Parents come to stay, but then bugger off out

Would this bother you.

See my parents maybe 3 x per year, due to distance. My Dc had a party today, so Dh took her so I could stay home with my parents, who then proceeded to go out for a two hour walk, so i’m sat in the house alone, when I could’ve gone to the party and caught up with friends.
It’s the same if we decide to have a day at home if Dd is tired, they go out and don’t really spend time with us.

Aibu to be a bit put out by it?

Why? What would your thinking be?

Relaxing watching TV in the middle of the day is boring and oppressive. I would have gone out too, if you were showing no signs of getting dressed and wanting to go out.

She clearly says ‘It’s the same if we decide to have a day at home if Dd is tired, they go out and don’t really spend time with us.’

So it’s a repeated occurrence.

Spending a day at home - not going out anywhere at all - is horrible and not what most people would enjoy.

Why? We pay thousands every year to live in our homes, whether it be rent or mortgage, why can’t people enjoy a day at home if they want to?

It must be pretty nice at OP’s if her parents turn up 3 x a year for 2 weeks!

FortyElephants · 18/04/2025 19:09

nomas · 18/04/2025 17:54

Because it’s a series OP’s mum wanted to watch too. It’s no crime to be in your PJs on a rainy bank holiday.

Why are you so rigid?

There are lots of TV series I might want to watch but not in the middle of the day in my pyjamas.

Because most people would get bored and a bit stir crazy.

People like different things. You seriously can’t
imagine other people having had a heavy week at work or whatever and just wanting to relax in their PJs? Or binge on a box set?

No, I think most people have their own way of relaxing, and watching a box set in PJs is one of them.

SpringIsSpringing25 · 18/04/2025 17:43

Why on earth would you do that to your parents?

Why would you treat your child's house like a hotel

NoFrillyStuff · 18/04/2025 19:31

They are stopping for 2 weeks. If I was stopping with family for that long, I’d want to do a few solo things too, I wouldn’t be wanting to spend every minute with them. Perhaps your parents were bored and just wanted to get some fresh air.

I don’t really see the issue with occasionally watching a bit of tv during the day in your pjs. Good Friday is like Boxing Day for many, some people have been working all week and just want to do sod all! I find it weird that some people think it’s weird tbh.

DilemmaDelilah · 18/04/2025 19:32

Slightly different dynamic, because it's my daughter rather than my parents, but she comes to stay for 3 or 4 days every 3 months or so and we hardly see her! However we do discuss what her plans are before she comes to stay to make sure we do spend some time together.

I do think it's important to communicate so that neither you nor your parents have unrealistic expectations of each other. They may be used to going out for a walk, they may have thought you wanted some time to yourself, they may not have realised you were staying home specifically to be with them. They might just have wanted some fresh air!

Yes some do, OP clearly does but her parents don't seem to. That's not rude, it's pretty normal.

I only think it's weird because OP has guests - if she was home alone, she could sit around naked drinking champagne if she fancied.

Except OP’s mum was looking forward to the box set too.

She could have just said she prefers a walk.

A day at home in one's own home can be really relaxing. A day doing nothing in someone else's house is much less so.

When I'm staying with friends and family I definitely need to get out for a while. I enjoy being there, but I don't feel 'at home' because it isn't my home.

MrsSkylerWhite · 18/04/2025 19:39

I’d just have gone with them. Not an issue.

I don't consider parents staying with their children or children staying with their parents as treating it like a hotel. I treat it as family staying.

justasking111 · 18/04/2025 19:51

Our son comes home every couple of months with his partner. More in the summer we hardly see them. They go camping with old school friends of his. We do have a couple of meals out if possible. It's nice that they treat it like home.

A friend of mine her relatives come from New Zealand. They use her home as a base but zip around the country visiting other relatives and old friends.

I couldn't have guests two weeks straight.

dayslikethese1 · 18/04/2025 20:25

2 weeks is too long.

Exactly… it’s so weird on here sometimes. Picturing them like Hyacinth bucket in their finery all day terribly bothered about appearing slovenly 😆

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 18/04/2025 20:50

Lack of communication. Good on them they don't want to be underfoot all the time. Count your blessings!

ThePoshUns · 18/04/2025 21:05

If I was staying at someone’s house and they were slobbing about in their pajamas when everyone else was up, showered and dressed I’d head out too and leave them to it. Did you have any plans for the day? If not YABU.

londongirl12 · 18/04/2025 21:09

Maybe they didn’t want to sit indoors watching tv all day. Start off the day with what the plans are so everyone knows what’s happening. Maybe they wanted some time on their own. 2 weeks at someone’s house is a long time.

ConnieSlow · 18/04/2025 21:18

it was glorious weather today, a day to be out walking. Not sitting in PJ’s watching tv that you could do anytime! I would have left too.
