Personalised number plates - cringey?

Inspired by the mum I see most mornings on the school run. Range Rover, personalised plate, leggings tucked into white socks - I’m sure you know the type!

Anyway, personalised number plates - yay or nay?

Love personalised number plates but only if it's obviously spelling a name. I don't see the point of ones that mean something to someone but aren't obvious - what's the point?

It’s your car, some people take pride in their vehicle (first one they bought themselves, dream car, saved a lot etc) and so the plate is a little yep that’s mine. It’s not a flashy statement, it’s something you do for yourself.

I guess for me if someone has a plate that spells out their name, they want me to read it and think about the person behind the wheel - Oh that’s Alan right there, or Amy. You sort of want the attention - that’s the only reason I’d say that’s cringe.

Mumsnet.com hates them. "More money than sense" etc.
I love mine, I've had it for 25 years and the initial cost plus the cost of transferring it to each new car has still cost significantly less than a single Mulberry Bayswater handbag.

Yes, but if you had bought a single Mulberry Bayswater handbag you would have a handbag whereas all you have is a different arrangement of letters and numbers on your registration plate. Why is that a better deal?

NeilDiamondsBlowDry · 29/04/2025 20:07

@MyNameIsX
The person that bought it lives In my town and is ‘gutted’ he lost £70k on it has to remove the plate, he was going to use for weddings

im curious about the 247 ……🤣

Edited

247 was Radio 1's wavelength back in the day - the channel you tuned the radio into.

@MasterBeth aah okay makes sense

Thank god for that, at least…..

Tooearlytothink · 29/04/2025 20:12

I love mine and do always find it hilarious how they seem to get right up some people’s noses. I can’t imagine being so concerned about what someone else does with their reg that they even give it a second thought never mind start a thread about it on here.

NeilDiamondsBlowDry · 29/04/2025 20:14

@MyNameIsX beautiful car it has to be said

No, I'm not sure .
What do you mean?

She means youngish, trendy, above average attractive, spends money on fun stuff rather than sensible boring things all the time and is probably considered a cool mum. Someone she's a least a little bit jealous of for one or more of those reasons, but would die rather than admit it, so pretends to think she's 'cringe'.

BCBird · 29/04/2025 20:19

I think they are tacky. I immediately think, more money than sense.

Izthisit · 29/04/2025 20:22

Not for me but i do like seeing the plates on the Pimlico Plumbers' vans.

Lonelycrab · 29/04/2025 20:25

ChompandaGrazia · 29/04/2025 19:52

I have one. I’ve had it for about 20 years. It’s very little bother to move it to a new car.

There are a lot of things I think look bad but I don’t bother making a thread about it. How exactly does a personalised plate bother you?

I saw one the other day

It said.. MONNEY 1

On a 15 year old Audi A4😂

Well they obviously didn’t have much money. I mean, would you be seen driving around in that?

Exactly.

PNP are also fairly useful for car thieves/burglars, I would imagine…

Papyrophile · 29/04/2025 20:29

I like witty ones. Once saw a long wheel base Land Rover wearing X11 GUN. It so obviously belonged to a farmer.

Farmwifefarmlife · 29/04/2025 20:31

I love mine! Was. 21st present from my parents K9 ( we have show dogs) and my initials. It’s short and simple and means a lot. I see some that are definitely tacky and are obviously illegal I cringe at those but I see loads at the dog shows I love!

lalalalalady · 29/04/2025 20:38

Well you’re not going to like me op because I drive a Range Rover, tuck my leggings in to my socks (although the socks are black, I don’t wear white ones) and also have a private plate 😂 in my defence it’s my child’s name that came up super cheap, so I bought it to give child as a gift when old enough but that’s years to come so stuck it on my car for the time being.

TheTecknician · 29/04/2025 20:39

Coach operators are known for having personalised, or at least obscure, number plates on their vehicles. I guess this is to disguise the age of their charabancs.

Lonelycrab · 29/04/2025 20:41

Trade operators running personalised plates is definitely cool.

Your average person… less so.

Clearinguptheclutter · 29/04/2025 20:43

Generally tacky however dh has one which is quite personal and doesn’t look like one so that’s ok IMO

I know some couples with his & hers numberplates! Not for me

ICanTellYouMissMe · 29/04/2025 20:45

Weirdwalk · 29/04/2025 19:25

Tacky, self absorbed and embarrassing

How is it self absorbed?

Mathswizzer · 29/04/2025 20:46

I have one! And I love it. Couldn't give a f**k what you or anyone else feels towards it.
There's plenty I find tacky that I wouldn't do. Judging other people's choices that have zero impact on me being top of my list.

Lonelycrab · 29/04/2025 20:54

ICanTellYouMissMe · 29/04/2025 20:45

How is it self absorbed?

Because most people just get a car that they like and drive around with a random collection of letters and numbers on their number plate.

People who care about what numbers and letters are on their number plate are obviously very interested in themselves; they’ve paid money and spent time to tell people they’re different and unique…

With their number plate

Cringe
