To take recreational drugs in your 50s

Just that really. Bunch of married fathers going out and taking recreational drugs (concealed up one of them’s rectum) - one hid it from his wife, one has a wife that does it too, the other I don’t know.

What do you think?

AIBU to feel a bit eurgh about it and a bit like they never grew up?

YABU - it’s fine. Each to their own

YANBU - it is a bit yuk.

MDMA has been used for all types of therapy, especially couples therapy.
It strips away the ego and helps people communicate honestly and openly, so if used constructively I don't see the issue?

That's therapeutic rather than recreational use which is what the thread is about.

Drugs at any age are pathetic. Take a risk with your own health, fine. But all the way along the supply chain people will have suffered and been exploited for the drugs that you take, just all to line the pockets of gang bosses and someone to have a good night. Every single person who takes drugs is part of that.

Who on earth puts drugs up their bum to get into a gig?? 🤣 I don't believe that tbh.

In terms of taking drugs I do and so do most of my friends (late 40s/early 50s). I haven't got a problem with it, although I am much more aware of and uncomfortable about the drugs trade/county lines etc so I generally stick to homegrown mushrooms now. Occasional MDMA. Haven't done coke in decades.

Not fussed if people think it's immature or whatever. Each to their own!

I found it hard to believe too!! I think because it could damage careers if caught they were being super cautious.

Do you have kids? How do you manage the comedown?

I think part of it for me is that I grew up with an alcoholic father who smoked weed. You could never predict his behaviour and he was scary and physically abusive at times. I find the lack of authenticity of people on drugs hard to be around.

A few of DH’s friends have got into coke in their late 40s/50s. It’s grim. We recently had a party and they came and behaved terribly and were just so out of sync with everyone else.

Also (bit shallow) I can’t help but think it’s a bit undignified at 50. You can get away with idiocy better at 18.

Plus you’d hope a 50yo would have some understanding of the horrible criminal world that underlies the whole thing.

gamerchick · 11/04/2025 20:05

Risky. Heart attacks happen.

Good point. And one in particular is very socially conscious and it surprises me the hypocrisy.

you'd be surprised the amount of men/women with high flying jobs do recreational drugs. They hold down very important jobs and snort at weekends. Iv saw it with my own eyes

Yes. That’s it. It’s all fake and incongruent.

Having experienced so many men obviously on coke during early nights out, I prefer the thought of a group of men on MDMA any day of the week! Because I know their behaviour will be significantly more pleasing for everyone else and probably much more chilled and less aggressive than all the drinkers acting like idiots, fighting and just being gross.

Because they're older it does feel a bit cringe. The secrecy and hiding up their ass like gangsters feels cringe.

I have some health issues but if I didn't, I could see myself wanting to have another experience with something like microdosing mushrooms or at a stretch ecstacy again.

The problem is not knowing where it's from, how it was procured, what's in it, and problems if there's a bad reaction.

Why do people accept and perpetuate drinking culture so much. The biggest problem I ever saw.
Every night in my youth with other people taking certain substances was nothing but peace, love and harmony quite frankly 😁. Come downs were sometimes horrible though. I feel so glad I had those experiences.

tarheelbaby · 11/04/2025 20:07

Terrible idea for the 50s age group - lots to lose there. Class A can do real damage but difficult to spot/track damage to internal organs (Tom Petty, Prince).

50's is the age when health can fall off a cliff b/c youthful fun catches up with you, so you really want to be maintaining. Also, 50s are the years when you want to be stocking your pension(s) and investments plus spending time with your children (young or teens, maybe early 20s)

Sorry to hear about your dad, that sounds really frightening.

I have two kids and manage 'the comedown' in the same way as a regular booze hangover - Hula Hoops and bit of extra sleep if needed. There's no comedown at all on mushrooms.

JockTamsonsBairns · 11/04/2025 20:11

I don't understand the point of this thread?

Everyone is standing in judgement of drug taking, and maybe rightly so.

But, the people who have openly come on the thread to explain have been blasted.

What's the point?

You can judge folk for taking drugs if you want, nobody is going to stop you?

But, we need to hear from drug users in order to answer your questions?

Is this just a judgy thread? Or do you want experienced opinions?

I'm going to admit. I'm kind of jealous 🤣🙏.

My health isn't good so I just can't risk it. I'd be doing the same though tbh otherwise.

Trumpsgoneloco · 11/04/2025 20:13

It's very acceptable to many - which I don't understand when you see the associated crime but I guess they don't care if not on their doorstep.

LobeliaBaggins · 11/04/2025 19:40

I am a very uncool person. Life seems quite challenging enough without messing up your body. Especially these days. At any age.

Precisely. Let alone all the criminality that comes with drugs at every level. Young kids have been shot in the UK as a result if the drugs trade but who cares? No one!

Mylegishangingoff · 11/04/2025 20:14

When I was in my late teens and thought I was invincible I went through a phase of about a year where I did MDMA and LSD. Obviously it was fun or I wouldn't have done it but I wouldn't now for a whole range of reasons. I don't even drink alcohol anymore. I wouldn't be attracted to someone who was doing it at my age either(late 30s).

Superhansrantowindsor · 11/04/2025 20:15

Anyone taking recreational drugs is part of the county lines problem and so yes, I judge.

findingnibbles · 11/04/2025 20:16

Why are they putting it up there arses?

Where are the parties they’re going to, HMP Wandsworth?

Trumpsgoneloco · 11/04/2025 20:16

As long as they’re not driving or hurting others in any shape or form while high I don’t care what others do.

not heard of county lines? 🤔

AmazingBouncingFerret · 11/04/2025 20:17

Up his arse? To get into a gig? He’s got to be winding you up.

RedToothBrush · 11/04/2025 20:18

I was reading an article on the BBC this week about demand for drugs and how Albanian gangs are forcing Ecuadorians to assist in smuggling with the threat that if they don't they will be murdered. And they murder a lot.

So yeah I do have a problem with people who do this thinking it's just a free recreational drugs without considering how many people have died so they get their high.

Do you mind if I push you on that? Feel free to ignore. Do you think your kids might find that you are inconsistently emotionally unavailable though? I found it so hard to not know if it would be ‘nice/begnign dad’ or ‘dysregulated scary dad’. Do you think you are as tuned into them?

I'm 30s rather than 50s but I am going away for a weekend with friends soon and we are going to take mushrooms. I will only try a very small amount.
