To take recreational drugs in your 50s

Isthisokdoyouthink · 11/04/2025 19:34

Just that really. Bunch of married fathers going out and taking recreational drugs (concealed up one of them’s rectum) - one hid it from his wife, one has a wife that does it too, the other I don’t know.

What do you think?

AIBU to feel a bit eurgh about it and a bit like they never grew up?

YABU - it’s fine. Each to their own

YANBU - it is a bit yuk.

Could it, perhaps, have been a joke to wind you up?

Don’t know why. I am not at all vocal about my thoughts and the person saying isn’t prone to that kind of humour. But could be I guess. The guy that hid it is prone to a bit of odd behaviour.

Sounds like a shit idea.

I work in the cannabis sector, and have found it to be an absolute help for joint pain and insomnia. Cannabis makes me very creative too

There's an underbelly in society that a lot of people don't know exists.
It's in all area's of where we live unfortunately.

Kreisler · 12/04/2025 15:57

It's not the belly that's the problem here though.

It's Ken's illegal bumhole.

How would you feel if they trialled legalisation of MDMA/Ecstasy with appropriate testing capabilities in the UK?
Happy, as long as they took out out of the dealers hand/wallet.
I'm from an area where I regularly see young 14 y.o boys starting the new job, with their new bike/scooter with nice trainers, drug couriers, €20 a day.
If they get caught with the drugs, they owe the dealer, families terrorised and interest rates tripling by the day, until the payment is made, they think nothing of throwing a petrol bomb at the family home.
A young lad 14 hung himself over a 500 euro debt, he was scared to tell his mam.

When you don't live in areas or communities where you witness this, you don't fully appreciate what's happening.

I struggle to think of any legitimate reasons not to trial select projects of legalisation. Sadly there will always be an illegal market I imagine with the harder stuff.

Some people respond in really positive ways to it. I did well for a while on prescription oil with THC in it.
Not quite the same, but the drowsy effect is too much for me. I see others who have completely different responses and enjoy it, value it and their bodies respond well. I don't begrudge that of those people having my own significant pain problems.

One neighbour a few doors down started growing weed and smoking it regularly . He did have mental health challenges and had a severe mental health episode in the midst of his growing /smoking era.

The neighbour was also an alcoholic which utterly destroyed him before anything else did though.

A bit up his own arse really....

It reminds me of the Inbetweeners movie when the ' bad guy' snorts a line with Jay's shit covered £20 note. 🤮

Kreisler · 12/04/2025 17:02

Please will you all stop making jokes about rectums, otherwise we'll never get to the bottom of this.

MissMarplesNiece · 12/04/2025 18:51

Sounds like the "hidden in his bum" was a group of people pretending and boasting that they are "out there on the edge" and wanting to look big for doing something illegal, rather than hiding them out of necessity. I go to loads of gigs in all sorts of venues. The searches, if there are any, are cursory rather than thorough and seem aimed more at finding alcohol so you don't dodge the high prices charged at the bar of most gigs. There would be no difficulty at all putting a small amount of drugs in a wallet, a pocket or even a box of cigarettes. I carry a couple of tablets of an emergency medication in my purse which has never been opened and inspected.

To those on here arguing that drugs like MDMA are "harmless", I'd ask harmless to who? Like heroin and cocaine it is also distributed by violent drug gangs, and young people are still sucked into distributing it on the street.

I think there are those that say that if it was all legal then it wouldn't be fueling gangs.

Fhhl · 12/04/2025 23:21

To me though. I have family members who have died due to alcoholism. I also have extended family who are unwell due to bad lifestyle issues. I'd seriously look negatively on class A drug users

Pigling · 12/04/2025 23:23

I'm OK with drugs, if you really must, but drugs that have been up my mate's bumhole???? Eurhghh, no thanks

Wishyouwerehere50 · 13/04/2025 11:34

I didn't see anyone say drugs are harmless.

They certainly are not. I'd never call any drug harmless even if perfectly composed because you cannot predict the effect on each individual and we don't fully appreciate exactly how that drug was processed and what happened along the way.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 13/04/2025 11:42

I know that some drugs eg cocaine can cause strokes in people of that age.

Kitkatcatflap · 13/04/2025 11:50

Recreational drug taking in your 50's (over 40s) is embarrassing. Everyone knows you switch to prescription.

And 'concealed up his bum' for safety, as if. He did that for extra kicks. Pockets wallets, back of the phone case would have been safe ...... I bet he is on many a A&E rectal x-ray top 10.

I thoroughly enjoy listening to Professor Nutt.

Who might speak more sense here? This guy, or the pinheads in Government making policy who sacked him.

What about the other harms to a person outside of death/accidents though. There is a known link with mental health issues and very clearly drugs like mdma do affect the central nervous system, especially if used repeatedly. Whereas in contrast skiing/horse-riding etc I would assume have many physical and mental health benefits.

Not said with judgement, I took class a’s regularly in teens (90s raves) and again in 30s (festivals). Friend’s mum used to give us amphetamines, age no more than 16. Only recently have I reflected how messed up that was. Personally I haven’t touched any since having children, but I don’t think I’d be wildly judgemental about it in others if the kids were not around.

I also agree re booze being no better. Again, said without judgement of individuals, I drank heavily in a middle class mum wine at home way 🙄, for many years. It is presented to us as acceptable but it’s really no better. Literal poison to our bodies, and dangerous for the vulnerable.

I think it is a societal problem but I think op is perhaps a bit unreasonable to judge the individuals so harshly.

This is up there with a man in his 40’s that I know of so desperate for cannabis that he smoked bath room mold at his parents house!

doodahdayy · 11/04/2025 19:35

yanbu. It’s a heart attack waiting to happen.

My first thought as well. Any fat, unhealthy 50-something who takes cocaine is dicing with death.

That said, most 50-somethings already use a very dangerous and addictive drug. It’s called alcohol. I’d rather live in a country where alcohol was illegal but MDMA and ecstasy were legal. At least they make you happy. Alcohol is a disgusting drug that makes people violent, abusive and depressed. For my money, it’s the single most overrated thing in the world.

Oh yes I agree. It’s ruined my fils health. Started with cancer in his 50s, now with a stroke and t2 diabetes in his 60s.

Barmy.

Browharhar · 02/03/2026 00:20

Bloody hell. Maybe in your twenties when you have joy to spare, but I can't imagine risking any of my precious serotonin at this age. And the comedown must be horrendous! In your twenties you could go to work on no sleep and still meet mates for a drink after. At this age, I imagine it would be a full week of feeling like death warmed up, and childcare and responsibilities on top? No thank you! 🙃
