doses.

You cannot take the ‘extra’ dose from the pen

Diabetics are normally taught to use a syringe in case of pen malfunction no reason why someone can't draw up from the pen safely.

SilenceInside · 01/05/2025 16:34

@GrouchyBear the extra medication is not there for emergencies, and the whole design of the pen is set up to lock after using it for four normal doses. The extra medication is there for priming the needles each time you inject. You might need to do that several times per pen, depending on if you have issues with the needles, hence there being plenty of additional liquid.

To administering the remaining liquid using the pen, you need to twist so hard that you break the internal locking mechanism. That is most definitely not the intended use of the pen. Any spare needles are provided by the pharmacy, not the pen manufacturer, in case you break one or have a problem with one.

There is an awful lot of misinformation on this forum, do you expect MNHQ to police it all
