Personalised number plates - cringey?

Inspired by the mum I see most mornings on the school run. Range Rover, personalised plate, leggings tucked into white socks - I’m sure you know the type!

Anyway, personalised number plates - yay or nay?

@Lonelycrabbut you could say that about anything? Are people who wear nice clothes or get their hair done or their nails done or go to the gym self absorbed?

Or is this more of a very basic and boring ‘slagging off people I perceive as richer than me’ thing?

ItsSummerSoon · 29/04/2025 21:04

Lonelycrab · 29/04/2025 20:54

Because most people just get a car that they like and drive around with a random collection of letters and numbers on their number plate.

People who care about what numbers and letters are on their number plate are obviously very interested in themselves; they’ve paid money and spent time to tell people they’re different and unique…

With their number plate

Cringe

No.

You've got it all wrong. It's just people enjoying buying something they want like anything else. It matches their car. Some people buy a car to get them from A to B. Some people buy a car because they are also interested in cars and want a nice one. My campervan in my opinion is lovely and I choose to spend money on it because it is my hobby. I love the PNP.

No it’s not a slagging off of people “richer than me” one bit, most properly rich people don’t have PN.. It’s the thought that one thinks a PN is actually going to impress anyone. Good clothes or taking the effort to look good yourself is a positive thing, and that definitely has value.

Going to the effort to broadcast anything like that on the front of your car (no matter how flash) is cringey; it’s shallow.

Lonelycrab · 29/04/2025 21:17

And it marks those people out as being shallow. So feel great about your PN. But accept that a lot of people are going cringe that’s all.

surely the shallow person is the one doing the judging, not the other way round

I’m not interested on if I’m judged or not.

Which is why I don’t have a PN

NeilDiamondsBlowDry · 29/04/2025 21:22

’richer than me’ 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
yes well you got that right , that’s the whole idea of them isnt t it ? to create the illusion of having vast wealth perhaps ? it’s not the case they are cheaper than for example a fridge freezer, ABSOUTLEY nobody thinks ‘oh my god there is is a multi millionaire In that Honda CRV as the reg says so.

icelolly12 · 29/04/2025 21:23

I saw one today that was M16 SPY that was cool and made me smile.

GymBergerac · 29/04/2025 21:23

I've had a £200 plate on my car for the last 11 years, it was a gift from DH and has my nickname on it. Barely give it a thought these days, but it gives me a smile sometimes when I see it. Definitely not meant to be a status symbol on a ratty old 15 year old Punto with questionable suspension 🤣
I genuinely can't get too worked up about things other people do if they have no adverse effect on anyone else. Oh, and I put my socks over my leggings and over my jeans, it makes it easier to get wellies on!

Lonelycrab · 29/04/2025 21:23

Depends if it’s CRV 111 😂

Why's it bad to want to be unique or stand out a bit?

MyNameIsX · 29/04/2025 21:26

thegoodlifeha · 29/04/2025 20:56

How are they useful for thieves?

You want attention? Well, you’ve got it.

People know where you are, when you away from home.

They are conspicuous.

Lonelycrab · 29/04/2025 21:26

My normal number plate is unique

NeilDiamondsBlowDry · 29/04/2025 21:29

@icelolly12

nothing really wrong - but it’s be nice to stand out or be unique for a good reason that took some effort - not that you managed to do a Search on dvla for a reg plate

People spend a lot of time in their car, it makes sense to make it personalised to the individual if they choose to do so. It's not something I have strong thoughts about either way.

MyNameIsX · 29/04/2025 19:08

They are utter w&nk, and the people who have them are, ergo, utter w&nkers.
Especially those who put them on a 10k motor, or those who have a 100k set of wheels, parked outside a house barely worth more….

You know who you are.

Edit: All of you on MN who have them, are excluded from the above description - you are all lovely and possess taste etc.

Sorry I don’t really see how having a personal reg makes the blindest bit of difference to someone casing your house out or planning to steal your car.

Lonelycrab · 29/04/2025 20:25

I saw one the other day

It said.. MONNEY 1

On a 15 year old Audi A4😂

Well they obviously didn’t have much money. I mean, would you be seen driving around in that?

Crap Car near us has PC12OOK

P CROOK. and you know what, he actually is ! Talk about advertising it 🤣🤣

True I’m going to make some cafe curtains for mine in a ditsy print

ItsSummerSoon · 29/04/2025 21:44

I wonder how how many people saying cringe are walking around with cringe clothes, cringe hair & cringe footwear.

SlowAndFurious · 29/04/2025 21:47

For me they are in the list of things I wouldn’t bother spending money on. Some of the business ones are amusing.
Most of the people I know with them are instawankers although I do have a good friend with an obscure one who isn’t in the slightest, her socks are firmly hidden!

MasterBeth · 29/04/2025 21:49

I couldn't afford a personalised number plate so I changed my name to RB27THN.

Difference is we all have to have clothes, footwear and some sort of haircut.

The topic of this thread has come up before, and like that one, there are replies from people who have personalised plates that you would never think were personalised. They picked numbers and letters that have meaning to them.
Initials, and something like a wedding anniversary date. You would have no idea if you saw it.
