To take recreational drugs in your 50s

Isthisokdoyouthink · 11/04/2025 19:34

Just that really. Bunch of married fathers going out and taking recreational drugs (concealed up one of them’s rectum) - one hid it from his wife, one has a wife that does it too, the other I don’t know.

What do you think?

AIBU to feel a bit eurgh about it and a bit like they never grew up?

YABU - it’s fine. Each to their own

YANBU - it is a bit yuk.

Anyway all of this is to say- I am well aware of the ethical issues with taking drugs, and I take them anyway fully aware of those. Life is full of making decisions that aren’t entirely ethical, people do it every day. That was my only point.

Just own it then rather than trying to justify the fact kids are stabbed, deliberately disembowelled or killed because elsewhere there are child slaves making chocolate. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I am owning it? I’ve clearly said I take drugs knowing full well the ethical implications.

I am just also pointing out that other things are unethical too.

I am a very uncool person. Life seems quite challenging enough without messing up your body. Especially these days. At any age.

Life seems quite challenging enough without messing up your body.

Same - that’s also been my approach. Happy if that makes me uncool.

I read a teen fiction book called Junk when I was in high school about drugs and it was very impactful - that one book helped put me off massively because I seen how people can go from recreational to addict. So kudos to that author.

Always thought it was best to steer clear of them altogeher and generally don’t have/want drug users in my social circle. I can just about tolerate weed/cannabis (not sure of the difference or the correct term) users but even then I don’t want it smoked around me. The smell is rank and as someone who doesn’t even drink I don’t want to get high.

Dated one guy in my 20s who was on coke and he and all his coke head friends were awful. They were just terrible people but I feel the coke made it worse.

I am not ignorant to the ethical issues with drugs, but honestly unless everyone on this thread doesn’t eat chocolate, use an iPhone, shop on ASOS, etc etc etc… no judgement to any of it but my point is there is no ethical consumption under capitalism, and we all make decisions where we turn a blind eye to the reality.

You can't compare taking illegal drugs to buying a dress on ASOS!

Local children too, every day there are drug wars going on, teenagers trafficking other teens for county lines.

ProfessionalWhimsicalSkidaddler · 11/04/2025 20:47

It’s not for me and I’ve never done it. I’d assume someone in their 50s would have too much to lose to be shoving it up their arse. I’m in my 40s. DH and his mates love it. I do think it’s a bit childish but generally don’t let it affect me as long as the situation is appropriate. If my own DH put it up his bum I’d be fuming and create an endless supply of sexual up the bum jokes. Would I leave? Probably not but it’d be added to the “is it time” list which is an accrual of times our values didn’t align.

to sum up - it is a bit yuk but each to their own.

CorvusPurpureus · 11/04/2025 20:48

Why would it need to be smuggled up anyone's bum to get past gig security? A few pills would fit quite nicely into a ziplock bag in someone's jeans pocket. You don't get body searched attending a concert.

I think your xh is winding you up with tall tales, tbh.

Having said that, it's probably a silly idea at his & his mates' ages, & I would have minimal sympathy if one of the daft buggers had a heart attack.

(& yes ethically also horrid, I guess).

SendBooksAndTea · 11/04/2025 20:48

I'm boring and think anyone who takes such drugs at any age is pretty silly.

@SmugglersHaunt I am pretty gobsmacked. What gangs in the UK and county lines are a result of chocolate & ASOS.

Huh? So it doesn’t matter as long as it’s not people in the UK affected? Surely that’s not what you have to say?

Trumpsgoneloco · 11/04/2025 20:50

& it's often the same recreational drug users reading the news and seeing another dead black boy, assuming he was in a gang, tutting about crime & judging his parents.

