To take recreational drugs in your 50s

Just that really. Bunch of married fathers going out and taking recreational drugs (concealed up one of them’s rectum) - one hid it from his wife, one has a wife that does it too, the other I don’t know.

Coke I'd judge. Horrible stuff and people are absolute self obsessed bores when taking it. Something like weed or shrooms? Probably give them a pass. They can be very enlightening.

The lack of awareness around the consequences of their fix, on run down communities, young foot soldiers killing each other, makes me judgemental.

Full disclosure is I smoked a fair amount of dope when younger, and gave it up at the same time I went teetotal, and for the same reason - I didn’t like who I was when on something, and I came to believe that narcosis for fun is selfish and really fake fun. You don’t actually enjoy yourself doing anything; your brain is just artificially fed chemical messages that make you believe you’re having fun.

And that’s my point here: anybody here who says they judge somebody for any drug that isn’t alcohol when they themselves enjoy a tipple is a great big fat hypocrite. There are a number of mildly toxic drugs out there that make you act like a bellend and will fuck you up in the long term. One of the more bellendy, addictive and damaging ones is booze.

Yes, you can have a glass of wine with dinner and then stop. Most middle aged dope amokers I know have a spliff to take the edge off and that’s it. It’s not the substance you take, it’s how much you let it affect your life.

I’m 52 and I do admit I took recreational drugs in my 20s. I’m not embarrassed as I had a great time. I didn’t really drink.
But as soon as my kids came along I never even thought about taking them. Just utter selfish.

Fentanyl was not a street drug in 1995 when Leah Betts died after taking ecstacy (MDMA) on her 18th birthday.

I worked in ICU at the time and we kept drugs for the treatment of ecstacy induced hyper-thermia which could be fatal even with treatment.

It might be safer than some other drugs but it is not risk free.

In terms of taking drugs I do and so do most of my friends (late 40s/early 50s). I haven't got a problem with it, although I am much more aware of and uncomfortable about the drugs trade/county lines etc so I generally stick to homegrown mushrooms now. Occasional MDMA. Haven't done coke in decades.

Have a partner who also indulges. Don’t have kids. The come down is no worse than a bad hangover for me ie maybe a day in bed and a greasy takeaway, a couple of times a year.

MDMA has been used for all types of therapy, especially couples therapy.
It strips away the ego and helps people communicate honestly and openly, so if used constructively I don't see the issue?

they have no idea the havoc they are causing indirectly due to their actions. Gangs, drug cartels, child lines, they all exist because of idiots using drugs causing demand for them. I hope they get what they deserve.
