Neighbours go to bed 1am and up at 5am we are knackered , detached house.

We can hear our neighbours running up and down the stairs , they shout in the house, they shout to each other from the house to the end of the garden. You can hear every word.We hear them in the bathroom , word for word.
The worst thing is that they get up early and shout at each other in the front garden and slam their car doors at least ten times because they are unorganized and spend ages packing the car / going back into the house and slamming their side gate.
Am I being unreasonable and a grumpy neighbour ?
I don't want to be woken up at 5 - 6 am every morning if I have been at work all week.
I am tearful and grumpy all the time.
If they come home at midnight I am asleep and I hear word for word what the are saying to each other, it's a conversation that could wait until they get inside.Of course slamming doors and telling each other who needs a wee or a poo or a cup of tea or a shower first.
I know exactly who and when needs a poo , needs to put on deodorant, what activities they are going to , what they are having for dinner etc etc , with the windows and doors shut. Three generations living there and three children.
Our house is detached .

Put dog biscuits through the door.

😆

I wonder if I can train the dog to turn the radio down? Utilising biscuits through the letterbox as the training tool.

TalkToTheHand123 · 19/04/2025 17:05

Buscuit crumbs will make the owners wonder what is going on and may make them pay attention.

I'd put the radio up against the wall one evening and go out shopping.

Yes. Could also introduce some rodents......

I honestly think some people are just loud and can’t help it!
we’ve always had two men as our neighbours and never heard them!
they have recently moved out and one man has moved in, wow he is the noisiest human I’ve ever known.
I can hear his tv, walking, cupboards opening, playing Xbox.. but I’ve just accepted some people are loud. I’d rather not have an issues with my neighbour and they can probs hear noise too

This. I always have to catch myself when I’m being loud and consciously lower my volume. I grew up in a busy loud house and I have dodgy hearing in one ear so I talk a bit loudly sometimes. Honestly if no one had ever told me that I speak loudly sometimes then I probably would have never known. My ex is also a loud talker and my mum regularly pointed out to us when she came over that when we had conversations we would end up speaking pretty loud. She even sat me down to tell me that I need to be extra conscious when I’m in the garden because I’ll annoy my neighbours.

OP if you see this it might be worth talking to them- they might never have been told they’re loud!

thismummydrinksgin · 19/04/2025 20:28

We had similar, it drove us crazy. We ended up explaining what we could hear and asking for them to be quiet and things dramatically improved. Worth a try x

xteac · 19/04/2025 20:38

Had similar in a semi-detached and like you, I got so that I focused on it and it became a problem.

Solutions:
I had the party wall soundproofed, which helped massively.
White noise machine! Best thing ever.

I made friends with them and changed my internal narrative consciously from 'noisy, inconsiderate bastards' to 'oh, little Henry's awake and Steve has gone to see to him...' before going back to sleep. Sounds trite but it worked to an extent!

Ilovecakey · 19/04/2025 21:25

So they only have 4 hours sleep a night? Surely not

Hankunamatata · 19/04/2025 21:30

Foam earplugs and a snoozemask (mine pays white noise)

I'm worlds lightest sleeper and this works for me. Also air-conditioned in bedroom rather than open widow. The new double glazing worked wonders too

mathanxiety · 19/04/2025 22:08

Get yourself a noise machine?

Crumbs???

no self-respecting Dog will leave crumbs.

Lighteningstrikes · 19/04/2025 23:16

They are ignorant bastards.

Can you move?

They may take turns making noise and sleeping.

Jimbobwimbob · 20/04/2025 08:49

Listen to white noise overnight. Download a free app on your phone, very easy and I’ve been doing it for years as I’m a super light sleeper

Soberinthecity · 20/04/2025 18:01

Have you tried talking to them? Seems odd that you live in a detached property and yet can hear absolutely every single word they say.

IWillAlwaysBeinaClubWithYouin1973 · 20/04/2025 18:05

I simply can't understand from the OP's limited descriptions HOW she can hear all this? It doesnt seem to be feasible (and post upon post saying oh yes I was in a semi detached and it was like this isn't helping ...) - why can't you explain more clearly OP? You are telling us that the noise of people running upstairs in a house not attached to yours is audible? I just don't see how its physically possible.

Do you mean through the open windows, or you're telling us you hear this through two brick walls?

asrl78 · 20/04/2025 18:07

No you are not being unreasonable, the thoughtless wanker population in the UK has increased in recent decades and is continuing to increase, at least partially thanks to the you-must-be-tolerant and the aww-bless-the-children/elderly/they-might-be-mentally-ill brigade. I don't know what it is with people slamming their car door five/six/seven times in a minute either. All you can do is have a polite word with them and if that doesn't work (it most likely won't), the local authority might be able to assist, as there is such a thing as unreasonable noise and what you describe would certainly come under that.

Crazyworldmum · 20/04/2025 18:23

How can that house be detached ? Do you have double glazing ?

DrPrunesqualer · 20/04/2025 18:38

Motheroffive999 · 19/04/2025 10:26

Thank you , this is exactly how I am feeling , I will do this.

@Thingyfandingi
tbh this sort of noise wouldn’t be considered so by EH
especially as it’s not continuous and not loud enough.

The actual level of noise could be taken by EH but running up the stairs and intermittent shouting isn’t it.

Its worth talking to the neighbours of course, they may change their ways.

You could keep a record of disturbances. You’ll need evidence so from cameras outside and inside showing the level of disturbance to you.
( this is what we had to do some time ago with a noisy neighbour but he was playing the drums in front of an open window in the early hours of the morning to an audience of our entire terraced street in Tottenham 🤣)

Ive just moved out of a double glazed traditionally built 1930s house. So I too am amazed you can hear so much noise unless you have all the windows open or you are particularly noise sensitive. I’m guessing this is it

Songstress9 · 19/04/2025 09:42

Which law is this please?

The law that doesn’t exist by the sound of things.

Jumpers4goalposts · 20/04/2025 18:53

I just don’t understand how you can hear them running up the stairs in the middle of the night when their house is not attached to yours. Your house must have been made out of cardboard or something?

Mumofthreeteenagers · 20/04/2025 18:55

We had this situ. Detached. But they have 4 cars outside our windows. Always in and out. Always on hands free, so hear every conversation.
They did my head in with their selfish behaviours. Not a thought on their impact. We moved as it made me mentally unwell

oldmoaner · 20/04/2025 19:30

If it was semi detached ok but a detached house?? How large is the space between the two houses? I'd either have to move or do some sound proofing.
Plus have a word and say we can hear every word you say, any chance you can be a bit quieter please.
