Why are Kneecap not in prison?

1000 replies

BlossomBlanket · 29/04/2025 19:49

But Lucy Connelly is? Kneecap told people to kill their MPs. Why have they not been arrested.

(To be very clear, I do not condone violence of any kind towards anyone, I'm just asking as this seems like a double standard, can someone explain?)

Correct no one has said they're right to say it <as that would be incitement and supporting terrorism > however there's just been lots of 'they shouldn't have said it, but' going on.

thats why there is a discussion not just a poll.

I don’t recall many unequivocal objections to Kneecap’s glorification of terrorism.

There have been plenty. People have written "I unequivocally object to the glorification of the IRA, HAMAS or any form of terrorism". To be met with the response of "I wonder why you feel the need to write that?" They can't win on this thread.

This.

Yes, of course there has. Everything said after the word ‘but’ is what brings nuance to the debate. Did we expect 30-odd pages of the same post saying “They shouldn’t have said it” full stop?
Thats not a discussion.

My ‘but’ was ‘but they shouldn’t be imprisoned for it” which is totally relevant to what the original thread was asking.

Discussing free speech, the consequences of free speech, what can be said through art and music is always going to be a divisive topic and it does require a lot of nuance.
What doesn’t help is people throwing around accusations of being terrorist supporters just because we haven’t said ONLY the words “They should be imprisoned for it”

Gloriia · 07/05/2025 18:55

'Did we expect 30-odd pages of the same post saying “They shouldn’t have said it” full stop?'

No, no I didn't expect that. Nor did I expect 'they're just daft kids' <in their 30s>, 'what's wrong with stripey hats' and 'they were brought up post troubles what do you expect'. Just constant enabling and minimising. Oh and let's not forget the post that David Amess may not have been a lovely man apparently due to his beliefs. Just awful.

Like many ‘conflicts’ there have been shots fired from both sides, no?
There have also been good points made on both sides, in my humble opinion.
And some spectacularly ignorant comments about the conflict in NI (which was my original reason for joining the thread)

I haven’t said any of that stuff. Nor did I particularly have a problem with people trying to bring a little context to the culture that the members of Kneecap have grown up in. I think it’s relevant.

Is this a bit like
’Aid shouldn't be blockaded …. but Hamas’
’bombing hospitals is a war crime …. but Hamas’
‘White phosphorus should never be used on civilians … but Hamas’
’Yes thousands of children have been maimed and slaughtered … but Hamas’
’Genocide is now the publicly stated intention but OOH LOOK AT THOSE NAUGHTY RAPPERS FROM IRELAND LOOK EVERYONE! CANCEL THEM AND LOCK THEM UP !!!!! IT’S ABSOLUTELY OUTRAAAAAGEOUS’

The problem with your summary is that a number of posters were not content with discussing their words. They appear to have a view that kneecap are inherently bad people, their name, their stage outfits, their political views as Irish Republicans, the West Belfast culture that they reflect are unacceptable and must be banned. When those points are rebutted they bring it back to 'its not ok to say kill your MP' which no one disagrees with.
I am happy to repeat I do not in any way find a musician in a balaclava intimidating (others may disagree), the name kneecap can have more than one meaning / origin, musicians/artists reflect the culture that they know, you might not understand that culture so you might not be best placed to comment on it.
Still no explanation as to why kneecap (the apparent glorifies of the IRA) depicted the IRA in such a negative light in their film.

Did you expect Irish people to be told they were ‘playing the victim’ or to ‘get over it’’? Did you expect people who don’t want to jail the Kneecap members to be called terrorist supporters? Did you expect no one to say that the British army also caused terror in Belfast?

WhereIsMyJumper · 07/05/2025 19:22

One thing I learned about Kneecap today that I didn’t know before (after reading an article someone linked) is that Kemi Badenoch tried to block them from received some arts grant that they were awarded.
They took her to court, the judge overruled her and they got the money. And donated every penny to a couple of Belfast youth organisations.

'There's a genocide'... 'but... kneecap'

Let's all be outraged by something stupid said by a satirical rap band in the heat of the moment on stage 3 years ago.

We can't arrest Netanyahu for killing children... but, my holy god, let's imprison kneecap!

Sure! 😂

The level of hysteria that this has gained in the British media says a lot about where the power lies in this country. Nobody cared back when they actually said it but fast forward to when they have a voice and a big stage and people are listening and they use it to speak out against genocide... and suddenly they're finding footage from years ago.

It's really very interesting.

Yes I thought that actually when I read the article. Seems both youth groups help children from both Unionist and Nationalist areas.

“Jesus. Just popped on to see that Ophelia and Gloria are still on here and still on repeat”
And you keep coming back for another little goady comment 😉

You’re right in one way though- there really is no point to continuing this conversation. It’s Groundhog Day. We’re getting nowhere.

Let’s hope Kneecap mean it when they say they’re sorry.
Lets hope the Palestinians have peace , security and dignity in a Hamas-free, Palestinian run Gaza.
Let’s hope NI does not see a return to the violent sectarianism of the past .

Im saying nothing else on this thread ( unless I am defamed 🙄)

Aaah @Traybake99 you can't start posting the truth. After all, there is at least one poster on here that has dedicated hundreds of posts (with at least one other not far behind) telling us how evil Kneecap are. You.must condemn them, not defend them. This thread has been, dare I say, entertaining at times. 😁
Up Kneecap!! Up the Westies!!

And yet for those of us who also have felt 'moved' to keep on posting @coladhsamh has a good old snigger, so if you're a fangirl of those wee naughty boys inciting hate it's ok to keep on posting but if you challenge the enabling and minimising it's not apparently.

I don't think they'll say up hamas or kill your MP again, no.