Hollyhedge · 11/04/2025 20:51

Gives me the ick. Not so much the drug taking, but more the chain they are then part of and the demand they are driving. Some very dubious and exploitative behaviours are behind it. Decent adults should not be keen to be part of it

Trumpsgoneloco · 11/04/2025 20:52

Huh? How is that your take on what I said? Presumably you don't have an answer to my question, shocker!

herbalteabag · 11/04/2025 20:52

I briefly tried some drugs at 19. There is no way I'd ever do it now, it's far too dangerous for a 50 year old. My view is that they're stupid.

No they are the boring ones if anything. Books and tea are both war better 😌😁

PeloMom · 11/04/2025 19:56

As long as they’re not driving or hurting others in any shape or form while high I don’t care what others do.

Taking drugs unless it is home grown weed is always hurting some body. Exploiting the farmers in South America, subsidising the gangs, county line ? It's never harm free.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 11/04/2025 20:54

Stop twisting my comments.
The UK has strict anti children labour laws unlike the countries that produce chocolate and clothing.
Are you suggesting it is okay to fund county lines?

I think her point was incredibly valid and nothing to 'own'. This feels incredibly controlling I must say.

We are all doing things that have a really dire impact to varying degrees on those less fortunate. So much we probably don't realise. Our positive attitude to drinking, even the way we all talk about it and socially reject the non drinkers ( in my youth that was so). How many deaths have resulted? Plenty.

Maybe we need to look elsewhere at the source of the problem and better ways to address it. I see merit in legalisation of drugs like ecstacy and MDMA personally.

Rosie8880 · 11/04/2025 20:55

Hmm. Depends how often maybe. And what kind of drugs. Alchohol is the worst drug out there (I drink so no judgement) and it’s legal. Any substance - sugar, booze, weed, coke - take it too much and it’s game over. I can’t stand any drugs have to sniff that kind of don’t take you anywhere:- coke/ speed, ket all those kinds of drugs. I’m starting to dislike booze. Mushrooms/ microdosing, a tiny bit of mdma a few times a year - sure why not. They all have been prescribed to open our emotions and hearts. Sticking drugs up one’s derrière - I mean, not the one for me. Generally getting mashed on a regular basis in middle age isn’t the best of looks nor good for our health. A little bit, taking things calmly - why not. Ultimately if he likes taking drugs he’s not in the wrong - it’s his choice. If you don’t like him taking drugs - you’re not wrong. It’s really just about what you both want to do (or not).

ThePoshUns · 11/04/2025 20:55

Pathetic.

Isthisokdoyouthink · 11/04/2025 20:55

TheGrimSmile · 11/04/2025 20:43

I wouldn't do it now at my age although I did when younger. But is it any different to people getting pissed? Or people reaching for a bottle of wine as soon as they get home from work/ get to an airport/ go out for food. Never mind all inclusive holidays where people just sit round drinking all day. Personally I find alcohol just as sad - the fact that it's so normalised and acceptable to drink all the time. But I know that's my issue and as long as it's not harming anyone else eg no kids being neglected then I'm not bothered about it. Each to their own..

Getting blind drunk at that age makes me feel
icky too. I mean, each to their own, and I’d never shame anyone to their face, but inside I am feeling less respect.

I did quite a lot of drugs in my 20s / early 30s. I enjoyed it. It was expensive but I had fun.
I’m probably being ageist but I also think it’s a bit embarrassing when in your 50s. It feels like not being able to let go of your youth.

I know a couple who do recreational drugs (him) and alcohol (her). I went to a gig with her 2 years ago (so both of us were 54) and she smuggled in a massive bottle of gin and tonic (disguised as water).
I couldn’t believe it. She’s not poor, she could buy herself as many G&Ts as she wanted.
That embarrassed me too. But up to her I suppose.
Maybe it’s reliving the festival days.

EveryOtherNameTaken · 11/04/2025 20:57

Embarrassing and clinging on to being 'crazy cool' tbh. Any like many pps have said - heart attack territory.

To be fair, it's not necessarily bullshit. There are often sniffer dogs at events these days.
