To think MNHQ should delete all chat about ‘the golden/bonus dose’ for those on WLI?

I use the weight loss forums quite a lot and with the arrival of WLI they are busier than ever. But, it’s worrying the amount of people who are misusing their prescription and discussing with others how to do so. Should MNHQ take action here?

Of all the things discussed to do with WLIs that could be seen as controversial, this is the least concerning one imo.

I take Mounjaro, I use the remaining liquid to do an extra dose, to save money. I've been on the same dose for months now, and injecting it via the pen mechanism versus extracting it and injecting it with a separate syringe gives me the exact same dose of medication. I don't find that particularly problematic nor something that shouldn't be discussed.

there are many nurse prescribers in private weight loss clinics who recommend their patients using the extra dose because it’s so expensive. It’s perfectly safe

also I’m sure there’s financial motivation from pharmaceutical companies to discourage the use of the 5th dose

Edited

I’m going to suggest those patients are shown how to do it safely and given the appropriate equipment rather then buying needles on Amazon etc though. I think there is a huge difference

What effect does it have on you @istrich whenever someone takes a 'golden dose'?

None I'd hope. I mean, I have seen it called the 'magic' dose, but I'm still certain that another person injecting a medication gives you any ill effects.

I'm yet to see a post where it's caused the person injection ill effects (normal side effects excluded).

I’m so tempted to ask how you do it given the pens don’t allow for that but it would be a massive contradiction!

What I don’t understand is all of ‘concern’ on these threads are effectively about things that reduce the cost of WLI rather than preventing people from coming to harm with them, eg. discount codes or not wasting a perfectly good dose of medicine. Why gatekeep for the well off rather than worry about anorexic people?

HollidayRanger · 01/05/2025 16:56

Where would it end? With all the people saying don’t go to A&E etc when people post for advice. Now that could really be dangerois advice

SilenceInside · 01/05/2025 16:56

@istrich the pens don't allow for what?

Nevertrustacop · 01/05/2025 16:58

Are you frightened of medications in general op? Or you just have more money than sense?

spoonbillstretford · 01/05/2025 16:40

I haven't done it with mine, as I don't want to muck about with small doses, but I wouldn't say it was particularly dangerous or ill advised, given it's a smaller dose than the others.

Have been doing it for 8 months. It never has been a smaller dose for me, always a full dose and a bit more.

(Usually I just use the standard dose, which is 0.6ml, but if I am about to step up a dose I do sometimes use the extra - whilst always calculating how much of a dose that is giving me.)

None. Well none yet anyway. There is a bigger picture though and the future of these medications is vastly unknown. The misuse of the pens could lead to tighter prescription regulations and higher cost which will ultimately affect me at some point. So yes I do have an interest but also it’s worrying to see ill informed people messing about injecting themselves
.
as an aside becsue it’s obviously not on mumsnet but the amount not videos of people taking their WLI and they wipe themselves and not the pen is shocking.

I’m not frightened of it. I don’t have a lot of money either. I’m guessing I also have no sense either.

You have to inject yourself with the pen.... using a syringe to do a subcutaneous injection is not a massively different operation.

I have a lot of concern about WLI but I decided to discuss this one today.

i also have concerns about people who don’t eat properly while taking them be it far too little or just fighting side effected becsue they are still eating the same shitty diet just less of it than before - but I didn’t want to discuss every aspect of the at

I have used it for 6 months. What you are suggesting here is exactly my point though. I use the pen and I understand where you would put a needle. Some people do not understand this by the time they get to wanting the extra dose. I probably explained that badly but it was ment to be an example of how some people just don’t understand how things works and should not be messing about with insulin needles.

Oh so the reason you want the discussion banned is because some people might not understand instructions... ?

Well, we'd be banning all sorts wouldn't we?

I am taking at the moment - I am very unsure if it is fully in date to be honest if doing this as whilst the in date on the outside of the box is quite a few months , once you have pierced and used isn’t it meant to be used up within 30 days? and to be fair I can’t be arsed with the faff , so haven’t done it .

CopperWhite · 01/05/2025 17:08

People are already ordering this stuff off the internet so they must be comfortable with the risk associated with that. I can’t see why it makes any difference except to the people who are charging for it.

SilenceInside · 01/05/2025 17:08

@Crikeyalmighty a 5th dose from the pen is fully in date, as it fits easily within the 30 days. Days 1, 8, 15, 22 and 28.

balloonraces · 01/05/2025 17:09

I took the extra dose from twisting the pen with a pair of pliers op

YABU for not having a vote.
YAalsoBU for using jargon which most AIBU readers won't know.
YABU for putting it here for the traffic because of both the above reasons.

I vote YABU.

SilenceInside · 01/05/2025 17:12

@Scottishdreams1991 the two issues mentioned in those articles are

  1. that the amount is not measured and therefore the dosage is unknown.

This is not correct. If you extract with a syringe, you can measure the amount of medication and calculate the dosage. If you break the pen mechanism and use the pen as before, you will be getting a normal 0.6ml dose.

  1. Quoted from the linked article - "There is also an increased chance of damage to the Mounjaro pen by trying to get an extra dose from it. This means that it would no longer be usable, and would mean that another pen would need to be purchased."

This is a bit of an odd objection! You would only use the remaining liquid after you have done 4 doses. You wouldn't be expecting to try to use the pen afterwards. Mainly because it would be empty!

Goodness no don’t be ridiculous.

’people like me’? I’m just asking if it should be a ‘no go’ area. That’s all. I’m not looking to bloody sue anyone.

It doesn’t matter that you’re ‘just asking’, as soon as you make MN responsible for deleting health information, you make them liable.

Their current approach of a disclaimer is better.

Don't be daft
It's expensive stuff .
Why would a you waste a week's worth every month

Because it’s not meant to be used as a dose and isn’t even a full dose anyway?

I can only imagine that you’re the UK product manager for Mounjaro.
